Instead of a private car and guide, you string together Croatia's coastal buses and Jadrolinija/Croatia Airlines hops, Bosnian and Montenegrin intercity buses, Albanian furgon (minibus) routes and Greek KTEL buses. All the UNESCO towns, fortresses, monasteries and archaeological sites are self-visitable, and the entire loop is comfortably doable on a backpacker budget. Costs are rough 2026 estimates in GBP and assume hostel/guesthouse dorm or budget private rooms, self-catering plus cheap tavernas, and second-class public transport.
