Gap year travel

Plan your own gap year. Skip the gap year company.

A gap year is supposed to be the freest year of your life. So why hand it to a company that designs your route, marks up every booking, and holds your money for months before you've even left home?

Travel Crew lets you run your own gap year programme — build the trip yourself, pay the people who actually deliver it, and travel with a verified crew you've chosen. All the structure and safety, none of the operator margin or operator risk.

Everything a gap year programme does, you can do directly

Dive courses in Koh Tao. A month teaching or volunteering in Southeast Asia. Language study in a new city. Working and living abroad. An overland route across a region you always wanted to see. A gap year company doesn't haveanything you can't arrange yourself — it just packages it, marks it up, and sells it back to you.

On Travel Crew you plan the same experiences with the same local providers — the dive school, the language academy, the volunteer project, the guesthouse — and keep the margin a programme would have taken. Then you publish it as an open departure or a longer-term gap year Mission and find verified people heading the same way.

Your money never goes through us

This matters more on a gap year than almost any other trip.

Gap year travellers often pay large sums months in advance — and that money sits in an operator's account until you travel. When operators fail, students are the ones left out of pocket. GVI, a long-established gap year and eco-tour operator, shut down in 2026 owing UK students thousands of pounds. STA Travel — one of the most trusted names in student travel — collapsed in 2020 owing travellers roughly £100 million. Thomas Cook and Cox & Kings went the same way.

With Travel Crew, that conversation never happens. You never pay us for your trip. You pay local providers directly — your dive school, your language course, your guesthouse, your transport. Your money is never pooled into an operator's account waiting to be ringfenced by an insolvency practitioner.

(The seat fee to join a Travel Crew departure is separate from trip costs — it pays for our platform service, not the trip itself. See our disclaimer.)

Verified people, chosen by you

A gap year programme puts you with whoever else bought the same package. Travel Crew works the other way round: every member is ID-verified, and before anyone travels the group meets on a video call — so you see exactly who you're travelling with before you commit.

If something doesn't feel right, you don't go. No penalty, no awkward explanation. Every departure can be set to mixed, women-only, or men-only by whoever organises it — so solo travellers can go with genuine confidence. That choice is built into the platform, not an afterthought.

More of your money reaches the places you visit

When you pay a gap year operator, a big slice of what you spend never reaches your destination — it covers head-office costs, marketing, and commissions back home. When you pay local providers directly, that money goes to the dive instructor, the language teacher, the family guesthouse, the local project. Responsible travel built into how the platform works, not a marketing line on a brochure.

Real freedom, for a whole year

A programme's itinerary is fixed because its supplier deals are fixed. Your gap year shouldn't be. On Travel Crew the plan is a starting point: love a place, stay longer; find a better course, switch to it; meet people heading somewhere unexpected, go with them. You're a traveller, not a passenger — for the one year you get to be exactly that.

“But a gap year company keeps me safe and organised.”

Organisation isn't something only an operator can provide — it's something Travel Crew is built to give you, without the markup or the risk. You get verified travel companions, a group video call before departure, a flagging system, the freedom to walk away, and a clear record of every member and every trip. That's more accountability than paying a booking agent and hoping the company is still trading when your flight leaves.

Safety on a gap year comes from knowing who you're travelling with and staying in control of your own plans — not from a logo on an invoice. We strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance for every departure, which covers independent travellers exactly as well as programme participants.

Your gap year, your rules, your money — kept where it belongs until you travel.
