The British Virgin Islands (BVI) is a British Overseas Territory in the northeastern Caribbean, made up of around 60 islands, cays, and islets, with Tortola as the largest and most populated. The archipelago is widely regarded as one of the world's premier sailing destinations, thanks to its steady trade winds, calm protected waters, and closely spaced islands that make island-hopping straightforward. Beyond sailing, the BVI draws visitors for its excellent snorkelling and diving — the wreck of the RMS Rhone is a celebrated dive site — as well as pristine beaches like White Bay on Jost Van Dyke and The Baths on Virgin Gorda. The islands have a laid-back atmosphere, with beach bars, watersports, and a strong bareboat charter culture attracting both independent travellers and groups year-round.

Self-Launched BVI Sailing: Tortola to Tortola by Share-Boat & Ferry

A 7-day self-launched version of G Adventures' Tortola-to-Tortola catamaran week, done independently. Instead of a crewed 47ft catamaran with a paid skipper, you'll base yourself on Tortola and hop the BVIs' excellent network of public ferries, shared water taxis and day sails — anchoring (figuratively) in the same places the tour visits: Scrub Island, The Baths at Virgin Gorda, the Caves at Norman Island, Jost Van Dyke's White Bay and the Soggy Dollar, and the floating Willy T bar in the Bight. You can add a 2-day bareboat or skippered share-boat leg if you want the true liveaboard feel. Snorkelling, beach time and sunsets all come free; the costs are carried by guesthouse beds and ferry tickets rather than charter fees.
