Buñol is a small town in the Valencia region of eastern Spain, nestled in the Turia River valley about 38 kilometres west of Valencia city. It is internationally famous for La Tomatina, the world-renowned annual festival held on the last Wednesday of August, where tens of thousands of participants pelt each other with tomatoes in one of the most iconic food fights on the planet. Beyond the festival, the town is surrounded by rugged limestone hills, historic architecture including a medieval castle, and the scenic natural landscapes typical of inland Valencia. Travellers visit almost exclusively for the festival experience, making it one of the world's most distinctive single-event destinations.
