A self-launched version of G Adventures' 13-day 'Through the Heart of the Stans' National Geographic Journeys trip — same Silk Road arc from Bishkek to Tashkent via Issyk-Kul, Karakol, Kaindy Lake, Charyn Canyon, Almaty and Dushanbe, but booked piecemeal. You'll use marshrutkas, shared taxis, local guides hired by the day, a cheap Bishkek–Almaty flight, and a Dushanbe–Tashkent hop, staying in guesthouses and budget hotels instead of group hotels. Homestays replace the operator's family dinners, and community workshops (yurt building, Tajik bread-making) are bookable direct.
