The Ecuadorian Amazon, known locally as the Oriente, covers roughly half of Ecuador's territory and forms part of the world's most biodiverse rainforest ecosystem. The region is home to indigenous communities including the Kichwa, Shuar, and Huaorani peoples, whose cultures and traditions remain deeply tied to the jungle. Travellers come here for wildlife spotting — pink river dolphins, giant otters, caimans, and hundreds of bird species — as well as guided canoe trips, jungle treks, and overnight stays in eco-lodges deep in the forest. Gateway towns like Tena, Puyo, and Lago Agrio provide access to reserves such as Yasuní National Park, one of the most species-rich places on the planet.
