A self-launched version of Mr Biker Saigon's fully guided Ha Giang Loop cycling tour. Instead of a supported group with van backup, mechanics and a guide, you'll hire a decent mountain bike in Hanoi, ride the same legendary passes — Heaven's Gate, Ma Pi Leng, Lung Cu flag tower — and string it together yourself using local buses and a couple of short van transfers. Nights are in the same style of small hotels and ethnic homestays on the loop, at a fraction of the US$1,580 group price. Note this is a genuinely tough ride: expect 60km days with 1,500–1,700m of climbing on steep, sometimes rough karst roads. If you want easier, e-bikes are widely rentable in Ha Giang City.
