Active Japan: North to South — Self-Launched

An 18-day self-launched version of G Adventures' Active Japan trip, skipping Tokyo and heading straight for the wild north and subtropical south. Start in Hokkaido's Shiretoko and Akan national parks for lakes, waterfalls, primeval forest hikes and volcanic hot-spring beaches, then hit Asahikawa and Sapporo for ropeway hikes, ramen and beer. Fly south to Kyoto for the Kurama–Kibune trail and Fushimi Inari, then jump to Okinawa for Yanbaru forest trekking, sea kayaking, sabani boat rides, Taketomi cycling and Iriomote mangrove paddling. You book the same internal budget flights yourself, use public buses and trains, stay in hostels, guesthouses and one ryokan, and join local guided hikes and kayak trips as you go. Costs are approximate backpacker rates in GBP and exclude international flights to/from Japan.
