Lombok, Sumbawa, and Komodo National Park form a spectacular chain of islands stretching east of Bali across the Lesser Sunda Islands of Indonesia. Lombok is known for its pristine beaches, the towering volcanic peak of Mount Rinjani, and a laid-back surf scene centred around Kuta and the Gili Islands. Sumbawa offers rugged, off-the-beaten-path landscapes and world-class surf breaks including the legendary Sumbawa right at Lakey Peak. Komodo National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the habitat of the giant Komodo dragon and is equally celebrated for some of Southeast Asia's best diving and snorkelling, with dramatic underwater walls, manta rays, and crystal-clear waters around Komodo and Rinca islands.

Self-Launched Sailing: Lombok to Komodo Island (4 Days)

A self-launched version of Pesona Indo's 4-day Lombok–Komodo sailing trip. Rather than booking the full package, you book a shared-cabin spot on one of the many budget phinisi boats running the same Lombok–Labuan Bajo route (widely sold as 3-night/4-day open-trip sailings), or mix it with local buses and a Flores-side day trip if you want to go fully DIY. The route is identical: Kenawa Island's white-sand sandbar, whale sharks at Saleh Bay in Sumbawa, Doro Peti's viewpoint, then Padar, Komodo's dragons, Pink Beach, Manta Point and the snorkel spots of Kelor and Manjarite, finishing in Labuan Bajo. Budget shared-cabin sailings including all meals, snorkel gear and guide typically cost £180–£260 per person; you add the Komodo National Park fee (~£36) yourself. Note that independently negotiating a full private boat isn't realistic for a solo traveller — a shared open-trip berth is the cheapest self-launched equivalent and still cuts the package price considerably.
