A self-launched version of the 9-day Niger cultural circuit to the Wodaabe (Bororo) Fulani Gerewol festival, done independently without a packaged group tour. You do the same route — Niamey, Tahoua, the Sahelian festival grounds near Abalak/In-Gall, Agadez, and back — but book your own guesthouse rooms, hire a licensed local driver-guide with a 4x4 directly, and arrange your own festival access permits and Niger visa. IMPORTANT REALITY CHECK: independent travel in Niger is not a standard backpacker trip. Most Western governments advise against all travel to much of the country outside Niamey, and moving between regions practically requires a hired vehicle with a local fixer, security escorts in some areas, and a pre-arranged visa (obtainable via a Niger embassy/consulate or through a licensed local agency's invitation letter). Costs below assume you split a 4x4 and driver-guide with 2–3 other travellers found via traveller forums — traveling solo will roughly double transport. Festival dates for Gerewol shift each year (usually Sept–Oct) and are only confirmed months ahead, so build in flexibility. All figures are rough, based on budget traveller rates converted to GBP.
