The Peloponnese is a large peninsula in southern Greece, separated from the mainland by the Corinth Canal, and home to some of the country's most significant ancient sites — including Olympia, birthplace of the Olympic Games, Mycenae, and the well-preserved theatre of Epidaurus. Central Greece, stretching north of Athens to the slopes of Mount Parnassus, is anchored by Delphi, once considered the centre of the ancient world. Together, these regions draw travellers for archaeology, Byzantine history, dramatic mountain scenery, and hiking, as well as rugged coastline and traditional villages relatively untouched by mass tourism.
