Self-Launched 4-Day Classic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu

A self-launched version of the classic 4-day Inca Trail from Cusco to Machu Picchu. The key difference from a package tour: you must secure your own official Inca Trail permit (via the SERNANP/Ministry of Culture booking system or a licensed local trek agency — permits sell out months ahead and are non-transferable), and you trek with a licensed operator or approved guide, since independent trekking on the Inca Trail is not permitted. You can save significantly by booking a bare-bones licensed trek (guide + permits + basic camping/porters + meals) directly with a Cusco agency, or by choosing a porter-free, self-carried variant, and arranging your own Cusco accommodation and transport. This itinerary follows the same route: Piscacucho (km 82) → Huayllabamba → Pacaymayo → Wiñay Huayna → Inti Punku → Machu Picchu, then train/bus back to Cusco. Costs are realistic backpacker estimates and exclude international flights.
