Self-Launched Uganda Gorilla Trek from Kigali — 3 Days

A DIY version of Kawira Safaris' 3-day Uganda gorilla trek: cross from Kigali into south-west Uganda, base yourself in Kisoro at a budget guesthouse, and trek habituated mountain gorillas in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park (or Bwindi's Nkuringo sector) on a permit you book directly through the Uganda Wildlife Authority. You'll do the Kigali–Kisoro run on local buses and shared taxis instead of a private 4WD, and skip the operator's guide markup — but be aware the gorilla permit itself (US$800 for foreign non-residents, US$700 for the tour's discounted/agency rate, sometimes quoted at US$700) is the single biggest cost and cannot be avoided. If your permit budget is tight, Mgahinga's Nkuringo-area permits can sometimes be secured closer to the date; the Rwanda side (Volcanoes NP) costs US$1,500 and is not a saving.
