Trek the Haute Route in a Week: Self-Launched from Verbier to Zermatt

One of the Alps' most iconic and demanding multi-day treks — from Verbier to Zermatt via the Walker's Haute Route — doesn't need a guided group to be epic. This self-launched version follows the same trail stages, stays in the same mountain huts and guesthouses, and finishes at the foot of the Matterhorn, all at a fraction of the group tour price. You'll book hut nights directly (essential to reserve well in advance in summer), navigate with a good map or app like Komoot or Outdooractive, and use the same public gondolas, cable cars and trains the guided groups use. This is a serious Level 6 trail — technical, high-altitude, and remote in places — best suited to experienced hikers comfortable with 9–12 miles a day and 3,000ft+ of daily elevation gain. Travel insurance covering high-altitude trekking and emergency evacuation is essential. All costs are approximate estimates per person.
