The Stans: Self-Launched Silk Road Adventure (Tashkent to Almaty)

A 26-day independent overland route through four Central Asian republics — Uzbekistan's Silk Road cities (Tashkent, Khiva, Bukhara, Samarkand), Tajikistan's turquoise Seven Lakes in the Fan Mountains, then Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan's canyon-and-lake country (Shymkent, Taraz, Bishkek, Burana, Issyk-Kul, Karakol, Kaindy Lake, Charyn Canyon, Almaty). This is the self-launched version of G Adventures' "The Stans" 18-to-Thirtysomethings trip: same route, same highlights, using local trains, shared taxis, marshrutkas and guesthouses rather than a private vehicle and tour CEO. You book the border crossings and homestays yourself — most are cheap, bookable a day or two ahead, and the locals are used to independent travellers.
