A DIY version of Kawira Safaris' 2-day Akagera safari. Catch a shared/public bus to Kayonza, grab a seat on a park-run game drive or share a 4WD with other travellers, camp at Mihindi Campsite inside the park, and take the Lake Ihema boat trip independently. Park fees are the single biggest cost (£40 for foreign visitors per day), so the savings here come from skipping the private driver-guide and joining shared game drives.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Kigali to Akagera National Park

Kigali – Kayonza – Mihindi Campsite

Set off early — Akagera is only 2.5 hours from Kigali. Take a shared taxi or moto to Nyabugogo bus station and catch a bus to Kayonza (~1,000 RWF / £0.70), then a shared taxi or boda-boda 25km up to the Akagera park entrance at Kigali Camp (~5,000 RWF). Pay your park entry fee at the gate, then join a shared 4WD game drive vehicle if you've pre-booked one with a park driver, or use the park's shared-transfer option to reach the Mihindi campsite. Pitch your tent on the lakefront, then join the early-afternoon boat trip on Lake Ihema — booked directly through Akagera National Park's safari reservations team. You'll see hippos and crocodiles at close range, plus fish eagles and shoebills if you're lucky. Dinner at the Mihindi campsite restaurant, then sunset over the lake. Ask the camp about joining other travellers' game drives for tomorrow — you can halve vehicle costs by sharing.

Day 2

Akagera National Park to Kigali

Mihindi – Giraffe Valley – Kigali

Up at dawn — morning game drive is the best time for big game. Join a shared 4WD game drive through the park's northern sector, where you're most likely to see elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffalo, antelope, and possibly lion (Akagera reintroduced lions in 2015 and rhino in 2017 — the park's rhinos now live in a fenced sanctuary, so you need a separate booking to visit them). Stop for a picnic lunch near the Giraffe Valley area — park restaurants at Akagera do packed picnic lunches if you ask the camp the night before. Do an afternoon drive back through the southern plains, then exit the park at the main gate and catch the same shared taxi and bus back to Kigali, arriving late afternoon/early evening.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Self-Launched Akagera National Park Safari from Kigali cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £335 per person for 2 days in Akagera National Park, Rwanda. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Kawira Safaris Ltd?+

Yes — Kawira Safaris Ltd charges around £550 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £335 — a saving of roughly £215 (39%) per person.

How long is the Akagera National Park, Rwanda trip?+

This itinerary runs 2 days, covering 2 day-by-day stops through Akagera National Park, Rwanda.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, wildlife, budget trip through Akagera National Park, Rwanda, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
