Trek the spectacular Albanian Riviera independently — from the Ceraunian Mountains of Llogara National Park down to secluded coves, hidden beaches and authentic stone villages along the Ionian coast. Hike shepherd's paths, swim in turquoise bays at Gjipe and Livadhi, explore Himare's old town and finish with a farewell night in Tirana. All the adventure of the guided version, but you call the shots (and keep the savings).

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive in Tirana & travel south to Llogara National Park

Llogara National Park

Fly into Tirana International Airport (TIA), take the Rinas Express shuttle (≈400 Lek / ~£3) to Skanderbeg Square, then grab the Tirana–Vlorë bus from the south bus terminal. From Vlorë, catch one of the frequent furgons (shared minibuses) heading to Llogara/Sarandë along the coastal highway and get off at the Llogara Pass. Check into a family-run mountain guesthouse near the Pass and enjoy a hearty dinner overlooking the Ionian Sea.

🚌Rinas Express shuttle + Tirana–Vlorë bus + furgon to Llogara (~£10)

🛏Family guesthouse near Llogara Pass (~£20)

  • Arrival transfer into Tirana
  • Bus journey south via Narta Lagoon and Vlorë

Day 2

Hike the high coastal mountains of the Karaburun spine

Llogara National Park

From the Llogara Pass, follow the wide gravel path up to the radio towers on the ridge, where the Karaburun Peninsula plunges dramatically into the deep blue Ionian Sea. Climb the rocky trail to Mount Gjipali (1446m) for sweeping panorama views of the whole coastline and the Bay of Vlorë, then descend through the lush 'Deep Pass' rainforest corridor. This trail is well-marked and easy to navigate with a downloaded map (use the Komoot or AllTrails route of the Llogara ridge hike). Return to your guesthouse for the night.

🚌None needed — on foot from the Pass (~£0)

🛏Family guesthouse near Llogara Pass (~£20)

  • Guided-by-map ridge hike to Mount Gjipali (11km, ~4hrs, 425m ascent)
  • Picnic lunch with views over Karaburun Peninsula
~£42
Day 3

Beach-hop the dazzling Ionian Riviera & settle into Himare

Himare

Catch a furgon from Llogara down the coast (jitneys to Sarandë stop in Himare). Drop your bag at a guesthouse in Himare, then either hike or take a short ride to the trailhead to the north. Depending on preference, walk from the hamlet of Vuno through olive groves down to the secluded Gjipe canyon beach below — one of the Riviera's most jaw-dropping spots with turquoise water beneath limestone cliffs (small 200 Lek entry to the beach park). Alternatively continue south to Aquarium Beach and Livadhi Bay for a swim before returning to Himare town for the evening.

🚌Furgon from Llogara to Himare (~£3)

🛏Guesthouse in Himare, twin/family room (~£20)

  • Hike from Vuno to Gjipe Beach via olive groves
  • Swim at Gjipe Beach / Aquarium Beach / Livadhi Bay

Day 4

Quaint villages of the south: Lukova to Piqeras

Lukova / Piqeras

Take a morning furgon 45 minutes south from Himare to the village of Lukova. From here follow the steep shepherd's path up to the coastal ridge, with terraced hills plunging into a turquoise sea and the island of Corfu appearing on the horizon. Traverse the pass through oaks and spring wildflowers before descending the exposed gravel trail into the village of Piqeras. Catch a furgon back to Himare in the afternoon for optional beach time and a relaxed dinner at one of the lively tavernas.

🚌Furgons Himare–Lukova and Piqeras–Himare (~£6)

🛏Guesthouse in Himare (~£20)

  • Self-navigated hike from Lukova to Piqeras (8km, ~4.5hrs)

Day 5

Hike the Old Prisoners Trail down to Bunec & Borsh beaches

Lukova / Borsh

From Lukova (30km south of Himare, again by furgon), follow the flowers, cobblestone alleys and small waterfall through endless olive terraces, descending the old Prisoners Trail all the way to the unusually empty pebbly shore of Bunec Beach for a refreshing swim. Continue along the hillside flora soaking up Mediterranean aromas as the long expanse of Borsh Beach — the Riviera's longest — comes into view. Cool off with another swim, then furgon back to Himare for a final night on the coast.

🚌Furgon Himare–Lukova + Borsh–Himare (~£6)

🛏Guesthouse in Himare (~£20)

  • Self-navigated Old Prisoners Trail hike (12km, ~3.5hrs)

Day 6

Hike through Mediterranean back country: Kudhes to Qeparo, then north to Tirana

Kudhes / Qeparo / Tirana

Catch an early furgon south to the foot of the village of Kudhes. Wind up through olive trees and local houses to the village heart for a coffee with locals, then follow the rocky shepherd's trail lined with pink oleanders and cypress, amid flocks of curious goats, up to green terraced fields with views over the deep blue sea and Corfu. Reach the old town of Qeparo and wander its maze of cobbled streets and ancient stone houses before furgoning down the coast. From Sarandë or Vlorë take the long-distance bus north to Tirana (~4hrs) for your final night in the capital — celebrate with a farewell meal near Skanderbeg Square or the Blloku district.

🚌Furgons to Kudhes & from Qeparo + long-distance bus to Tirana (~£15)

🛏Budget hotel/hostel in Tirana centre (~£20)

  • Self-navigated hike from Kudhes to Qeparo old town (12km, ~4hrs)

Frequently asked questions

How much does Self-Launched: Hike the Coastal Trails of the Albanian Riviera cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £290 per person for 7 days in Albania. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Much Better Adventures?+

Yes — Much Better Adventures charges around £1,199 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £290 — a saving of roughly £909 (76%) per person.

How long is the Albania trip?+

This itinerary runs 7 days, covering 7 day-by-day stops through Albania.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, hiking, beaches trip through Albania, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
