Self-Launched: Hike Morocco's Atlas Mountains & Sleep in a Kasbah

Fly into Marrakech Menara Airport (RAK). Instead of a private transfer, take a shared grand taxi from Marrakech to Imlil — head to the taxi rank near Bab Ghmat or the main bus station (Gare Routière) and negotiate a shared taxi to Asni (~£4-6), then another shared taxi or local minibus from Asni up to Imlil (~£2). The full journey takes around 2 hours and costs a fraction of a private transfer. Check into your guesthouse (dar/auberge) in Imlil, take a stroll around the village, and grab a tagine dinner at a local restaurant. Imlil has several budget-friendly guesthouses with mountain views — ask to see a few rooms before committing.

Set out early from Imlil on the well-marked trail heading southwest toward the small Berber village of Mazik. The route climbs through terraced farmland, walnut groves and juniper trees, with wild thyme underfoot and expanding views of the Toubkal Massif. Reach the Tasghimout Plateau (~2600m) — a natural balcony over the Imlil Valley with sweeping panoramic views, including the snow-capped summit of Toubkal on clear days. Continue along the ridge to the Tizi Mzik Pass (2489m) for a picnic lunch (pack supplies from the village the night before — bread, kefta, cheese and fruit are all available cheaply in Imlil). Descend via a gentler shaded trail through shepherd huts and fruit orchards back into the valley. The route is well-trodden and trail signs are reasonably clear, but hiring a local licensed guide from Imlil (around £25-35/day) is highly recommended, especially for your first hike. From the pass, look down into the quieter Imenane Valley, then take the more exposed climb to the summit of Talamroute (2650m) — a steep but non-technical push that rewards you with a 360° panorama of the Toubkal range and the Imenane and Azzaden valleys. Your final big hike. Set off from Imlil into the lush Tidli Forest on quieter pine and juniper-lined trails with a genuine sense of solitude. Gain altitude steadily past grazing pastures and shepherd shelters, emerging above the treeline to reach the summit of Isk at 2520m — a peaceful, panoramic viewpoint looking back toward Toubkal and its surrounding peaks. Descend into the forest and continue toward Aroumd, the largest and oldest Berber village in the Imlil area, dramatically built on a rocky outcrop with traditional stone houses stacked into the hillside. Wander through the village and chat with locals before following the gentle valley path back to Imlil by mid-afternoon. Celebrate your final evening with a blowout Moroccan dinner at one of the better restaurants in Imlil or at the Kasbah du Toubkal terrace café, which is open to non-residents. Total hike: ~6-7hrs, 13km, 1200m ascent/descent.
