Walking in the Azores — Self-Launched Island Hopping

Walking in the Azores — Self-Launched Island Hopping

14 days · Azores, Portugal

Explore! charges £2,850

£1,365saved per person (48%)

No-markup version: ~£1,485 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

A self-launched version of Explore!'s 14-day guided walking circuit of the central Azores — São Miguel (Sete Cidades, Furnas, whale watching), São Jorge (Caldeira de Cima gorge to Fajã dos Cubres), Pico (UNESCO vineyard landscape, cheese country, optional volcano ascent) and Faial (Caldeira rim, Capelinhos, Praia do Norte). You book your own guesthouses, use SATA/Azores Airlines island flights and the Atlânticoline inter-island ferry, and follow waymarked trails independently. All costs are rough per-person estimates (shared twin/double); the Azores are not a cheap backpacker destination — budget guesthouses and self-catering keep it affordable.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Ponta Delgada

Ponta Delgada, São Miguel

Fly into João Paulo II Airport (PDL) and take the local bus or a short taxi (~€8) into the centre. Check into a central guesthouse or hostel private room and spend the evening on the harbour-front promenade. Wander past the 16th-century Forte de São Brás and the Convent and Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Esperança, then eat at a tasca near the marina. Do a supermarket run for trail snacks and picnic supplies — self-catering breakfasts will save you a lot over two weeks.

Start at the Vista do Rei viewpoint for the classic twin-lake view of Lagoa Verde and Lagoa Azul, then walk the crater rim path down to the Várzea parking area and into the village (roughly 8-10 km, 2.5-3 hrs, easy-moderate). Return to Ponta Delgada in the afternoon. Waymarking is good but bring the Maps.me/Outdooractive GPS track.

Walk the lakeside loop around Lagoa das Furnas (~4 km, 1.5 hrs) and watch cozido lunches being lifted from the volcanic fumeroles. Order your own cozido at a local restaurant (~€18-22pp, book ahead in high season), then spend the afternoon at Terra Nostra botanical gardens with its iron-rich thermal pool — bring old dark swimwear or you'll stain it orange. Both need a taxi transfer or hire car to the trailhead. Note São Jorge has few marked trails — download GPX tracks in advance and carry water, food and rain gear.

Optional add-ons if you want to spend money: a whale-watching trip from Madalena harbour (€49-65pp depending on season, book direct with the operator) or a guided Pico volcano ascent (very strenuous, 6-7 hrs, ~€95-110pp for a small group — book a certified mountain guide in advance, never go alone).

Walk the Caldeira crater rim for views into the forested caldera, then continue west to the Capelinhos volcano, where the 1957-58 eruption added new land to the island — the interpretation centre is worth the €10 entry. Frequently asked questions

How much does Walking in the Azores — Self-Launched Island Hopping cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £1,485 per person for 14 days in Azores, Portugal. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Explore!?+

Yes — Explore! charges around £2,850 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £1,485 — a saving of roughly £1,365 (48%) per person.

How long is the Azores, Portugal trip?+

This itinerary runs 14 days, covering 14 day-by-day stops through Azores, Portugal.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a hiking, adventure, slow-travel trip through Azores, Portugal, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
