A self-launched backpacker version of Tour Mage's 7-day dash from Sarajevo to Skopje through five Balkan countries. You'll swap the private minibus and 4* hotels for intercity buses, a shared shuttle or two, and well-located hostels and guesthouses — while hitting the same headline sights: Sarajevo's Baščaršija and Tunnel of Hope, Mostar's Old Bridge, Dubrovnik's Old Town and Srđ viewpoint, Kotor's walled old town, Tirana's Skanderbeg Square, Lake Ohrid's fortress and paper factory, and Skopje's bazaar and Kale Fortress. It's a fast-paced route: expect long-ish bus days, but you get full control over your time and budget. Costs are approximate per person based on current budget-traveller rates (summer high season excluded).

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Sarajevo — Baščaršija & Tunnel of Hope

Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina

Land at Sarajevo Airport and take trolleybus 31 or a public taxi-meter car (~£2-4) into the old town area — avoid unmetered 'airport taxi' touts. Drop your bag at a guesthouse/hostel within walking distance of Baščaršija, then spend the afternoon on a free walking tour with a local guide (tip-based, ~£5-8) covering the City Hall, Latin Bridge, Gazi Husrev-bey Mosque garden, Clock Tower, Bezistan, Sacred Heart Cathedral, Jewish Temple and the Old Orthodox Church. Late afternoon, take tram line 3 to Ilidža and walk to Vrelo Bosne (Bosna Springs; small entry fee ~£2). Book a Tunnel of Hope visit (entry ~£5) independently — either combine it with a private taxi from Ilidža (~£10) or join a GetYourGuide 'Sarajevo War Tunnel & siege tour' (~£15-20). Dinner of ćevapi in the old bazaar (~£7).

Catch an early bus or train from Sarajevo to Mostar — the train (~£6, 2h, spectacular Neretva canyon scenery) is the highlight of the day; buses run hourly from the main bus station (~£8). Stop off in Konjic on the way (train/bus stop) for a quick look at the Ottoman stone bridge and old town. In Mostar, walk the old town yourself: Stari Most, the Koski Mehmet Pasha Mosque (climb its minaret for the classic bridge view, entry ~£4), and the bazaar along Kujundžiluk. Take an afternoon bus from Mostar to Neum (~£8, 1.5-2h) for a cheap seaside overnight. Neum is Bosnia's only coastal town — eat grilled fish on the waterfront (~£10).

Take the public No. 6 bus or cable car (cable car ~£22 return) up to Srđ for panoramic photos — bus plus a short walk is the budget option. After lunch, take an afternoon bus from Dubrovnik to Kotor (~£15, 2-2.5h with border crossing) and stroll the walled old town on arrival. Continue by local bus Kotor-Budva (~£3, 30 min) or overnight in Kotor if you prefer. Budva has cheap guesthouses by the beach.

Add the Old Paper Factory (a 15-minute walk north, free to wander). In the evening take a one-hour boat trip on Lake Ohrid from the old town harbour (~£10-12, boats leave regularly in season) — or negotiate a shared boat at the quay. Frequently asked questions

How much does Balkan Tour: 5 Countries in 7 Days (Self-Launched) cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £612 per person for 7 days in Balkans: Bosnia & Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, Albania, North Macedonia. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Tour Mage?+

Yes — Tour Mage charges around £1,710 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £612 — a saving of roughly £1,098 (64%) per person.

How long is the Balkans: Bosnia & Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, Albania, North Macedonia trip?+

This itinerary runs 7 days, covering 7 day-by-day stops through Balkans: Bosnia & Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, Albania, North Macedonia.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, culture, city-breaks trip through Balkans: Bosnia & Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, Albania, North Macedonia, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
