21 days · Balkans (Montenegro, Albania, North Macedonia, Kosovo)

G Adventures charges £3,300

£2,080saved per person (63%)

No-markup version: ~£1,220 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

A 21-day self-launched version of G Adventures' Kotor-to-Pristina Balkans run. You'll cover the same ground — the Bay of Kotor and Perast, Budva and Ostrog Monastery, Durmitor and Biogradska Gora, Theth and Shkodër, then on through Lake Ohrid and North Macedonia to Kosovo — using local buses, minivans and shared taxis, staying in hostels and family guesthouses, and booking the boat trips and walking tours yourself. Costs are rough backpacker estimates in GBP; the original operator charges about $4,149 USD (~£3,300) per person, so expect to save well over half.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive in Kotor

Kotor, Montenegro

Fly into Tivat or Podgorica and take a local bus or shared taxi into Kotor (Tivat–Kotor bus ~£2, Podgorica–Kotor bus ~£6). Check into a hostel in or just outside the old town, then spend the evening doing your own loop of the walled city — the Sea Gate, the squares and the cats. Grab a cheap dinner of grilled fish or ćevapi in the old town.

Kotor, Montenegro

Walk to the port area and join a shared boat tour across the Bay of Kotor to Perast and the islet of Our Lady of the Rocks (boat trip ~£15-20, or cheaper on a local passenger boat). Explore Perast's baroque old town on foot, then return to Kotor by early afternoon. Afternoon free — walk the old town walls up to San Giovanni fortress for sunset, or rent a kayak (~£12/hr).

Day 3

Kotor to Žabljak via Budva and Ostrog

Žabljak, Montenegro

This is the trickiest transport day — the operator uses a private van. Do it yourself by bus: local bus Kotor to Budva (~£2.50), wander Budva's old town, then take a bus toward Nikšić and a taxi or shared ride to Ostrog Monastery (~£10-15). From Ostrog, bus onward to Žabljak via Durmitor (long day, ~£10 total). If timing is tight, split it — overnight in Nikšić and finish the run next morning. Stop at Black Lake for an evening stroll if you arrive with light left.

Spend the day walking the lakeside loop through some of Europe's last primeval forest. Rent a boat, bike or kayak in the park for a few pounds if you want more. If budgets are tight, swap it for a bus straight to Podgorica (~£6) and spend the day exploring the capital: the old town, the Ribnica bridge and Millennium Bridge. Evening dinner in the old town.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Balkans Discovery: Montenegro to Kosovo — Self-Launched cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £1,220 per person for 21 days in Balkans (Montenegro, Albania, North Macedonia, Kosovo). This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+

Yes — G Adventures charges around £3,300 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £1,220 — a saving of roughly £2,080 (63%) per person.

How long is the Balkans (Montenegro, Albania, North Macedonia, Kosovo) trip?+

This itinerary runs 21 days, covering 21 day-by-day stops through Balkans (Montenegro, Albania, North Macedonia, Kosovo).

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a culture, hiking, budget trip through Balkans (Montenegro, Albania, North Macedonia, Kosovo), self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
