Baltic Nature Travel charges £1,280

£799saved per person (62%)

No-markup version: ~£481 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

An 11-day self-launched version of Baltic Nature Travel's "Baltic Impressions" group tour, covering Riga, Pärnu, Tallinn, Tartu, rural southern Estonia, Daugavpils and Vilnius independently. You'll use Lux Express and Ecolines coaches between cities (clean, fast, wifi, bookable online for £6-15 a leg), stay in well-located hostels and budget guesthouses, and join free walking tours plus a handful of cheap local excursions instead of a fully guided group. Highlights include Riga's Art Nouveau quarter, Tallinn's medieval Old Town, the university town of Tartu, manor houses and cider farms, Aglona Basilica and the Mark Rothko Art Centre in Daugavpils. Costs are rough estimates for a budget-midrange solo traveller sharing dorms/budget rooms.

Riga, Latvia

Fly into Riga Airport (RIX) and take bus #22 (about £1.50, 30 mins) or a Bolt taxi (£8-10) to the city centre. Check into a hostel or budget guesthouse in the Old Town/Vecrīga or Quiet Centre area. Spend the afternoon orienting yourself: stroll the cobbled streets of Vecrīga, cross the Vanšu Bridge for skyline views, and pick up supplies at a Rimi or Maxima supermarket. Evening: try local grey peas and bacon at a cheap kafe (Lido is a great budget canteen, £6-8 for a full plate).

In the afternoon, walk Alberta iela and Elizabetes iela in the Art Nouveau district — the facades are free to admire from the street, and a small museum ticket (Riga Art Nouveau Centre, ~£7) gets you inside one restored apartment. If you want the countryside, the Ethnographic Open-Air Museum is reachable by bus #1 to Jugla (~£1.50) rather than the tour's £40 excursion — entry is about £4.

Re-board a later coach to Tallinn (about 2 hours, £6-8). Check into a hostel in Tallinn's Old Town — Hostel Tallinn or similar is well placed and cheap.

On the way you can stop at Põltsamaa (bus route passes nearby) to see its castle ruins — or visit on a later local bus if you'd rather keep the day simple. In Tartu, check into a hostel or budget hotel near the Old Town (Tartu Hostel or Looming Hostel are good value). Explore Tartu Old Town: the Town Hall Square, the 'Leaning House', the Kissing Students fountain, and the University of Tartu's main building (free to walk around; the University Museum is ~£6). Tartu to southern Estonia (Grāši area)

This is the hardest leg to do independently, so plan it beforehand. Take a bus from Tartu south towards Valga/Valka on the Latvian border (~1h, £4), then connect by bus or taxi to Gulbene or Stāmeriena (~2h, £6-10) — check schedules on 1188.lv for Latvia and peatus.ee for Estonia. Visit Stāmeriena Manor (entry around £5), a beautiful neo-Gothic manor with a park, and stop at a local cider producer — Talava cider near Gulbene can be visited by arrangement (call ahead, tasting ~£5-8). Stay at a rural guesthouse or manor hotel in the Gulbene/Stāmeriena area; dinner at the guesthouse (~£12).

Break at Aglona to see the Catholic Basilica of Aglona, Latvia's most important pilgrimage site (free entry; the small museum ~£2). The Slutišķi Old Believers' village on the Daugava is best reached with a local taxi from Daugavpils (~£15 return split); it's a photogenic wooden village with a small museum. Overnight in Daugavpils in a budget hotel or guesthouse.

Direct Daugavpils–Vilnius buses run (~3h, £10-12). In the afternoon, wander the bohemian Užupis republic across the river with its street art and the 'Constitution' wall. Frequently asked questions

How much does Baltic Impressions: Self-Launched Riga to Vilnius cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £481 per person for 11 days in Baltics (Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania). This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Baltic Nature Travel?+

Yes — Baltic Nature Travel charges around £1,280 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £481 — a saving of roughly £799 (62%) per person.

How long is the Baltics (Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania) trip?+

This itinerary runs 11 days, covering 11 day-by-day stops through Baltics (Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania).

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a culture, budget, backpacker trip through Baltics (Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania), self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
