Bangkok Temples & Overnight Train South

Phrom Lok Village Homestay

Phrom Lok to Ao Nang

Long-tail boats to Railay Beach depart from Ao Nang Beach regularly (~£2 each way, 10-min ride) — Railay is car-free and surrounded by cliffs, making it one of the most scenic spots in Thailand. Rock climbing on the famous limestone crags is bookable directly from Ao Nang or Railay (Half-day from ~£20). Sea kayaking around the islands is another great option, bookable at any beach operator. Crossing into Malaysia: Arrive Penang

Today is a long but rewarding travel day — from Thailand into Malaysia. Take a shared minivan or bus from Ao Nang/Krabi to Hat Yai (~3-4 hrs, ~£8-10), then a local bus or shared taxi to the Bukit Kayu Hitam/Sadao border crossing (~1-1.5 hrs). Cross the border on foot (straightforward for most passport holders), then pick up a bus or shared taxi on the Malaysian side heading toward Penang. The full journey takes around 7-9 hrs. Alternatively, book a direct Ao Nang–Penang bus (operators like Tharnthong or Khanithong run these, ~£12-15 via 12go.asia). Arrive in Penang and check into Georgetown. Your leader for the evening is the city's legendary street food scene — head out to Gurney Drive Hawker Centre or Chulia Street Night Market for a self-guided food tour.

Pick up a free heritage trail map from your hostel or the Tourism Penang office and walk the historic streets yourself — you'll find colonial shophouses, vibrant street art (Ernest Zacharevic's murals are unmissable), Chinese clan jetties, Hindu temples and mosques all within walking distance. Must-visits include the Khoo Kongsi clan house (~£2.50), Penang Museum (free), and the Chew Jetty floating village (free). For views, hike up Penang Hill (shuttle bus ~£3.50 return, or hike free) — the panorama is stunning. Penang to Cameron Highlands via Ipoh

Then take a Rapid Penang bus to Penang Sentral terminal and board a bus to Ipoh (~2.5 hrs, ~£4-5). Ipoh is a wonderfully photogenic city — explore the Old Town murals, grab the famous white coffee, and visit the Perak Tong or Sam Poh Tong cave temples (free or small donation).
