Belgium & Netherlands by Land: Brussels to Amsterdam the Self-Launched Way

6 days · Belgium & Netherlands

CroisiEurope River Cruises charges £1,220

£845saved per person (69%)

No-markup version: ~£375 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

A self-launched, overland reworking of CroisiEurope's 6-day Brussels–Antwerp–Rotterdam–Amsterdam river cruise. Instead of sailing on the MS Lafayette, you'll ride the same corridor by InterCity train and use hostel/budget-hotel beds in each city. Highlights are preserved: Antwerp's old town, a Rotterdam harbour hop, Utrecht's canals, The Hague's Binnenhof courtyards, Amsterdam canals, and the windmills at Zaanse Schans plus Volendam. Expect independent daily costs around £60–70 plus ~£60 of intercity rail (book in advance on the NS/Belgian Rail apps for the cheaper fare). Costs are rough backpacker estimates in GBP and exclude flights.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Brussels & welcome wander

Brussels

Land or train in and check into a central hostel near Grand-Place (Sleep Well Youth Hostel or similar, ~£30–40 dorm). Swap the river-cruise welcome cocktail for a golden-hour loop of Grand-Place, the Galeries Royales Saint-Hubert and the Manneken Pis. Finish with a cheap dinner of moules or a friterie cone in the Sainte-Catherine quarter.

🚌Arrive Brussels by Eurostar or Thalys; all sights walkable

Brussels to Antwerp — old town on foot

Antwerp

Morning optional: a GetYourGuide small-group Brussels walking tour (~£15) or a self-guided loop of the Royal Palace and Mont des Arts. Around midday take the InterCity from Bruxelles-Central to Antwerpen-Centraal (35 min, ~£8–10). Check into a hostel near the station, then replicate the cruise's afternoon 'stroll with onboard hostess' with a free self-guided walk: Grote Markt, Cathedral of Our Lady, the Plantin-Moretus area and Het Steen on the Scheldt. Dinner at a budget bistro or the Meir street food halls.

Antwerp to Rotterdam — harbour & architecture

Rotterdam

Morning InterCity Antwerp → Rotterdam Centraal (~1h10, ~£15). Dump your bag at a hostel in the Cool district, then swap the cruise day for a self-booked Rotterdam Watertaxi hop across the Maas (~£4 per trip) to see the harbour from the water. Walk the Erasmus Bridge, Markthal and Kubuswoningen, and if you're keen, add a free walking tour (pay-what-you-want, ~£5 tip). Evening at a Witte de Withstraat bar.

🚌Belgian Rail / NS InterCity Antwerp → Rotterdam (~1h10, ~£15); local tram or watertaxi

Rotterdam to Amsterdam via Utrecht & The Hague

Amsterdam

Do the cruise's 'morning cruise to Utrecht' and optional Hague excursion in one rail day. Early train Rotterdam → Utrecht (~40 min, ~£9), then a self-guided canalside walk of the Oudegracht and a climb of the Dom Tower if it's open (~£10). Lunch, then Utrecht → The Hague (~1h, ~£13) for the Binnenhof courtyards and Mauritshuis exterior on the Hofvijver, before a 50-min train to Amsterdam (~£10). Check into a hostel in the Jordaan or De Pijp.

Day 5

Amsterdam canals, Zaanse Schans & Volendam

Amsterdam

Book a 75-minute canal cruise direct or via GetYourGuide (~£16) in the morning in place of the gala dinner's glamour. Then in the afternoon take the NS Sprinter to Zaandam (~15 min, ~£3) and the local bus to Zaanse Schans for the working windmills (~£9 combined return with a regional day ticket) — a self-bookable stand-in for the cruise's Zaanse Schans/Volendam excursion. Back in Amsterdam, cook in the hostel or grab a rijsttafel deal in De Pijp.

Day 6

Amsterdam back to Brussels — depart

Brussels

Coffee, a stroopwafel from a market stall and a last Jordaan wander, then the InterCity Brussels → Amsterdam in reverse (~1h50, ~£20 if booked ahead) or a Thalys/Eurostar if you want speed. The cruise ends with an onboard buffet breakfast; you'll have a cheaper one at the hostel and arrive Brussels around noon with time for onward flights or Eurostar home.

🚌NS/Thalys Amsterdam → Brussels (~1h50–2h, ~£20 booked ahead)

🛏Departure day — no overnight

Frequently asked questions

How much does Belgium & Netherlands by Land: Brussels to Amsterdam the Self-Launched Way cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £375 per person for 6 days in Belgium & Netherlands. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with CroisiEurope River Cruises?+

Yes — CroisiEurope River Cruises charges around £1,220 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £375 — a saving of roughly £845 (69%) per person.

How long is the Belgium & Netherlands trip?+

This itinerary runs 6 days, covering 6 day-by-day stops through Belgium & Netherlands.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a culture, city-breaks, slow-travel trip through Belgium & Netherlands, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
