Northern Brazil & Amazon — Self-Launched
14 days · Brazil
G Adventures charges £2,650
No-markup version: ~£1,625 per person
Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.
A 14-day self-launched version of G Adventures' SZNB trip, running from Rio de Janeiro up through the Amazon, the dune-backed beaches of Jericoacoara, Salvador and the waterfalls of Chapada Diamantina National Park. It swaps the small-group tour, private CEO and bundled internal flights for self-booked GOL/Azul/LATAM domestic flights, long-distance coaches, shared 4x4 transfers and locally booked jungle and park guides — same route, same highlights, roughly two-thirds of the price. Costs are approximate backpacker/budget-traveller estimates in GBP and assume shared hostel or guesthouse rooms.
Day-by-day
Arrive Rio de Janeiro
Rio de Janeiro
Fly into Galeão (GIG) or Santos Dumont (SDU) and get to your hostel in Botafogo or Copacabana. The 'Real' airport bus runs to Copacabana for around £7; a metered taxi or Uber is £12-18. Spend the evening acclimatising — walk the Copacabana promenade, grab a cheap kilo buffet (por quilo) dinner and stock up on water and cash. ATM withdrawals here are your best bet before heading north, where machines are scarcer.
🚌Airport bus ~£7 or Uber ~£15
🛏Hostel dorm or private double in Botafogo/Copacabana (£12-18 pp)
- →Copacabana and Ipanema beach walk at sunset
- →Kilo buffet dinner in Botafogo
Rio to the Amazon — Manaus and jungle lodge
Amazonas (Rio Urubu / Rio Negro)
Morning flight from Rio to Manaus (book GOL, Azul or LATAM direct online, roughly £120-170 one way, 4h). From Manaus airport take a taxi or app ride to the jungle lodge operator's pickup point; most budget lodges (3-4 day packages with transport, meals and guides) leave in the early afternoon. Travel by motorised canoe up the river into the flooded forest, spotting birds and river dolphins, then an evening caiman-spotting boat trip after dark. Book the lodge directly or via GetYourGuide — a 3-day/2-night package typically runs £130-180 pp including all meals and guiding.
🚌Domestic flight Rio-Manaus ~£145; lodge road + canoe transfer included in package
🛏Jungle lodge, hammock or simple twin room (£25-35 pp within package)
- →Motorised canoe up the Rio Negro/Amazon
- →Evening caiman-spotting boat excursion
Amazon jungle hikes and community visit
Amazonas
Full day with a local guide from the lodge: two hikes into the igapó and terra firme forest learning about medicinal plants, giant kapok trees, rubber history and wildlife (monkeys, sloths, macaws if you're lucky). Lunch is usually at a riverside or ribeirinho community, usually the one partnered with the lodge — bring small cash for handicrafts. Bring long sleeves, DEET and a headtorch; this is remote country with limited signal.
🚌On foot and by canoe with lodge guides (included)
🛏Jungle lodge (£25-35 pp)
- →Guided rainforest hike
- →Local community lunch and cultural visit
- →Night walk or canoe drift
Dawn canoe, back to Manaus, fly to Fortaleza
Manaus / Fortaleza
Early morning canoe out to catch the jungle waking up — birds, howler monkeys, mist on the water. Return by boat and road to Manaus by midday, collect any luggage stored at the lodge office, then take an afternoon or evening flight to Fortaleza (roughly £110-150 one way, book in advance for the cheapest fares). Overnight in Fortaleza's beach neighbourhood, Meireles or Iracema.
🚌Canoe + lodge transfer (included); flight Manaus-Fortaleza ~£130
🛏Budget hotel or hostel in Meireles, Fortaleza (£12-18 pp)
- →Sunrise canoe excursion
- →Evening stroll along Praia de Iracema
Fortaleza to Jericoacoara
Jericoacoara
Long travel day north up the coast. Either take the daily shuttle/executivo van direct from Fortaleza to Jericoacoara (around £15-20, 5-6h, bookable on GetYourGuide or through your pousada) or the cheaper local bus to Jijoca (£8) plus the mandatory 4x4 transfer across the dunes into Jeri (£4-5 — regular cars can't make the last stretch). Arrive late afternoon in time for sunset from Duna do Pôr do Sol, the free nightly ritual on the sand dune above town.

Shared tours cost about £15-20 pp (or charter the whole 4x4 for £45-55 if you've met people — the operator price of 400BRL per group). In the evening watch or try capoeira on the beach; free.

Fortaleza
Morning at leisure — last swim, or a sandboard (board rental ~£5). There are two departures a day of the Jeri-Fortaleza shuttle (roughly 9am and 1pm, ~£17); take whichever suits and be back in the city by early evening. Fortaleza has genuinely good nightlife around Iracema and Ponte dos Ingleses — go with hostel people and use app taxis after dark.

A group surf lesson runs about £25-30 pp, SUP rental £8-10/hour; the operator's kite lesson rate of 550BRL pp is roughly £85. Or do nothing at all: there are dozens of beach barracas with hammocks and £3 caipirinhas.

Frequently asked questions
How much does Northern Brazil & Amazon — Self-Launched cost?+
Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £1,625 per person for 14 days in Brazil. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.
Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+
Yes — G Adventures charges around £2,650 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £1,625 — a saving of roughly £1,025 (39%) per person.
How long is the Brazil trip?+
This itinerary runs 14 days, covering 14 day-by-day stops through Brazil.
How do I join this trip?+
You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.
Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+
Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.
Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+
Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.
What kind of trip is this?+
This is a adventure, backpacker, beaches trip through Brazil, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
