Day-by-day

Day 1

Cape Peninsula Loop — Chapman's Peak, Cape of Good Hope, Penguins & Kirstenbosch

Cape Town / Cape Peninsula

Start early (07:00) from your hostel in the City Bowl or Observatory. Take the Metrorail Southern Line train from Cape Town station to Fish Hoek (~40 min, R15–R25 / £1–£1.50 — buy a single, go before 09:00 to avoid rush hour). From Fish Hoek, either hop on a licensed metered taxi/Uber to Chapman's Peak Drive (~25 min, £8–£10) or, cheaper, take the Fish Hoek–Simon's Town road and instead ride the day-hire route by bicycle if you're comfortable. Walk/short transfer the 9 km Chapman's Peak Drive viewpoints (toll ~R60/£2.70 for vehicles — free on foot/bike). Continue by Uber or shared taxi to Cape of Good Hope / Cape Point gate (~£6–£8). Pay the Cape Point Nature Reserve conservation fee at the gate (~R400 / £18) and the Cape of Good Hope extra-point fee if walking down to the sign. Spend 2 hrs on the boardwalk and lighthouse views — watch for bontebok, Cape mountain zebra, baboons (don't feed them) and raptors. Lunch at the Cape Point takeaway or Cape of Good Hope café (~£7). In the afternoon head to Boulders Beach, Simon's Town via Uber/shared taxi (~£5–£7); entry to the Boulders penguin boardwalk ~R190 / £8.50. If you'd rather greens than penguins, swap in Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden (~R250 / £11, plus ~£5 taxi from town). Finish with a swim at Boulders or Fish Hoek beach, then train back to Cape Town (~£1.50). If you want a guided hand without a coach, book a small-group Cape Point day trip on GetYourGuide (from ~£45–£60 incl. transport) — but the DIY train+taxi version above usually lands cheaper.

🚌Metrorail Southern Line train Cape Town→Fish Hoek (~£1.20); Uber/metered taxi legs between Fish Hoek, Chapman's Peak, Cape Point and Simon's Town (~£20–£25 total if shared or split, ~£30 solo); return train (~£1.20). Alternatively a full-day private driver-hire via GetYourGuide/Klook from ~£55–£70 pp if shared in a group of 4.

🛏Independent booking: any City Bowl / Observatory / Sea Point hostel dorm (e.g. a backpackers dorm ~£14–£18/night) — not included in the day's cost.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, wildlife, budget trip through Cape Town & the Cape Peninsula, South Africa, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
