Golden Triangle India Tours charges £1,839

No-markup version: ~£565 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

A self-launched version of Golden Triangle India Tours' 12-day tiger-photography circuit through Bandhavgarh, Kanha and Ranthambore. Book your own MP Forest Department jeep safaris directly (online permits, ~£30-40 per jeep shared by up to 6), take the Indian Railways sleeper trains instead of private transfers, and stay in budget lodges just outside the park gates. Same parks, same golden-hour game drives, roughly a third of the price. Best run Oct-Jun — parks are closed to tourists in the monsoon (roughly 1 Jul - 30 Sep). Note: most parks close Wednesday afternoons/whole Wednesdays, so build rest days in. All costs are approximate, per person.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Delhi — Old & New Delhi on foot and by metro

New Delhi

Land at IGI Airport, take the Airport Express Metro to New Delhi station area (~£1.50) and check into a hostel or budget guesthouse in Paharganj or Karol Bagh. Spend the afternoon self-touring the classic circuit: Humayun's Tomb (~£6 foreigner ticket), then Qutub Minar complex (~£6). The Lotus Temple, Rashtrapati Bhavan and India Gate are all free from outside — take the metro and auto-rickshaw between them. Grab dinner in Paharganj. In the evening, buy your train ticket for tomorrow at the foreign-tourist quota counter at New Delhi station (or pre-book on IRCTC/ixigo).

Overnight train to Umaria, transfer to Bandhavgarh

Delhi → Umaria → Bandhavgarh

Most of the day is yours in Delhi — do a free bazaar walk or a cheap cooking class. In the afternoon catch the overnight train from New Delhi (or Hazrat Nizamuddin) south-east toward Umaria/Katni — the classic options are trains toward Katni or the Utkal/Kalinga route; check ixigo for exact services and book 3AC (~£18-25, far cheaper than the tour's private arrangement). Sleeper trains in India are booked out well ahead — reserve two months out on IRCTC. Bring a padlock, a bedsheet and snacks.

Arrive Umaria — first afternoon jeep safari at Bandhavgarh

Bandhavgarh

Arrive Umaria or Katni early morning; share a taxi or take a local bus the ~35-60km to Tala village at the Bandhavgarh gate (~£4-8 shared). Check in, sleep off the train, then take the afternoon safari slot (roughly 2.30-6pm, Oct-Jun). Bandhavgarh has one of India's highest tiger densities and the Tala zone is the classic. Book jeep permits yourself via the MP Forest Department online portal or through your lodge — permits ~£8-10 each and a jeep (6 seats) ~£35-45, so ~£10-15 per person shared. Your guide and driver will be registered park naturalists.

Day 4

Bandhavgarh — morning + afternoon safaris

Bandhavgarh

Two game drives today: the morning slot (roughly 6-10am) is best for light and predator movement; the afternoon slot for sloth bear, leopard and gaur. Spend the middle of the day editing photos and charging batteries (carry a power bank and spare cards — the lodge may have limited sockets). Bandhavgarh's Magadhi and Tala zones hold most sightings. Book your next day's permits the same evening.

Day 5

Bandhavgarh — final full safari day

Bandhavgarh

Another morning and afternoon drive, ideally switching zones (Khitauli or Magadhi) for variety. Afternoon: hike up to Bandhavgarh Fort with a local guide (~£5) for views over the reserve, or visit the Bagheli village and the Chandrika Mata temple. Arrange tomorrow's shared taxi or bus toward Kanha — the drive is long (approx 6-7 hours via Umaria and Mandla) so agree a price the night before.

Road transfer to Kanha — settle in at Sarhi gate

Bandhavgarh → Kanha

Long but scenic day: shared taxi or local buses via Mandla to Kanha (~£10-15 shared, or ~£45 for a private car if you find fellow travellers to split it). Base yourself near the Sarhi or Mukki gate, where the budget lodges and forest guesthouses cluster. Evening: birdwatching around the buffer zone and an early night — Kanha's morning gate opens before dawn.

Day 7

Kanha — morning and afternoon safaris

Kanha

Kanha is the closest park in India to a real wilderness — sal forests, maidans and the highest chance of seeing both tiger and barasingha (hard-ground swamp deer). Book permits and jeep through the MP Forest Department portal or your lodge (~£10-15 pp shared). Morning slot, then lunch and rest, then the afternoon slot. Ask specifically for the Kisli or Mukki zones for tiger density.

Kanha → Jabalpur → Sawai Madhopur

Morning safari, then transfer to Jabalpur (~3-4 hrs shared taxi ~£10). Evening train from Jabalpur toward Sawai Madhopur — usually via Bhopal or Kota on one of the Delhi-Mumbai trunk services; book 3AC in advance on IRCTC (~£15-20). This is a long haul (roughly 14-16 hours), so stock up on food and water before boarding.

Ranthambore

Arrive mid-morning, take a shared auto or local bus the ~10km to Sawai Madhopur town and check into a budget guesthouse. Sleep off the train, then afternoon safari into Ranthambore (zones 1-6 as booked — zones 3 and 4 are famously photogenic with the lakes and the fort). Permits via the Rajasthan Forest Department online portal (~£10-13 pp in a shared jeep/canter). Evening: tiger-tracking talk at the guesthouse.

Ranthambore — full day of morning and afternoon drives

Ranthambore

Morning and afternoon safaris. Ranthambore is the classic 'tiger in a fort' park — the 10th-century fort sits inside the reserve, and there are leopards, sloth bears, marsh crocodiles and huge sambar herds. Between drives, walk the old town and the Chauth Mata temple. Book one last permit for tomorrow morning if you want a final shot at a sighting.

Frequently asked questions

How much does India Tiger Safari & Wildlife Photography: Self-Launched cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £565 per person for 12 days in Central & Northern India (Delhi, Bandhavgarh, Kanha, Ranthambore). This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Golden Triangle India Tours?+

Yes — Golden Triangle India Tours charges around £1,839 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £565 — a saving of roughly £1,274 (69%) per person.

How long is the Central & Northern India (Delhi, Bandhavgarh, Kanha, Ranthambore) trip?+

This itinerary runs 12 days, covering 12 day-by-day stops through Central & Northern India (Delhi, Bandhavgarh, Kanha, Ranthambore).

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, wildlife, backpacker trip through Central & Northern India (Delhi, Bandhavgarh, Kanha, Ranthambore), self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
