Self-Launched GR20 Trek: Northern Corsica (Vizzavona to Bonifatu)
8 days · Corsica, France
Much Better Adventures charges £1,595
No-markup version: ~£520 per person
Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.
Tackle the northern half of Europe's toughest long-distance trek entirely independently — same iconic route from Vizzavona to Bonifatu, same mountain refuges and campsites, but without the guided group price tag. The GR20 is a well-marked trail (red and white waymarks throughout) that experienced mountain hikers can absolutely self-launch. You'll pre-book refuge nights directly, carry your own pack, and navigate via the excellent Cicerone guidebook and IGN 1:25,000 maps. Estimated saving versus the Much Better Adventures guided group is significant — the main costs are flights, refuge/campsite fees, and food. This is a serious Level 6 alpine trek; only attempt it if you have multi-day mountain hiking experience and a solid head for heights.
Day-by-day
Arrive at Bastia — transfer to Vizzavona
Vizzavona, Corsica
Fly into Bastia-Poretta Airport (BIA). From the airport, take the CFC regional train toward Ajaccio — Vizzavona is a direct stop on the Bastia–Ajaccio line (approx. 2h, ~€15). Alternatively, a shared taxi or pre-booked private transfer costs around £50–70 for a group splitting costs. Check in to the Hôtel du Monte d'Oro or the gîte/auberge at Vizzavona, which offer dorm beds and half-board options. Meet fellow GR20 trekkers at dinner — the trail community forms naturally. Study your IGN map and Cicerone guide this evening.

Trek Day 1: Vizzavona to Petra Piana
Petra Piana Refuge, GR20 North
A long, demanding day (19–21km, ~9hrs, +1,500m). Set off early from Vizzavona, following GR20 red-white waymarks north. Ascend alongside the Cascade des Anglais to Brèche de Muratellu (2,100m), then along the exposed ridge via Pinzi Corbini. In poor weather, use the lower valley variant via Tolla along the Manganelo river — equally spectacular. Arrive at Petra Piana refuge (1,842m) for dinner. Book the refuge in advance (April–May) directly with the PNRC (Parc Naturel Régional de Corse) at the start of the season — they open bookings online around March.

Manganu Refuge, Camputile Plateau
A shorter, more technical day (11km, ~5.5hrs, +800m/-1,020m). After breakfast at the refuge, head north along the ridge above Petra Piana, navigating chain-assisted rocky sections — take your time and enjoy the lunar landscape. Pass above Lac Capitello with dramatic views east to the Rotundu massif and west to the Mediterranean. Descend to Manganu refuge on the edge of the Camputile Plateau. Afternoon is free to rest, dry gear, and enjoy the plateau views. Book dinner and your tent pitch in advance.

Trek Day 3: Camputile Plateau to Col de Vergio (Castel di Vergio)
Castel di Vergio / Col de Vergio
A long but more forgiving day (16km, ~6.5hrs, +540m/-740m). Leave Manganu through beech woods and open hillside to reach the beautiful glacial Lac de Nino at 1,743m — one of the GR20's highlights. Take a proper break on the lakeshore before continuing north, dropping to Col St Pierre and following the horseshoe trail to Castel di Vergio, Corsica's small ski station. The refuge here has a bar and hot showers — a genuine treat. You can arrange to have a drop-bag (spare clothes, supplies) waiting here if you've left it with accommodation in Vizzavona or arranged a baggage transfer service via local taxi (pre-arrange with Hôtel Monte d'Oro or a local taxi firm, ~£30–50 split between group).
🚌On foot. Optional drop-bag transfer: arrange with local taxi Vizzavona/Corte area (~£30–50, split if travelling with others)

Trek Day 4: Col de Vergio to Melarie Valley (U Vallone)
U Vallone Refuge, Melarie Valley
A varied day (14km, ~6.5hrs, +810m/-780m) through the stunning Valdu Niellu forest. Follow the Golo River upstream through pine-fringed valleys with natural swimming pools — stop for a refreshing dip mid-route on the smooth sun-baked rocks. The trail climbs to the ridge with views west to the Corsican coast and distant islands before descending past the high Ciuttolu di I Mori refuge (2,000m, the highest in Corsica, between Tafanatu and Paglia Orba) to U Vallone. Pre-book dinner at U Vallone — the refuge meals are good value and essential for restoring energy.
🚌On foot

Trek Day 5: Melarie Valley to Haut-Asco
Haut-Asco (Ascu Stagnu) Refuge
The most challenging and spectacular day of the trek (10km, ~8hrs, +1,260m/-1,230m). A steep, rocky, slow climb to the foothills of Monte Cinto (2,706m), Corsica's highest peak. There may be snowpack in June and July — microspikes are worth carrying. Gain the Bocca Crucetta ridge and push on to Pointe des Eboulis at 2,607m — the highest point on the entire GR20. The descent is precipitous and scree-laden; use trekking poles and take your time. Emerge into the old ski station of Haut-Asco with a second drop-bag option (arrange ahead with a local taxi service). Cold beer at the refuge bar is mandatory.
🚌On foot. Optional second drop-bag taxi transfer (~£30–50 split)

Trek Day 6 (Final Stage): Haut-Asco to Bonifatu — then Calvi
Calvi, Corsica
The triumphant final stage (11km, ~7hrs, +690m/-1,600m). Climb from Haut-Asco to Bocca di Stagnu at the foot of Muvrella (2,148m), where the Bay of Calvi comes into spectacular view. Traverse to Muvrella Lake — one of the most beautiful vistas on the entire route. Cross the famous Spasimata footbridge, pass Carozzu refuge and make the final dramatic descent along the Mare e Monti trail to Bonifatu in the Fango forest. From Bonifatu, arrange a pre-booked taxi to Calvi (approx. 25km, ~£20–30pp split, or book via TaxiCalvi or similar local firm). Check in to a hostel or budget hotel in Calvi — you've earned a hot shower, a real bed, and a proper meal. Head to the Calvi waterfront for dinner and drinks to celebrate.
🚌On foot to Bonifatu, then pre-booked taxi to Calvi, ~£20–30pp split

Frequently asked questions
How much does Self-Launched GR20 Trek: Northern Corsica (Vizzavona to Bonifatu) cost?+
Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £520 per person for 8 days in Corsica, France. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.
Is this cheaper than booking with Much Better Adventures?+
Yes — Much Better Adventures charges around £1,595 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £520 — a saving of roughly £1,075 (67%) per person.
How long is the Corsica, France trip?+
This itinerary runs 8 days, covering 8 day-by-day stops through Corsica, France.
How do I join this trip?+
You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.
Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+
Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.
Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+
Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.
What kind of trip is this?+
This is a hiking, adventure, backpacker trip through Corsica, France, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
