Bamba Travel charges £975

£554saved per person (57%)

No-markup version: ~£421 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

An independent, self-launched version of Bamba Travel's 8-day Costa Rica Nature Explorer: San José, the Caribbean beach town of Puerto Viejo de Talamanca (Cahuita National Park and the Jaguar Rescue Center), then Arenal/La Fortuna for volcano trails, waterfall swims and hot springs. Instead of a partially guided package with shared shuttle transfers, you'll use Costa Rica's excellent public bus network (MEPE / Tralapa / public coaches) and book the two key excursions directly or via GetYourGuide. Accommodation is hostel private rooms and simple guesthouses of a comparable standard to the operator's mid-range stays. Costs are backpacker/mid-budget estimates in GBP and exclude international flights.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive in San José — city stroll and orientate

San José

Land at Juan Santamaría International Airport (SJO) and take an official orange airport taxi (~₡12,000–15,000 / £16–20) or the TUASA/Starbus airport bus to the city centre for around ₡700–1,500 (£1–2). Check into a hostel or guesthouse in the Barrio Amón / Barrio Escalante area — walkable, safe-ish by day and full of cafés. Spend the afternoon on a self-guided loop: Parque Morazán and Parque España, the ornate National Theatre (exterior free; guided interior tour ~£6), the Gold Museum and the Pre-Columbian Jade Museum if you want culture. Dinner in Barrio Escalante's food street. Note that most Days 1–8 breakfasts were included in the original package, so budget them here.

🚌Airport taxi or public bus; everything else on foot

🛏Hostel private room or simple guesthouse, Barrio Amón/Escalante (~£18–25/night)

  • →Self-guided walk: Parque Morazán, Parque España, National Theatre
  • →Optional Gold Museum or Jade Museum (~£8–10)
  • →Barrio Escalante dinner crawl
~£58
Day 2

San José to Puerto Viejo de Talamanca

Puerto Viejo de Talamanca

Travel to the Caribbean coast on the public bus. The MEPE/Tralapa coach leaves the Terminal Gran Terminal del Caribe (Avenida 11) for Limón/Puerto Viejo; the direct San José–Puerto Viejo service takes about 4.5–5 hours and costs roughly ₡6,000–8,000 (£8–11). Go early — buses fill up, so buy your ticket at the terminal the day before or arrive 45 minutes before departure. The road over the Cerro de la Muerte is scenic; you'll drop into humid banana country before reaching the laid-back reggae-and-beach vibe of Puerto Viejo. Settle into your guesthouse, walk to Playa Negra for sunset, and eat Caribbean-style rice-and-beans (gallo pinto with coconut) at a local soda for £5–7.

🚌Public coach San José–Puerto Viejo, ~₡7,000 (£9), 4.5–5 hrs

🛏Hostel or guesthouse private room, Puerto Viejo (~£15–22/night)

  • →Scenic public bus ride over the interior mountains
  • →Sunset walk to Playa Negra
  • →Caribbean dinner at a local soda
~£45
Day 3

Cahuita National Park + Jaguar Rescue Center

Cahuita / Puerto Viejo

Take a local bus or shared taxi north to Cahuita (about 30–40 min, ₡1,000–2,000 / £1.50–3). Cahuita National Park has a voluntary donation entry (suggested ₡2,000–4,000) and one of the best easy wildlife walks in the country — a flat 8 km coastal trail through rainforest where white-faced capuchins, sloths, howler monkeys, raccoons and iguanas are near-guaranteed. You can walk it independently with a downloaded bird/mammal ID app, or hire a local guide at the entrance for around £20–25 per group. Snorkel the coral reef offshore (bring or rent gear in Cahuita, ~£8) and lunch on the beach. On the way back, stop at the Jaguar Rescue Center near Playa Chiquita — entry around ₡20,000 (£20) booked direct on their website or on GetYourGuide; visit slots are by appointment, so book 2–3 days ahead. The original tour bundled a guided Cahuita walk with lunch — this version lets you pick your own guide and lunch spot.

🚌Local bus Puerto Viejo–Cahuita return, ~£3–6

🛏Hostel or guesthouse private room, Puerto Viejo (~£15–22/night)

  • →Cahuita National Park coastal wildlife trail (independent walk)
  • →Optional local guide at park entrance (~£20–25/group)
  • →Snorkelling the Cahuita reef (gear hire ~£8)
  • →Jaguar Rescue Center visit (~£20, book ahead)
~£62
Day 4

Playa Chiquita, Punta Uva and beach time

Puerto Viejo

A free-form day on the southern Caribbean beaches. Rent a bike in Puerto Viejo (~£6–8/day) and ride the flat coastal road south through Playa Cocles to Playa Chiquita and Punta Uva — jungle meeting white-sand coves, arguably the prettiest stretch of coast in Costa Rica. Swim, read in the shade of almond trees, and stop at a beach-side café. Optional extras: a surf lesson at Playa Cocles (~£30–35 for a 2-hour group lesson, bookable direct or on GetYourGuide), or a snorkel/boat trip out to the reef. Keep the evening slow — dinner at a Caribbean BBQ or a reggae bar with live music.

🚌Bike hire ~£7/day (or local bus ~£1.5 each way)

🛏Hostel or guesthouse private room, Puerto Viejo (~£15–22/night)

  • →Bike ride to Playa Chiquita and Punta Uva
  • →Swimming and beach lounging
  • →Optional surf lesson at Cocles (~£32)
  • →Live music at a reggae bar
~£50
Day 5

Puerto Viejo to La Fortuna

La Fortuna / Arenal

The longest transit of the trip. The public route is Puerto Viejo → San José (MEPE coach, ~4.5 hrs, ~£9) then San José → La Fortuna (Terminal San Carlos, ~2.5–3 hrs, ~₡4,000–5,000 / £5–7), so leave Puerto Viejo on the 06:30–07:00 bus to make the connection. A faster, comfier alternative if you'd rather not backtrack is a direct shared tourist shuttle Puerto Viejo–La Fortuna (about 5.5–6 hrs, £35–45, bookable via Hostelworld, GetYourGuide or local operators like Caribe Shuttle) — still cheaper than the operator's packaged transfer. Arrive in La Fortuna with Arenal Volcano looming over the town, check into a hostel or guesthouse, and browse the town's sodas and cafés for dinner.

🚌Public coaches via San José, ~£14–16 total, 7–8 hrs — or direct shared shuttle £35–45, ~6 hrs

🛏Hostel or guesthouse private room, La Fortuna (~£15–25/night)

  • →Transit day across the continental divide
  • →Evening in La Fortuna town — markets, cafés, volcano views
~£48
Day 6

Arenal Volcano trails, La Fortuna Waterfall and hot springs

La Fortuna

A full adventure day. Start early: take a local bus or taxi (~£2–4) toward the park and walk the Arenal Volcano 1968 trails or the El Silencio/Mistico hanging bridges area — entry to Arenal Volcano National Park is around £12–15 per person, and the well-maintained trails give clear views of the volcano cone on clear mornings. Alternatively book a guided Arenal volcano and hanging bridges tour on GetYourGuide (~£45–60 incl. transport and guide). In the afternoon, taxi to La Fortuna Waterfall (entry ~£15–18; 500+ steps down to a swimmable pool — genuinely worth it). Finish at one of the free or low-cost riverside hot springs spots (e.g. the public El Choyín / río Tabacón roadside pools, free) or a paid hot springs resort day pass (~£25–40). Self-book everything rather than the operator's optional add-ons and you'll pay a fraction of the group rate.

🚌Local buses and short taxis around Arenal, ~£6–10

🛏Hostel or guesthouse private room, La Fortuna (~£15–25/night)

  • →Arenal Volcano National Park trails (~£13 entry)
  • →La Fortuna Waterfall swim (~£16 entry)
  • →Free riverside hot springs at El Choyín, or paid hot springs day pass (~£30)
  • →Optional zipline or hanging bridges (~£40–60)
~£78
Day 7

La Fortuna to San José

San José

A slower morning: coffee with volcano views, a walk around town, maybe a short hike or a soak before leaving. Take the afternoon public bus from La Fortuna to San José's Terminal San Carlos (~2.5–3 hrs, ~₡4,000–5,000 / £5–7). Check back into a hostel in the Barrio Amón or Escalante area, then spend the evening on a relaxed city loop — cocktails or craft beer in Escalante, dinner at a city-centre restaurant, and a last-night stroll through the illuminated Parque Morazán.

🚌Public coach La Fortuna–San José, ~£6, 2.5–3 hrs

🛏Hostel private room or simple guesthouse, San José (~£18–25/night)

  • →Morning coffee and volcano views
  • →Public bus to San José
  • →Barrio Escalante dinner and drinks
~£50
Day 8

San José — last morning and departure

San José

Breakfast at the hostel or a local café, then a final wander — the gardens around the National Museum, the Spirogyra butterfly garden or the artisan stalls at Plaza de la Cultura if you have time. Allow 45–60 minutes for the airport bus or taxi before your flight. Costa Rica's departure tax is normally included in airfares; check your ticket. Pura vida.

🚌City bus or taxi to SJO airport, ~£2–20 depending on mode

🛏None (departure day)

  • →Morning stroll through San José parks and markets
  • →Last souvenir shopping at Plaza de la Cultura
~£30

Frequently asked questions

How much does Costa Rica Nature Explorer — Self-Launched 8-Day Version cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £421 per person for 8 days in Costa Rica. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Bamba Travel?+

Yes — Bamba Travel charges around £975 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £421 — a saving of roughly £554 (57%) per person.

How long is the Costa Rica trip?+

This itinerary runs 8 days, covering 8 day-by-day stops through Costa Rica.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, wildlife, beaches trip through Costa Rica, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
