£840saved per person (45%)

No-markup version: ~£1,010 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

A self-launched version of G Adventures' "Costa Rica Quest — Plus": the same loop from San José through Sarapiquí, Arenal/La Fortuna, the Monteverde cloud forest and Manuel Antonio's Pacific beaches — built for one traveller booking their own hostel beds, shuttle vans and day tours. You'll still do the coffee co-op visit, the hot springs soak, a cloud forest night walk, a canopy/waterfall day and a Manuel Antonio park day, but you arrange each one yourself through GetYourGuide/Klook or directly with local operators, and use shared tourist shuttles instead of a private group vehicle. Costs are approximate backpacker rates in GBP.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive San José

San José

Land at Juan Santamaría (SJO) or Tobías Bolaños (SYQ) and take an official airport taxi or Uber (~£20-25) or the Tuasa/Mepe bus if arriving at SJO's domestic side (~£1) into the city. Base yourself in Barrio Amón or Barrio Escalante for cheap eats and walkability. Get a Kolbi/Movistar SIM or eSIM (~£5-10), change money at a bank (better rates than the airport), and use the evening to scope out the Mercado Central and a casado dinner. Book your onward shared shuttle to La Fortuna for tomorrow morning tonight — Hostelworld/Getyourguide or Anywhere.com are the usual ways.

🚌Airport taxi/Uber ~£20-25, or public bus ~£1

🛏Hostel dorm in Barrio Amón/Escalante (e.g. Selina San José or Hostel Pangea), ~£12-15/night

  • →Barrio Amón / Barrio Escalante wander
  • →Mercado Central food stalls
  • →Buy local SIM and set up onward shuttle bookings
~£55
Day 2

San José → Sarapiquí coffee co-op → La Fortuna (hot springs)

La Fortuna / Arenal

Same route as the group tour but on a scheduled shuttle. Take an Interbus/Anywhere shared tourist shuttle San José → La Fortuna with a stop at the Sarapiquí area (roughly 4-5 hrs total, ~£35-45). Ask the shuttle company to drop you at San Miguel de Sarapiquí so you can do the Mi Cafecito coffee cooperative tour on your own (~£15, includes tasting) — book direct with the co-op. Continue to La Fortuna, check into a hostel, then walk or taxi (~£4) to the free/public hot springs river (El Chollín area) or pay ~£12-18 for a proper thermal resort such as Baldí or Ecotermales for an evening soak. Cheap dinner at a local soda.

🚌Shared tourist shuttle San José → La Fortuna, ~£40

🛏Hostel dorm in La Fortuna (e.g. Arenal Backpackers Resort or Selina La Fortuna), ~£14-18/night

  • →Mi Cafecito coffee cooperative tour (book direct)

  • →La Fortuna town evening
~£110
Day 3

Arenal adventure day — canyoning, zipline & waterfall

La Fortuna / Arenal

Full free day to replicate the tour's optional adrenaline bundle. Book a Lost Canyon canyoning/waterfall-rappel tour direct or via GetYourGuide/Klook (~£75-90 with the IVA tax included) and pair it with a canopy zipline (Arenal Mundo Aventura or Sky Adventures, ~£45-60, includes the long 137m+ lines) — or save money by doing just one. Afterwards, walk the free trail to La Fortuna Waterfall's public entrance viewpoint or pay the ~£16 entry to swim at the base. Evening: optional Arenal Volcano night lava-view trail (~£20) if it's clear.

🚌Local taxi or tour pickup for activities, ~£5-10

🛏Hostel dorm in La Fortuna, ~£14-18/night

Day 4

La Fortuna → Monteverde via Lake Arenal (jeep-boat-jeep)

Monteverde / Santa Elena

Take the classic jeep-boat-jeep crossing: a van to Lake Arenal, a boat across, then a van up to Santa Elena (~£25-35, 3.5-4 hrs, bookable through any La Fortuna hostel or GetYourGuide). This replaces the operator's private vehicle and is arguably more scenic. Settle into a Santa Elena hostel, then join the included-on-tour equivalent: the guided Cloud Forest Night Walk in the Santa Elena/Monteverde reserve (~£18-25, book direct with the reserve or hostel). Bring a poncho — it's called a cloud forest for a reason.

🚌Jeep-boat-jeep La Fortuna → Monteverde, ~£30

🛏Hostel dorm in Santa Elena (e.g. Pension Santa Elena or Selina Monteverde), ~£14-18/night

  • →Lake Arenal jeep-boat-jeep crossing
  • →Guided cloud forest night walk
~£95
Day 5

Monteverde cloud forest day

Monteverde / Santa Elena

Do the daytime Monteverde/Santa Elena Cloud Forest guided tour independently (~£20-28 with an entry-fee-inclusive package, book direct with Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve or a local guide collective). Pre-book timed entry online in high season — the reserve caps numbers. Optional add-ons: the hanging bridges walk (~£18) or the Monteverde zipline if you skipped Arenal. Afternoon: the free-to-cheap Monteverde cheese factory tour and a coffee/chocolate tour (~£18) if you want more of the local food scene.

🚌Local buses/taxis to reserve entrance, ~£4

🛏Hostel dorm in Santa Elena, ~£14-18/night

  • →Mont everde Cloud Forest Reserve guided walk
  • →Optional hanging bridges
  • →Optional coffee & chocolate tour
~£85
Day 6

Monteverde → Manuel Antonio

Manuel Antonio / Quepos

Travel day: an Interbus/Anywhere shared shuttle from Monteverde to Manuel Antonio takes roughly 4-5 hrs (~£40-50). Alternatively, cheaper but slower public bus via San José or Puntarenas (~£10-15, 6-8 hrs) if you're watching the budget. Check into a Quepos or Manuel Antonio hostel, then hit the beach at the national park entrance area for sunset and seafood dinner in Quepos (~£6-9).

🚌Shared shuttle Monteverde → Manuel Antonio, ~£45 (or public bus ~£12)

🛏Hostel dorm in Quepos/Manuel Antonio (e.g. Hostel Plinio or Selina Manuel Antonio), ~£14-18/night

  • →Travel to the Pacific coast
  • →Manuel Antonio beach sunset
~£85
Day 7

Manuel Antonio National Park & catamaran sunset

Manuel Antonio

Book a timed-entry ticket to Manuel Antonio National Park online in advance (~£16) — daily visitor numbers are capped, and in high season it sells out. Join a small-group guide (~£25) for a far better chance of spotting sloths, howler monkeys and toucans on the rainforest trails, then relax on Playa Manuel Antonio. In the afternoon, replicate the tour's Pacific catamaran: book a sunset catamaran cruise with snorkelling direct or via GetYourGuide (~£70-85 incl. lunch/drinks) — or save money with a kayak/mangrove tour (~£35).

🚌Local bus Quepos ↔ park entrance ~£1, taxis ~£4

🛏Hostel dorm in Quepos/Manuel Antonio, ~£14-18/night

  • →Manuel Antonio National Park guided walk
  • →Beach time at Playa Manuel Antonio
  • →Sunset catamaran cruise with snorkelling
~£175
Day 8

Manuel Antonio → San José

San José

Take the shared shuttle or direct bus back to San José (Interbus ~£40-45, 3.5-4 hrs; public Tracopa bus ~£8-10, 4-5 hrs). Check back into a San José hostel, then spend the afternoon exploring: Pre-Columbian Gold Museum or Jade Museum (~£11 each), the National Theatre, or a craft beer in Barrio Escalante. Last-night dinner and pack for the flight.

🚌Shared shuttle Manuel Antonio → San José, ~£42 (or Tracopa bus ~£9)

🛏Hostel dorm in San José, ~£12-15/night

  • →Return to San José
  • →Pre-Columbian Gold Museum or Jade Museum
  • →Barrio Escalante evening
~£75
Day 9

Depart San José

San José

Depart any time. Take an airport taxi or Uber (~£20-25) or the public bus to SJO. If your flight is late, left-luggage at the hostel (~£3) lets you do a final café crawl before heading out.

🚌Airport taxi/Uber ~£22

Frequently asked questions

How much does Costa Rica Quest — Self-Launched (San José to San José, 9 Days) cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £1,010 per person for 9 days in Costa Rica. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+

Yes — G Adventures charges around £1,850 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £1,010 — a saving of roughly £840 (45%) per person.

How long is the Costa Rica trip?+

This itinerary runs 9 days, covering 9 day-by-day stops through Costa Rica.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, culture, wildlife trip through Costa Rica, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
