No-markup version: ~£491 per person

A 13-day backpacker route from San José to Panama City hitting the Caribbean surf town of Puerto Viejo, the starfish-filled archipelago of Bocas del Toro, cloud-forest Boquete and the volcano-crater town of Valle de Antón. Every element of the G Adventures version — hostel beds, public buses, shared shuttles, boat crossings and locally booked activities — can be arranged yourself for roughly a third of the tour price, with the same flexibility to surf, hike, snorkel and chase waterfalls as you go.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive San José

San José, Costa Rica

Land at Juan Santamaría or Tobías Bolaños airport and take an official orange airport taxi or Uber into the centre (~£8–12). Check into a hostel in Barrio Amón or near Avenida Central — Hostel Bekuo and Selina San José are both reliable solo-traveller options. Spend the afternoon wandering the National Museum or the Mercado Central for a cheap casado lunch, and pick up a pre-loaded Costa Rican SIM/eSIM. Book your Puerto Viejo bus ticket for tomorrow at the hostel desk or online with Transportes Mepe.

🚌Airport taxi to city centre (~£10)

🛏Hostel dorm, central San José (~£12/night)

  • →Self-guided walk of Barrio Amón and Avenida Central
  • →Mercado Central food stalls
~£45
Day 2

Local bus to Puerto Viejo de Talamanca

Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, Costa Rica

Take the Transportes Mepe bus from San José's Terminal del Caribe to Puerto Viejo (~4.5 hrs, ~£7). The town is a laid-back Caribbean stretch of white and black sand beaches with reggae bars and great cheap food. Do your own orientation stroll — the main road runs straight along the coast. Afternoon swim at Playa Negra (black sand, 15 min walk) and dinner at a soda (small local eatery) for gallo pinto and fresh fish (~£5).

🚌Public bus San José → Puerto Viejo (~£7)

🛏Beach hostel dorm, Puerto Viejo (~£14/night)

  • →Playa Negra black-sand beach
  • →Sunset walk along the coastal road

Day 3

Bike the beaches, surf lesson

Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, Costa Rica

Rent a beach cruiser from any of the rental stands on the main road (~£7/day) and ride south to Playa Cocles, Punta Uva and — if your legs hold out — Manzanillo, a 14 km stretch of coastline through jungle. Book a beginner surf lesson at Playa Cocles directly with one of the beach schools (~£45–55 for 2 hrs including board), or just hire a board for £10 and paddle out. Stop at a Punta Uva beach shack for a coconut and ceviche. Evening: reggae and calypso bars in town.

🚌Bicycle hire (~£7)

🛏Beach hostel dorm, Puerto Viejo (~£14/night)

  • →Bike ride to Cocles, Punta Uva and Manzanillo

Day 4

Cross the border to Bocas del Toro

Bocas del Toro, Panama

Take a shared shuttle from Puerto Viejo to the Sixaola/Guabito border (~1 hr, ~£8), walk across the rickety border bridge, clear immigration, then join a local bus or collectivo from Guabito to Changuinola and onwards to Almirante (~£6). From Almirante the water taxi to Bocas town is ~30 min (~£5). Total travel day ~6 hrs. Wander Bocas town in the evening — Afro-Caribbean culture, guari-guari language, reggae on every corner — and grab a cheap plate of rice and beans.

🛏Hostel dorm in Bocas town (~£14/night)

  • →Walk across the Sixaola/Guabito border

Day 5

Free day in Bocas — snorkel and paddle

Bocas del Toro, Panama

Pick your own adventure. Cheap options: hire a paddleboard or kayak off Bocas town (~£8–12/hr), or join a sunset snorkelling boat trip (~£20) to reef spots around the archipelago. In the evening, book a bioluminescence tour into a mangrove lagoon (~£20) — a genuinely magical, pitch-black paddle with glowing plankton. Budget a lazy hammock afternoon if that's more your speed.

🚌Walking / short water taxi rides

🛏Hostel dorm in Bocas town (~£14/night)

  • →Sunset snorkelling boat trip (~£20)
  • →Bioluminescence tour (~£20)

Day 6

Starfish Beach day trip

Bocas del Toro, Panama

Take a shared water taxi from Bocas town to Isla Colón's Playa Estrella / Starfish Beach (~£8–10 return, arrange with any boatman at the dock). The calm shallow cove is full of starfish — look, don't lift. Spend the day swimming, eating fried fish at a beach shack, and lounging. Boat back mid-afternoon, then a group-style night out on Bocas' main street (Barco Hundido is the classic backpacker bar).

🚌Shared water taxi to Starfish Beach (~£9 return)

🛏Hostel dorm in Bocas town (~£14/night)

  • →Starfish Beach / Playa Estrella
  • →Bocas town nightlife

Day 7

To the mainland and up to Boquete

Boquete, Panama

Water taxi back to Almirante (~£5), then a local bus or shared shuttle to David (~£5) and onward to Boquete (~£4). En route, stop at a Ngäbe indigenous community cacao farm near Almirante or Changuinola for a bean-to-bar chocolate workshop — these can be arranged directly through Boquete hostels or the Almirante tour offices for ~£15–20. Arrive Boquete in the cooler highlands and settle in; the town is a hub for coffee and cloud-forest hikes.

🛏Hostel dorm in Boquete (~£15/night)

  • →Ngäbe community cacao / chocolate experience (~£18)

Day 8

Waterfalls and cloud forest

Boquete, Panama

Pick a hike. The Lost Waterfalls trail (three waterfalls, muddy but brilliant, ~£8 entry plus £8 transport to the trailhead) is the classic. Alternatively hike the Pipeline Trail in the cloud forest (~£6 entry plus transport) for quetzal-spotting. Book direct with Boquete Tree Trek or any local guide. If you want adrenaline instead, whitewater rafting on the Chiriquí Viejo is ~£55 with a local operator. Evening casado dinner in town (~£6).

Day 9

Coffee farm and more trails

Boquete, Panama

Book a coffee plantation tour directly with Café Ruiz or Finca Lerida (~£25, 2–3 hrs) — Boquete's Geisha coffee is world-famous and the farm tours are excellent. Afternoon: rent a bike (~£8) and ride the valley roads, or take a local taxi up to the hot springs. If you still have energy, hike the Sendero de los Quetzales section. Cheap dinner in town, early night before a long travel day.

Travel from Boquete to David by local bus (~£4), then a long coach or shared shuttle to Penonomé or Panama City and a local bus up to Valle de Antón (~£18–22 total, 7–8 hrs). Valle de Antón sits inside the crater of an extinct volcano — cooler, greener, and full of trails. Settle into a guesthouse and grab dinner in town.

🛏Guesthouse/hostel in Valle de Antón (~£16/night)

Valle de Antón, Panama

Walk up Cerro Gaital (1,185 m) — a steep, muddy, jungle-clad summit trail with huge views over the crater (~£3 entry, 4–5 hrs return, start early before the clouds). Alternative: rent a mountain bike (~£10) and ride the valley roads, or walk to the Pozos Termales hot springs (~£5 entry) to soak. In the afternoon look for toucans and sloths along the quiet lanes. Dinner at a local fonda.

Spend the late afternoon walking Casco Viejo yourself — Plaza de la Independencia, the Panama Cathedral, the coastal promenade — then take an Uber to the Amador Causeway for sunset over the skyline. Frequently asked questions

How much does Costa Rica to Panama: Surf, Treks & Starry Skies — Self-Launched cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £491 per person for 13 days in Costa Rica & Panama. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+

Yes — G Adventures charges around £833 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £491 — a saving of roughly £342 (41%) per person.

How long is the Costa Rica & Panama trip?+

This itinerary runs 13 days, covering 13 day-by-day stops through Costa Rica & Panama.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, backpacker, beaches trip through Costa Rica & Panama, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
