G Adventures charges £1,249

£594saved per person (48%)

No-markup version: ~£655 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

An 8-day independent version of G Adventures' Havana–Viñales–Playa Larga–Trinidad loop, done DIY with casas particulares, Viazul/local buses and shared taxis. You'll walk Old Havana on your own map, ride out to a Viñales tobacco vega, swim at the Bay of Pigs and Cayo Levisa, take a salsa class in Trinidad, and eat at paladares — for roughly half the group-tour price. Costs are approximate and based on current backpacker rates; note Cuba runs on cash (bring euros or CAD to change) and prices shift fast.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Havana — arrive, mojitos, live music

Havana

Land at José Martí Airport and take a shared taxi or the local bus into Centro Habana (~£5 shared taxi, ~£1 bus). Check into a casita particular booked ahead via Airbnb or Hostelworld-style listings (~£16-20/night). Get cash sorted early (Cadeca exchange houses in Vedado/Centro), then wander the Malecón at sunset. Evening: find live son/trova music at a casa de la música or a bar in Centro — entry is usually £2-6 with a drink minimum, and mojitos run £3-4.

Late morning take a Viazul bus from the Havana terminal to Viñales (~£9, 3-3.5 hrs) or arrange a shared colectivo (~£12). En route the landscape turns to tobacco and sugarcane country. Settle into a Viñales casa (~£12-14), then hire a local guide or just walk to a working tobacco vega (entry/tour ~£5-8) to see how cigars are rolled — buy a couple direct from the farmer for a fraction of city prices.

Alternatives: hike the Valle de Viñales with a local guide (~£12) past mogotes and the Mural de la Prehistoria, or tour the Cueva del Indio (~£6). Eat at a paladar in town — lobster or ropa vieja for £6-10.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Cuban Rhythms: Rum & Fun — Self-Launched cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £655 per person for 8 days in Cuba. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+

Yes — G Adventures charges around £1,249 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £655 — a saving of roughly £594 (48%) per person.

How long is the Cuba trip?+

This itinerary runs 8 days, covering 8 day-by-day stops through Cuba.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a backpacker, culture, budget trip through Cuba, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
