An 8-day self-launched loop from Havana through Viñales, the Bay of Pigs, Cienfuegos and Trinidad — the same casas particulares, tobacco farms, salsa floors and Caribbean beaches as the G Adventures 'Cuban Rhythms' small-group tour, but booked yourself. You'll ride Viazul coaches and shared taxis instead of a private minibus, arrange your own casa hosts (your best local fixers), and take self-bookable salsa classes and snorkelling trips in each town. Cuba is a cash economy — bring enough EUR/GBP to cover the whole trip, as cards and ATMs are unreliable.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Havana — mojitos and live music

Havana

Fly into José Martí International (HAV) and take a pre-arranged airport taxi or a shared taxi into Centro/Vedado (~£15-25). Check into a pre-booked casa particular (~£15-20/night, breakfast usually £4-5 extra). Spend the evening easing in: walk the Malecón at sunset, then find live son/trova music at a bar in Centro Habana or Vedado and toast with a mojito (£3-5). Buy your Viazul bus ticket to Viñales now at the station or online so Day 2 is locked in.

Day 2

Old Havana walking tour, then bus to Viñales

Havana → Viñales

Do a self-launched Old Havana walking loop in the morning: Plaza de la Catedral, Plaza Vieja, Calle Obispo and the Malecón. Book a free-walking-tour-style local guide through your casa host or a Havana walking-tour operator (~£8-12 tip-based) if you want context. Midday, take the Viazul coach Havana–Viñales (~4 hrs, ~£10-12). In Viñales, check into a casa in the village; your host can arrange the afternoon tobacco-farm visit. Walk to a 'vega' to see how Cuban cigars are rolled and sample a fresh one (~£8-10 including a guide/rolling demo). Evening: cheap paladar dinner and a rooftop rum.

Day 3

Viñales valley — Cayo Jutías or Cayo Levisa beach day

Viñales

Day trip to a white-sand cay. Cayo Jutías is the cheaper, more independent option — shared taxi/collectivo from Viñales (~£10-15 return, ~45 min) with a small entry fee; Cayo Levisa needs a boat from Palma Rubia (~£20-25 return including boat and taxi). Bring snorkel gear or hire on the cay (~£5) and a packed lunch, as food on the cays is pricey. Alternatively stay local: hire a bike (~£5/day) to ride the Valle de Viñales, the Mural de la Prehistoria and the Cueva del Indio. Back in town, dinner at a paladar (~£8).

Bay of Pigs swim and on to Playa Larga

Viñales → Playa Larga

Break the journey at the Bay of Pigs for a swim in the clear blue water and optional snorkelling off Playa Girón/Cueva de los Peces (~£8-10 with gear). Stay in a Playa Larga casa (very friendly, cheap lobster dinners ~£10). Evening is slow: beach walk, rum, and an early night before the long transfer tomorrow.

🛏Casa particular, Playa Larga (~£15)

Cienfuegos stopover and Trinidad orientation

Continue by Viazul/shared taxi to Trinidad (~1.5 hrs, ~£6-8). Check into a casa in the cobbled centre (~£15-18); do your own orientation walk around Plaza Mayor, the Iglesia de la Santísima Trinidad and the steps of La Escalinata. In the evening, book a salsa lesson at a local casa de la música or dance school (~£8-12/hr) and then hit Casa de la Música for live bands (£3-5 entry).

Day 6

Trinidad beach, valley and a host dinner

Trinidad

Free day. Take a shared taxi or the local beach bus to Playa Ancón (~£6-8 return) for a lazy Caribbean morning, or snorkel/dive with a local dive shop (~£25-35 for a two-tank dive). Alternatively hike or horse-ride into the Valle de los Ingenios to the Manaca Iznaga tower and textiles/embroidery stalls (~£15-20 with a local guide) — the same community project G Adventures supports, just visited independently. Back in town, arrange a home-cooked dinner at your casa or a neighbour's house (~£10-12) and a final night of music.

🚌Shared taxi/beach bus to Playa Ancón (~£7)

🛏Casa particular, Trinidad (~£17)

Santa Clara and back to Havana

Trinidad → Santa Clara → Havana

Take an early Viazul/shared taxi Trinidad–Santa Clara (~1.5 hrs, ~£6-8) and visit the Che Guevara mausoleum and museum (free entry, small camera fee) plus the Tren Blindado monument. Then continue Santa Clara–Havana by Viazul (~4 hrs, ~£12). Check into a Havana casa for the final night, take a short self-guided Old Havana wander around the Plaza de Armas and cathedral, and finish with dinner at a paladar and a night out in Vedado. Note: Havana–Santa Clara–Trinidad connections can sell out — book the day before.

Change any remaining CUP at a CADECA before the airport (queues are long there), and remember it's illegal to take CUP out of the country. Frequently asked questions

How much does Cuban Rhythms: Self-Launched Beachfronts & Havana Vibes cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £442 per person for 8 days in Cuba. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+

Yes — G Adventures charges around £1,200 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £442 — a saving of roughly £758 (63%) per person.

How long is the Cuba trip?+

This itinerary runs 8 days, covering 8 day-by-day stops through Cuba.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a culture, beaches, backpacker trip through Cuba, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
