No-markup version: ~£315 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

A self-launched version of the classic 4-day Cuyabeno Reserve lodge programme. Instead of booking through an operator, you book a jungle eco-lodge directly (or via a Cuyabeno-focused local agency), arrange your own overnight bus or short flight from Quito to the Cuyabeno Bridge / Lago Agrio, and join the lodge's own scheduled canoe excursions — the same Laguna Grande sunsets, caiman-spotting night paddles, rainforest hikes and Siona community visit are all included in the lodge's standard package. Lodges in Cuyabeno run fixed departure days (typically Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday), so plan your dates around those. Costs below are approximate per-person estimates and exclude international flights; the main saving comes from booking the lodge direct rather than paying an agency markup and optional extra shuttles.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Quito → Cuyabeno Bridge → Laguna Grande sunset

Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve

Travel overnight from Quito or arrive from Lago Agrio/Coca in the morning and be at the Puente de Cuyabeno (Cuyabeno Bridge) by 10:30am — this is the fixed meeting point for all reserve lodges. From Quito the cheapest option is the overnight bus to Lago Agrio (~9–10 hrs, £10–14) then a shared taxi/pickup to the bridge (~1 hr, £5–8); alternatively a short flight Quito–Lago Agrio or Quito–Coca (£50–70) plus a 1–1.5 hr road transfer. Pay your reserve entrance fee at the bridge (approx. $5–10) and board the shared motorized canoe upriver to your lodge (~2.5 hrs). After lunch, paddle by dugout canoe to Laguna Grande for swimming at sunset, then head out after dark with a torch to spot caiman and nocturnal wildlife.

🚌Overnight bus Quito–Lago Agrio (~£10–14) + shared transfer to Cuyabeno Bridge (~£5–8) + lodge motorized canoe (~£15–20 share, usually bundled into lodge package)

🛏Cuyabeno eco-lodge, shared/dorm or simple double room booked direct (e.g. Guacamayo Ecolodge, Dolphin Lodge, Siona Lodge or similar)

  • →Motorized canoe upriver to lodge
  • →Laguna Grande sunset swim
  • →Night canoe for caiman and nocturnal wildlife
~£85
Day 2

Dawn wildlife, rainforest hike and medicinal plants

Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve

Early start — most lodges send guides out at first light when wildlife is most active. Take a guided rainforest hike or canoe excursion (the guide picks based on water levels and wildlife conditions) looking for monkeys, hoatzins, pink river dolphins and toucans. Mid-morning, join the lodge naturalist's medicinal plants walk to learn about the reserve's plant pharmacy. Lunch back at the lodge, then a slower afternoon canoe excursion along the Cuyabeno River for birdwatching and wildlife observation. Evening meal at the lodge; many lodges offer a night walk or extra caiman-spotting paddle for a small supplement.

🚌No road transport — all excursions by lodge dugout canoe, included

🛏Same Cuyabeno eco-lodge (all meals included in lodge rate)

Day 3

Siona community, cassava bread and jungle night walk

Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve

Optional pre-dawn birdwatching canoe ride for early risers (usually ~£15–20 extra, book with your guide the night before). After breakfast, canoe to a Siona indigenous community for a cultural visit — learn about traditional life in the reserve, help prepare cassava (yuca) bread and share a traditional lunch with a Siona family. In the afternoon, take a guided jungle nature walk focused on insects, spiders, tree frogs and plant life. Dinner at the lodge and an early night before departure day.

🚌Canoe transfers to Siona community, included with lodge programme

🛏Same Cuyabeno eco-lodge (all meals included in lodge rate)

Day 4

Farewell canoe and return to the bridge

Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve → Cuyabeno Bridge

Final early-morning canoe ride through the reserve while the mist is still on the water, then breakfast and a box lunch for the journey. Board the shared motorized canoe back downriver to the Cuyabeno Bridge (~2.5 hrs), arriving around 10:30–11:00am. From here continue by shared pickup/shuttle to Lago Agrio (~£5–8) and take an afternoon or overnight bus back to Quito (~£10–14) — expect to reach Quito late evening (around 22:00–23:00). Don't book an onward flight the same morning; if you're flying home, allow a night in Quito or Lago Agrio.

🚌Lodge motorized canoe to Cuyabeno Bridge (included) + shared transfer to Lago Agrio (~£5–8) + bus Lago Agrio–Quito (~£10–14)

🛏Not included — budget hostel in Quito if needed (~£10–15)

Frequently asked questions

How much does 4 Days Cuyabeno Amazon Lodge – Self-Launched cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £315 per person for 4 days in Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve, Ecuadorian Amazon. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Responsible Travel South America?+

Yes — Responsible Travel South America charges around £385 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £315 — a saving of roughly £70 (18%) per person.

How long is the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve, Ecuadorian Amazon trip?+

This itinerary runs 4 days, covering 4 day-by-day stops through Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve, Ecuadorian Amazon.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, wildlife, backpacker trip through Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve, Ecuadorian Amazon, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
