Czech Republic and Poland Highlights – Self-Launched Edition (Prague to Warsaw)

10 days · Czech Republic & Poland

Europamundo charges £915

£35saved per person (4%)

No-markup version: ~£880 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

A self-launched version of Europamundo's coach tour from Prague to Warsaw, rebuilt for independent travellers. Same route — Prague, Brno, Bratislava, Trencin, Krakow, Auschwitz, Katowice, Opole, Wroclaw, Poznan and Torun — but using cheap intercity buses and trains instead of a coach convoy, hostel and budget-guesthouse beds instead of 4-star chain hotels, and self-bookable walking tours, Auschwitz-Birkenau tickets and canal cruises. Expect fast-paced days with 2 nights in Prague and Krakow, one night in most stopover cities, and a lot of time on the road: this is a highlights sampler, so build in buffer time and don't feel obliged to tick every stop. All costs are rough backpacker-level estimates in GBP and exclude flights to/from Europe.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive in Prague

Prague

Land or arrive by bus/train into Prague and check into a hostel in Vinohrady or Zizkov (both ~15-20 min walk/2 tram stops from the Old Town, but cheaper than Stare Mesto). Pick up a 72-hour Prague public transport pass (~£11) at the airport or main station if you'll be moving around a lot. Spend the late afternoon wandering the Old Town Square and over Charles Bridge at golden hour, then eat at a cheap Czech pub (hospoda) — svickova or gulas with dumplings for around £8-10. Book your Prague Castle entry ticket online in advance if you want to skip the queue tomorrow.

🚌Public transport from airport: bus 119 + metro A (~£1.20) or Airport Express bus (~£2.50)

🛏Hostel dorm in Vinohrady/Zizkov (~£15)

  • →Old Town Square orientation walk
  • →Charles Bridge at sunset
  • →Cheap Czech pub dinner

Day 2

Prague Castle and Old Town

Prague

Do the sightseeing loop independently instead of the coach panoramic tour. Walk up through Nerudova Street to Prague Castle (circuit ticket ~£12-13 direct from hrad.cz, cheaper than agency tours), see St Vitus Cathedral, Golden Lane and the castle gardens. Come down via the Strahov Monastery and Petrin Hill for the view. In the afternoon take a free walking tour of the Old Town (tip-based, ~£5-8 tip) covering the Astronomical Clock, Town Hall Square and the Jewish Quarter, or book a comparable small-group Old Town tour on GetYourGuide for ~£12-15. Evening: beer at a Vinohrady pivnice (~£2 a half-litre).

🚌Walking plus tram tickets (~£2)

🛏Hostel dorm in Vinohrady/Zizkov (~£15)

  • →Prague Castle circuit ticket
  • →Free/tip-based Old Town walking tour
  • →Petrin Hill viewpoint

Day 3

Prague to Brno

Brno

Take a morning RegioJet or FlixBus from Prague to Brno (2h 30m, ~£7-10, book a day or two ahead). Dump your bag at a hostel near the station and walk the compact centre: the Cathedral of St Peter and Paul on Petrov Hill, the Old Town Hall with its crooked legend-crocodile, the Vegetable Market and Spilberk Castle park. Brno is an excellent, underrated cheap city — dinner and a beer in the centre for under £10. Note there is no need for a coach; buses run hourly.

🚌RegioJet/FlixBus Prague–Brno ~£8

🛏Budget hostel or private room, Brno centre (~£20)

  • →Spilberk Castle and park
  • →Cathedral of St Peter and Paul
  • →Old Town Hall and Vegetable Market
~£52
Day 4

Brno to Bratislava to Trencin to Krakow

Krakow

A long travel day, mirroring the original coach route. Take an early bus Brno–Bratislava (2h, ~£7). Drop bags at the station lockers, walk 20 minutes to Bratislava Castle for the views over the Danube and the UFO bridge, and grab a cheap lunch (bryndzove halusky, ~£6). Then take a train or bus Bratislava–Trencin (1h 30m, ~£5) for a quick stroll around Trencin Castle's old town (or skip Trencin and go direct if you're behind schedule). Finish with a coach or train Trencin–Krakow via Zilina (roughly 5-6h, ~£15-20). It's a big day — book accommodation near Krakow Glowny so you can fall out of the station into bed.

🚌Brno–Bratislava bus ~£7; Bratislava–Trencin ~£5; Trencin–Krakow ~£18

🛏Hostel near Krakow Glowny (~£16)

  • →Bratislava Castle viewpoint
  • →Trencin Castle old town walk

Day 5

Krakow Old Town and Wawel

Krakow

Self-guided morning on the Royal Route: Florianska Gate, Market Square with St Mary's Basilica (the trumpet call on the hour), then up Wawel Hill for the cathedral and castle courtyards (free to walk; state rooms ~£10-12 if you want them). Join a tip-based walking tour of Kazimierz in the afternoon (~£6 tip) to cover the Jewish heritage you'd otherwise pay a guide for. Overnight in Krakow — no need for the tour's included dinner; head to a milk bar (bar mleczny) instead for a full plate of pierogi for £5-7.

🚌Walking or tram (~£2)

🛏Hostel near Krakow Glowny (~£16)

  • →Royal Route and Market Square walk
  • →Wawel Hill and cathedral
  • →Kazimierz tip-based walking tour
~£45
Day 6

Auschwitz-Birkenau, Wadowice and Katowice

Katowice

Book your Auschwitz-Birkenau entry ticket directly at visit.auschwitz.org — the timed English guided entry is free-ish/very cheap (ranges from free to about £10-15 depending on booking type) and MUST be reserved weeks ahead; the reviews of the original tour mention long waits, which advance booking avoids. Take an early bus Krakow–Oswiecim (1h 30m, ~£4) or a shared van, do the 3.5-hour memorial visit, then continue to Wadowice for the Pope John Paul II basilica and museum house (museum ~£6) if you have energy — buses run Oswiecim–Wadowice–Katowice. Continue to Katowice by bus/train (~£4). Skip Kalwaria Zebrzydowska unless you're driving; it's awkward on public transport.

🚌Krakow–Oswiecim bus ~£4; Oswiecim–Wadowice–Katowice ~£6

🛏Budget hotel or hostel, Katowice centre (~£22)

  • →Auschwitz-Birkenau guided memorial visit (pre-booked)
  • →Wadowice John Paul II museum house
  • →Nikiszowiec district walk in Katowice
~£58
Day 7

Katowice to Opole to Wroclaw

Wroclaw

Train Katowice–Opole (1h, ~£4), storing your bag in the station lockers. Walk the Opole old town and, if you like folk architecture, the Village Museum (Muzeum Wsi Opolskiej, ~£4, reachable by local bus ~£1.50). Continue Opole–Wroclaw by train (1h 15m, ~£4). In Wroclaw, swap the coach canal cruise for the cheap public river ferry/tram or a self-hire pedal boat on the Odra (~£8) if weather allows, then hunt the city's gnome statues around the Market Square and Cathedral Island.

🚌Katowice–Opole train ~£4; Opole–Wroclaw train ~£4

🛏Hostel in Wroclaw Old Town (~£18)

  • →Opole old town and open-air Village Museum
  • →Wroclaw gnome hunt and Cathedral Island
  • →Optional pedal boat or canal cruise ~£8
~£52
Day 8

Wroclaw to Poznan to Torun to Warsaw

Warsaw

A rail-heavy day on the cheap EIP/IC services. Wroclaw–Poznan (~2h, ~£9), quick walk up to the Old Market Square with its colourful town hall and the goats, then Poznan–Torun (~1h 45m, ~£8). In Torun, spend two hours in the UNESCO medieval old town and optionally the Copernicus House museum (~£6). Finish Torun–Warsaw (~2h 15m, ~£10). If that feels too rushed, drop Poznan — the original tour barely stops there either. Sleep near Warsaw Centralna for convenience.

🚌Wroclaw–Poznan ~£9; Poznan–Torun ~£8; Torun–Warsaw ~£10

🛏Hostel near Warsaw Centralna (~£17)

  • →Poznan Old Market Square
  • →Torun UNESCO old town

~£62
Day 9

Warsaw city sights

Warsaw

Self-guided loop of the reconstructed Old Town, Royal Castle exterior, the Jewish Ghetto memorial and Umschlagplatz, then the Palace of Culture viewing terrace (30th floor, ~£6) and Lazienki Park with the Chopin Monument — free Chopin concerts run in the park on summer Sundays. In the afternoon, pre-book the POLIN Museum (~£9) or the Warsaw Rising Museum (~£8) online. Evening: a free/tip-based walking tour of Warsaw's history or a pierogi dinner in Praga for ~£7.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Czech Republic and Poland Highlights – Self-Launched Edition (Prague to Warsaw) cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £880 per person for 10 days in Czech Republic & Poland. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Europamundo?+

Yes — Europamundo charges around £915 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £880 — a saving of roughly £35 (4%) per person.

How long is the Czech Republic & Poland trip?+

This itinerary runs 10 days, covering 10 day-by-day stops through Czech Republic & Poland.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a culture, city-breaks, budget trip through Czech Republic & Poland, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
