Self-Launched Galápagos Wildlife Adventure: Quito to Quito

Self-Launched Galápagos Wildlife Adventure: Quito to Quito

8 days · Ecuador & Galápagos Islands

G Adventures charges £3,160

£2,170saved per person (69%)

No-markup version: ~£990 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

An 8-day self-launched version of G Adventures' "Journeys: Wildlife of the Galápagos Islands" (National Geographic Journeys, from $3,999 USD). You'll do the same route — colonial Quito and the equator line, then Santa Cruz and San Cristóbal islands with sea lions, giant tortoises, marine iguanas and snorkelling with turtles and reef sharks — booking everything yourself: cheap airport bus, local city walking tours, independently booked day boats, public speedboat ferries and hostel/guesthouse stays instead of the operator's upgraded hotels and private guides. Costs are rough backpacker estimates in GBP.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive in Quito

Quito, Ecuador

Land at Mariscal Sucre Airport (UIO) and get to the historic centre without a private transfer: the green Aeroservicios bus runs every ~30 mins to Río Coca terminal (~$2), from where a taxi or the Ecovía trolleybus completes the trip (~$2-4 total, 60-75 mins). Alternatively an airport taxi runs $25-30 — split it if you're travelling with others. Check into a hostel or family guesthouse in the Centro Histórico, buy a local SIM/eSIM and withdraw USD — Ecuador is cash-based for small purchases. Take it easy first evening; Quito sits at 2,850 m, so hydrate and go slow. Plenty of cheap eateries around Plaza Foch or La Ronda for dinner.

🚌Aeroservicios bus + taxi (~£3-4)

🛏Hostel/guesthouse, Centro Histórico (~£15-20 pn)

  • →Airport bus to city
  • →Historic centre evening wander
  • →Acclimatisation
~£40
Day 2

Quito old town, chocolate and the equator line

Quito, Ecuador

Do-it-yourself version of the operator's Quito city tour. Join a free (tip-based, £4-8) walking tour of the Centro Histórico covering Plaza Grande, the gold-leaf interior of La Compañía de Jesús and San Francisco Plaza — or pay ~$10 for a small-group guided tour booked online. Book a cacao-and-chocolate tasting directly with one of the old-town chocolate shops (e.g. Chez Tiff or Yumbos Chocolate, $10-15). In the afternoon take a taxi ($5-8) or the bus to the Mitad del Mundo / Intiñan Museum area (~$15 entry) for the equator-line experiments. Evening: rooftop terrace beer or street food in La Ronda.

🚌Walking + taxi to Mitad del Mundo (~£8)

🛏Hostel/guesthouse, Centro Histórico (~£15-20 pn)

  • →Old town walking tour
  • →Cacao & chocolate tasting
  • →Intiñan Museum at the equator line

Day 3

Fly to Baltra and on to Santa Cruz Island

Santa Cruz Island, Galápagos

Book a morning flight Quito–Baltra (GPS) yourself online in advance — LATAM, Avianca and JetBlue all serve it, roughly $250-380 return depending on season; allow 23 kg checked luggage. At Quito airport pay the $20 transit control card and on arrival at Baltra pay the $200 national park entry fee in CASH. These are the same fees the group tour excludes. Then follow the standard independent route: free airline bus to the Itabaca Channel, the public ferry/water taxi across (~$1), then a $5 bus or $25 shared taxi into Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz. Check into a Puerto Ayora hostel/guesthouse near the harbour, buy a snorkel mask rental setup (~$5-10/day) and explore the town, fish market (pelicans and sea lions steal scraps) and pier. Instead of the operator's organic farm lunch, join a half-day farm/finca visit booked directly with a local operator, or simply eat at a cheap town comedor.

🚌Flight (~£230-300 share of return) + ferry + bus (~£6)

🛏Hostel/guesthouse, Puerto Ayora (~£18-25 pn)

  • →Domestic flight to Baltra

Uninhabited island day boat with snorkelling

Santa Cruz Island, Galápagos

Recreate the tour's full-day boat excursion by booking directly with a Puerto Ayora operator (or via GetYourGuide) for a day trip to Bartolomé, North Seymour, South Plaza or Santa Fé — typically $150-200 including lunch, guide and gear. Book a day or two ahead at the waterfront tour offices; availability rotates by National Park permits. Hike the island trails — sea lion colonies, blue-footed boobies, frigatebirds, land iguanas and lava landscapes — then snorkel from the boat with sea turtles, rays, tropical fish and reef sharks. Return to Puerto Ayora in the late afternoon for cheap seafood at the dockside kiosks or a local ceviche place.

Santa Cruz Island, Galápagos

Walk the signed 2.5 km trail from town to Tortuga Bay (~45 mins, free) for white sand, marine iguanas and pelicans — go early before the heat, bring water and snorkel gear. Walk back for a cheap lunch, then visit the Charles Darwin Research Station and Fausto Llerena giant tortoise breeding centre on your own (entry by donation/small fee, ~$5-10) to see tortoises up close and the Lonesome George exhibit. Late afternoon and evening free: swim at Playa de los Alemanes or have a beer at the harbour before an early night.

Speedboat to San Cristóbal Island

San Cristóbal Island, Galápagos

Take the public inter-island speedboat Puerto Ayora–Puerto Baquerizo Moreno (~2 hrs, $30-35 one way; book at the harbour the day before, seasickness tablets recommended). On arrival, check into a guesthouse and walk to the Interpretation Center (free entry) to learn the archipelago's natural and human history. Then hike the trail up to the Tijeretas viewpoint (Mirador Cerro Tijeretas) — about 30 mins uphill — for frigatebird colonies and ocean views, continuing to Playa Mann and Punta Carola where sea lions nap on the sand. Sunset over the harbour with the fishing fleet coming in.

Free day on San Cristóbal — Kicker Rock or the 360 tour

San Cristóbal Island, Galápagos

Self-book the operator's optional extras: either a boat trip to Kicker Rock (León Dormido) to snorkel with sea turtles, rays, reef sharks and hammerheads ($130-170 with local dive shops, booked the day before), or the San Cristóbal 360 boat tour around secluded bays ($120-150). Cheaper alternative: stay close to town — walk to La Lobería beach (25 mins, free) to snorkel with sea lion pups, watch marine iguanas on the lava rocks, or rent a surfboard (~$20/day). Finish with a celebratory dinner of fish soup and lobster at a waterfront restaurant.

Day 8

Fly back to Quito and depart

San Cristóbal / Quito

Spend the morning with the sea lions around the harbour, then take the midday flight from San Cristóbal (SCY) back to Quito, or the public speedboat to Santa Cruz and out via Baltra if that's how your ticket is routed — book this as the return leg of your domestic ticket. On arrival in Quito connect to your international flight (allow at least 4-5 hours). If your international departure is late evening like the group tour's (after 20:00), consider a cheap airport-nearby hostel or day room for a shower before flying.

🚌Domestic flight back (~£110-140 share) + city transfer (~£4)

Frequently asked questions

How much does Self-Launched Galápagos Wildlife Adventure: Quito to Quito cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £990 per person for 8 days in Ecuador & Galápagos Islands. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+

Yes — G Adventures charges around £3,160 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £990 — a saving of roughly £2,170 (69%) per person.

How long is the Ecuador & Galápagos Islands trip?+

This itinerary runs 8 days, covering 8 day-by-day stops through Ecuador & Galápagos Islands.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a wildlife, adventure, backpacker trip through Ecuador & Galápagos Islands, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
