Golden Egypt charges £395

£136saved per person (34%)

No-markup version: ~£259 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

A DIY version of Golden Egypt's 4-day "5 Star Nile Cruise" package: fly or train from Cairo to Aswan, then hop down the Nile by felucca, local minibus, shared taxi and train to see Philae, Abu Simbel, Kom Ombo, Edfu, Karnak, Luxor Temple, the Valley of the Kings and Hatshepsut's temple — staying in budget guesthouses in Aswan and Luxor rather than a cruise ship. You lose the pool deck and full-board dining, but you gain free time, cheaper drinks and total control of your pace. Costs are rough estimates for one person, sharing a twin room where possible, excluding international flights.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Cairo → Aswan: Philae Temple, Unfinished Obelisk & High Dam

Cairo / Aswan

Book the early-morning EgyptAir or Air Cairo flight from Cairo to Aswan (roughly £50–75 one way booked a few weeks ahead), or take the overnight sleeper train from Cairo Ramses station (~£55–70 in a single cabin, ~£40 sharing) if you want to save a hotel night. Drop your bag at a guesthouse on Elephantine Island or along the Aswan Corniche. In the afternoon, take a local taxi or microbus to the High Dam (entry ~£1), then walk down to the Philae Temple jetty and share a small boat across to Agilika Island (~£4–6 per person shared, £12–15 if you have to hire the whole boat). Philae entry is ~£12. Wander the Kiosk of Trajan and the Temple of Hathor, then stop at the Unfinished Obelisk quarry in town (~£5) on the way back. Sunset felucca sail around Elephantine Island is ~£6–10 per person.

🚌Domestic flight Cairo–Aswan (~£50–75) or overnight sleeper train (~£40–70); local taxis/microbuses in Aswan (~£5–8 for the day); shared boat to Philae

Abu Simbel at Sunrise, then Sailing to Kom Ombo

Abu Simbel / Aswan / Kom Ombo

Join one of the daily shared minibus convoys to Abu Simbel, leaving Aswan around 4am. Book direct through your guesthouse or an Aswan operator for ~£18–25 per person for the return seat; Abu Simbel entry is ~£14 and covers both the Great Temple of Ramses II and the Temple of Queen Nefertari. You get about 2–2.5 hours on site before the drive back. Alternatively, the local public bus is cheaper but slower. In the afternoon, either take a shared minibus or the slow local train north to Kom Ombo (~£2–4, 45 mins) and visit the dual temple of Sobek and Horus the Elder (~£6) at golden hour, when the tour groups have gone. Overnight in Kom Ombo village or push on to Edfu (~£3 by shared taxi).

Then take a shared minibus or second-class train from Edfu to Luxor (~£2–3, about 1.5 hours). Check into a guesthouse on Luxor's West Bank or near the Corniche (~£10–16 pp). In the late afternoon visit Karnak Temple Complex (~£10) and walk the Avenue of Sphinxes to Luxor Temple (~£8), which is beautifully lit after dark. A licensed guide for the day, if you want one, is ~£25–40 per group — split it with other travellers from your hostel to keep it cheap.

West Bank: Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut & Colossi of Memnon

Luxor

Optional pre-dawn hot air balloon over the West Bank — book via GetYourGuide or a local operator for ~£60–85 (much less than the operator's $100 add-on). Otherwise start at 6:30am: take the public ferry across the Nile (~£0.30) and hire a bike (~£3/day) or a shared microbus to the West Bank sites. Valley of the Kings entry (~£14, includes three tombs; Tutankhamun's tomb is extra ~£10) — arrive at opening to beat the heat and crowds. Then Hatshepsut's Temple (~£6) and the Colossi of Memnon (free). Finish with a cheap koshari lunch in town. The tour officially ends here, but most travellers stay another night in Luxor before flying or training back to Cairo; a Luxor–Cairo flight is ~£45–70.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Self-Launched Nile Valley: Cairo to Aswan to Luxor on a Budget cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £259 per person for 4 days in Egypt (Cairo, Aswan, Kom Ombo, Edfu, Luxor). This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Golden Egypt?+

Yes — Golden Egypt charges around £395 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £259 — a saving of roughly £136 (34%) per person.

How long is the Egypt (Cairo, Aswan, Kom Ombo, Edfu, Luxor) trip?+

This itinerary runs 4 days, covering 4 day-by-day stops through Egypt (Cairo, Aswan, Kom Ombo, Edfu, Luxor).

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a culture, budget, backpacker trip through Egypt (Cairo, Aswan, Kom Ombo, Edfu, Luxor), self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
