Fly into Aeropuerto Internacional El Calafate (FTE). A pre-booked airport shuttle (remis/shared taxi) into town costs around £5–8 per person — arrange this with your hostel in advance or book via a local remis app. Check into your hostel, pick up a local SIM or use Wi-Fi to download offline maps of the area (Maps.me or organic maps work great here). Spend the afternoon strolling the Costanera along Lago Argentino, visiting the Glaciarium museum (optional, ~£10) or simply getting your bearings. Stock up on snacks and supplies at the local supermarket for trail days ahead. El Calafate's compact centre has good parrillas and budget restaurants — budget around £10–14 for a solid dinner.

Today is the glacier — one of the most spectacular natural sights on Earth. Take the public bus from El Calafate's bus terminal to Los Glaciares National Park (runs from ~£7 return, operated by Cal-Tur or similar — departs ~8am, check current schedule at the terminal). The national park entrance fee is approximately £15–18. Once inside, the extensive network of boardwalk walkways and viewing platforms lets you get extraordinarily close to the glacier face for free — you'll hear and see enormous chunks of ice calving into the lake. Wildlife spotting (condors, black-necked swans, foxes) along the boardwalks is excellent. For an even more dramatic experience, book the optional Navegación Safari boat ride (close-up approach along the glacier face, ~£20–25) directly with Hielo y Aventura at the park or online. Return to El Calafate on the afternoon bus.

Book a shared shuttle via Turismo Zaahj or similar operators in town (~£50–70 return including transfer). You'll need your passport and ensure you have no restricted food items for the border. Torres del Paine's famous towers and Lago Pehoé are utterly breathtaking. Option 3: Book the optional Lago Argentino boat excursion to Upsala and Spegazzini Glaciers (full day, ~£65 via Fernández Campbell — one of Patagonia's great boat adventures).
