A self-launched, solo-friendly version of G Adventures' 4-day "Glaciers Experience" — same base in El Calafate, same headline day at Perito Moreno, but booked independently. Fly or bus into El Calafate, stay in a well-located hostel or budget guesthouse instead of a comfort hotel, and join the same shared shuttle-and-guide excursions the group tour uses (they're sold to the public too). Day 3 unlocks the real Patagonia extras: the Upsala/Onelli boat day, kayaking among icebergs, or a lazy afternoon on Lago Argentino. Costs below are approximate backpacker/budget-mid rates in GBP and exclude international flights into Argentina.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive El Calafate — settle in and scope the town

El Calafate

Land at Comandante Armando Tola airport (FTE) and skip the private transfer: the local Airport Bus (Ves Patagonia / Las Lengas) runs to the town centre for about £8-10 per person and drops on Avenida del Libertador. If you're arriving overland, the bus terminal is a 10-minute walk from the main strip. Check into a hostel or guesthouse near Libertador — private rooms in hostels here are excellent value. Spend the afternoon walking the town: the Reserva Laguna Nimez boardwalk at the edge of town is free-ish (small entry fee, ~£2) and brilliant for flamingos and upland geese at golden hour. Book tomorrow's Perito Moreno excursion tonight at any of the small tour offices on Libertador, or pre-book online. Grab dinner at a parrilla — a half portion of lamb plus a glass of Malbec is around £12-15; supermarket picadas are cheaper.

🚌Local airport bus ~£9; walking in town

🛏Hostel private room or budget guesthouse near Avenida del Libertador (e.g. hostel chains or family-run hospedajes) — ~£24/night

  • →Laguna Nimez reserve boardwalk (~£2)
  • →Book Perito Moreno day tour
  • →Stroll Avenida del Libertador
~£60
Day 2

Perito Moreno Glacier — full day in Los Glaciares National Park

Los Glaciares National Park / Perito Moreno

The centrepiece. Book the shared full-day Perito Moreno excursion the same way the group tour does — a minibus with bilingual guide, roughly £45-55 including the national park entrance (~£25 of that is the park fee, sometimes charged separately so check). Departure is around 7:30-8am, 80km west along the shore of Lago Argentino. You get 2.5-3 hours at the balconies and walkways watching house-sized ice calve into the water — genuinely one of the loudest, most dramatic natural sights on earth. Add the optional 1-hour boat up to the glacier face (~£50-60, bookable on the day at the pier or as a tour add-on) if the budget allows; the walkways alone are still spectacular. Optional mini-trekking on the ice is bookable separately and needs booking ahead. Back in town around 5-6pm.

🚌Shared minibus excursion with hotel/central pickup (included in tour price)

🛏Same hostel/guesthouse — ~£24/night

  • →Full-day shared Perito Moreno excursion (~£50 incl. park entry)
  • →Optional boat to glacier face (~£55)
  • →Optional ice trekking (pre-book, ~£120)
~£118
Day 3

Free day — Upsala & Onelli glaciers, kayaking or Lago Argentino

Puerto Bandera / Lago Argentino

The tour operator leaves this day open and so should you — this is where independent travel wins, because you can pick one big thing instead of paying for extras on top. Best option: the full-day Upsala & Onelli catamaran from Puerto Bandera (~£140-160 including the shared minibus transfer and park entry) — you sail past floating icebergs to the Spegazzini and Upsala glacier faces. Cheaper alternative: morning kayak among the icebergs near Perito Moreno (~£70-90) or a shorter afternoon Lago Argentino cruise (~£45). On a tight budget, hire a bike from town and ride out to the lakeshore viewpoints, or take the local bus to Puerto Bandera for the boat launch views, then spend the afternoon on pastries and coffee. Book all of these via local operators on Libertador the day before.

🚌Shared minibus transfer to Puerto Bandera (~£15 return)

🛏Same hostel/guesthouse — ~£24/night

  • →Upsala & Onelli boat day (~£150) OR iceberg kayaking (~£80) OR Lago Argentino cruise (~£45)
~£175
Day 4

Morning in El Calafate and departure

El Calafate

Slow breakfast, a last wander past the Glaciarium (the ice museum on the edge of town, ~£10 entry, worth it if you have a late flight and want context on the Southern Patagonian Ice Field) and souvenir shopping for Calafate berry jam. Take the local airport bus back to FTE (~£9) — allow 90 minutes before a domestic flight. If you're continuing on, the bus terminal connects to El Chaltén (3 hrs, ~£18) for Fitz Roy hiking or Puerto Natales in Chile (5-6 hrs, ~£25) for Torres del Paine — two obvious add-ons the 4-day tour can't give you.

🚌Local airport bus ~£9

🛏Check out — none

  • →Glaciarium ice museum (~£10)
  • →Souvenir shopping
  • →Optional onward bus to El Chaltén (~£18)
~£42

Frequently asked questions

How much does The Glaciers Experience — Self-Launched El Calafate cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £395 per person for 4 days in El Calafate & Los Glaciares National Park, Patagonia. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+

Yes — G Adventures charges around £1,095 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £395 — a saving of roughly £700 (64%) per person.

How long is the El Calafate & Los Glaciares National Park, Patagonia trip?+

This itinerary runs 4 days, covering 4 day-by-day stops through El Calafate & Los Glaciares National Park, Patagonia.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, hiking, budget trip through El Calafate & Los Glaciares National Park, Patagonia, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
