This self-launched version of RaftingClub TaraSport's 3-day Tara & Drina river adventure lets you book directly with the operator and cut out the marketplace middleman. The tour itself is outstanding value — a 22km rafting run through 23 rapids in one of Europe's most pristine river canyons — and TaraSport's own website (tarasportrafting.com) allows direct booking at €150 per person (plus €5 park tax), significantly cheaper than the $193 listed on TourRadar. Getting yourself to Foca independently via bus from Sarajevo, Podgorica or Dubrovnik is straightforward and cheap. All costs below are approximate estimates per person.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Travel to Foca & Arrive at TaraSport Camp

Foca, Bosnia & Herzegovina

Make your own way to Foca, a small town in eastern Bosnia that serves as the gateway to the Tara River Canyon. The easiest routes are by bus from Sarajevo (~2.5 hrs, ~£6), from Podgorica in Montenegro (~2 hrs, ~£8), or a longer journey from Dubrovnik via Trebinje. Foca's bus station is central and taxis to the TaraSport camp are cheap. Alternatively, book the camp's own transfer from Žabljak (€120/person return, worth splitting with a group). Check in to your wooden hut or shared cabin at the Outdoor Resort TaraSport — a brilliant riverside camp deep in the forested canyon. Dinner is included in your direct booking with TaraSport. Spend the evening meeting fellow rafters, enjoying the camp bar, volleyball courts, and hot tub.

🚌Intercity bus to Foca from Sarajevo, Podgorica, or Dubrovnik. Local taxi or arranged camp transfer to the resort (~£3–5 taxi from town).

The main event. After breakfast at camp, gear up in provided neoprene suits, boots, helmets and protective vests — all included in your direct booking fee. A jeep transfer takes you up to the put-in point at Brštanovica on the Tara River. Your professional guide leads you through 23 rapids over approximately 3–5 hours, navigating the stunning turquoise-green canyon — one of the deepest in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage site. The river water is famously clean enough to drink straight from. You'll transition from the Tara onto the Drina before pulling out near camp. Swim during the calm stretches and soak in the scenery. Back at camp, lunch and dinner are included. Frequently asked questions

How much does Self-Launched Rafting on the Tara & Drina Rivers, Bosnia cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £100 per person for 3 days in Foca, Bosnia & Herzegovina. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with RaftingClub TaraSport?+

Yes — RaftingClub TaraSport charges around £152 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £100 — a saving of roughly £52 (34%) per person.

How long is the Foca, Bosnia & Herzegovina trip?+

This itinerary runs 3 days, covering 3 day-by-day stops through Foca, Bosnia & Herzegovina.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, backpacker, budget trip through Foca, Bosnia & Herzegovina, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
