Galápagos — North, Central & South Islands (Self-Launched Land & Boat Version)
10 days · Galápagos Islands & Ecuador
G Adventures charges £4,850
No-markup version: ~£1,410 per person
Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.
A self-launched version of G Adventures' 10-day Eden yacht cruise: same islands, same wildlife, booked independently. Instead of chartering a spot on a small tourist-class yacht, you fly to the Galápagos on your own ticket, base yourself in Puerto Ayora (Santa Cruz) and Puerto Baquerizo Moreno (San Cristóbal), and tick off the headline experiences through day-boat day trips, water taxis and inter-island ferries. You'll still reach Genovesa's red-footed boobies, Bartolomé's Pinnacle Rock, Black Turtle Cove, the Charles Darwin Research Station, Floreana's Post Office Bay, Española's waved albatross and the San Cristóbal Interpretation Centre — just with more independence and a much smaller bill. Note that some remote northern sites (Genovesa in particular) are only reliably reached on a liveaboard cruise; a one- or two-night budget cruise add-on is the workaround outlined here, and you must travel with a licensed Galápagos National Park naturalist guide for every landing (mandatory park rule). All costs are approximate backpacker rates in GBP and exclude international flights.
Day-by-day
Arrive Quito
Quito, Ecuador
Land at Mariscal Sucre Airport and take an airport bus or shared taxi into the historic centre (roughly £3–6). Quito sits at 2,850m, so take it easy: short wander through the colonial Old Town, an early dinner, lots of water. Buy a local SIM (Claro/Movistar, ~£6 for a data bundle) and withdraw USD cash — the Galápagos runs on cash and ATMs are scarce and unreliable. Book your TCT (Transit Control Card) process and confirm your Galápagos flight for tomorrow.
🚌Airport bus/shared taxi to centre ~£4; walk
🛏Hostel dorm in Quito Old Town or La Mariscal (e.g. Community Hostel or similar), £10–14
- →Old Town orientation walk (Plaza Grande, La Compañía)
- →SIM card + cash run
- →Optional: Quito City Tour & Equator Line booked via GetYourGuide (~£45)
Fly to Baltra & Bachas Beach
Baltra / Santa Cruz
Catch a dawn domestic flight Quito–Baltra (book LATAM/Avianca directly, ~£200–280 return including the Guayaquil stop). At the airport pay the Galápagos National Park entry fee in cash on arrival (~£155/$200) and the $20 TCT card if not already sorted. Take the free airport shuttle to the Itabaca Channel, the public ferry across (~£1), then a colectivo or bus to Puerto Ayora (~£2). Drop bags, then take a water taxi (~£0.50) or walk the trail to Tortuga Bay for a first taste of marine iguanas and white sand. Late afternoon: a short local panga run to Las Bachas-style beach areas near Santa Cruz for Sally Lightfoot crabs and sea lions.
🚌Domestic flight ~£220 return (amortised ~£22/day); ferry 50c; bus/colectivo £2; water taxi 50c
🛏Guesthouse or hostel in Puerto Ayora, £15–22 (e.g. Hostal España or similar)
- →Galápagos National Park entry formalities (cash)
- →Tortuga Bay walk
- →Beach and wildlife spotting at Las Bachas/Santa Cruz north shore
Genovesa Island day trip (Darwin Bay & El Barranco)
Genovesa Island
Genovesa is far north and realistically reached only by boat. The practical self-launched route is a guided day trip or a short 1-night cruise leg booked through a Puerto Ayora agency (walk the kiosks on Avenida Charles Darwin and compare — prices drop for last-minute spaces, roughly £220–320 for a Genovesa day trip including guide, lunch, snorkel gear and park fees). Land at Darwin Bay among nesting frigatebirds, gulls and boobies, then El Barranco's cliff trail for red-footed boobies. Snorkel in the bay. If you'd rather not commit to the boat, the alternative is a full-day Santa Fe or Plaza Sur trip (cheaper, ~£110) plus a separate northern-islands cruise add-on later. Note: every landing must be with a licensed park naturalist guide.
🚌Guided day boat from Puerto Ayora (included in tour cost); walk to dock
🛏Back in Puerto Ayora guesthouse, £15–22 (or overnight aboard a budget boat if you take the cruise option)
- →Darwin Bay landing and bird trails
- →El Barranco red-footed booby colony
- →Snorkelling at Darwin Bay
- →Mandatory Galápagos National Park naturalist guide
Bartolomé & Sullivan Bay
Bartolomé / Santiago Island
Book the classic Bartolomé day trip from a Puerto Ayora agency (~£130–170 including guide, lunch, snorkel gear; ask about the combined Bartolomé + Sullivan Bay itinerary — some operators run it, others only Bartolomé). Hike the wooden stairway to the summit for Pinnacle Rock and the lunar volcanic landscape, then snorkel with Galápagos penguins and sea lions off the beach. If Sullivan Bay isn't on your boat's route, swap in a Santiago/Sullivan Bay day trip on another day or take the Bartolomé-only version and put the savings toward the cruise add-on.
🚌Day boat from Puerto Ayora (included in trip cost)
🛏Puerto Ayora guesthouse, £15–22
- →Bartolomé summit hike to Pinnacle Rock viewpoint
- →Snorkelling with penguins and sea lions
- →Sullivan Bay lava formations (if offered)
Black Turtle Cove & Cerro Dragón
Santa Cruz north coast
Two flexible DIY options today. For Black Turtle Cove, ask agencies about a panga/mangrove excursion — it's a no-landing, no-snorkel site, so it's often bundled into north-coast boat trips rather than sold alone; expect ~£60–90 with a guide if you can find a shared departure. For Cerro Dragón, take a public bus or colectivo north to the Santa Cruz highlands edge and walk the dry-forest trail with land iguanas and cactus finches (cheap, ~£3 transport, free trail — go with a guide if you want interpretation). Spend the late afternoon at the fish market in Puerto Ayora where pelicans and sea lions squabble over scraps.
🚌Local bus/colectivo £3–5; panga excursion boat if booked
🛏Puerto Ayora guesthouse, £15–22
- →Black Turtle Cove mangrove panga excursion (guided)
- →Cerro Dragón land iguana trail
- →Puerto Ayora fish market wildlife watching
Charles Darwin Research Station & Santa Cruz Highlands
Puerto Ayora / Santa Cruz highlands
Walk or take the short taxi to the Charles Darwin Research Station at no fixed entry cost (donation appreciated) — see the giant tortoise breeding programme and Fausto Llerena centre. Then hire a shared highlands taxi or join a half-day tour (~£25–35) to El Chato Reserve or Rancho Primicias for wild giant tortoises, lava tunnels and coffee. Lunch at a highland farm. Free evening in Puerto Ayora — book your inter-island ferry to San Cristóbal for tomorrow (~£28–35, 2–2.5 hrs, sit upstairs).
🚌Shared taxi/tour van to highlands £25–35; walk to research station
🛏Puerto Ayora guesthouse, £15–22
- →Charles Darwin Research Station and tortoise breeding centre
- →Santa Cruz highlands giant tortoise visit (El Chato / Primicias)
- →Lava tunnels and highland farm lunch
Floreana Island & Punta Cormorant
Floreana Island
Take a full-day Floreana boat trip from Puerto Ayora (~£150–190 with guide, lunch, snorkel gear; book 2–3 days ahead, and confirm the itinerary includes Post Office Bay and Corona del Diablo). Drop a postcard in the historic Post Office Bay barrel, walk Punta Cormorant's green-sand and white-sand beaches for flamingos and turtle nesting tracks, and snorkel Corona del Diablo — one of the best snorkel sites in the archipelago. Order a cheap set-menu lunch in Puerto Ayora on return.
🚌Day boat from Puerto Ayora (included in trip cost)
🛏Puerto Ayora guesthouse, £15–22
- →Post Office Bay barrel
- →Punta Cormorant beach walks and flamingos
- →Snorkelling at Corona del Diablo
Ferry to San Cristóbal & snorkel La Lobería
San Cristóbal Island
Morning inter-island ferry to Puerto Baquerizo Moreno (~£28–35). Check into a guesthouse, then walk 20 minutes to La Lobería beach for a free snorkel with sea lions and marine iguanas. Late afternoon stroll the malecón where sea lions sleep on the benches, and book a Española day trip for tomorrow — boats leave from San Cristóbal and this is the cheapest way to reach Punta Suárez and Gardner Bay (~£160–200, includes guide, lunch, snorkel). Also good here: Playa Mann, the Interpretation Centre (goes with Day 9 if timing's tight), and a cheap encebollado fish stew for dinner.
🚌Inter-island ferry £30; walk
🛏Guesthouse in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, £15–22
- →La Lobería snorkelling
- →Malecón sea lion spotting
- →Book Española day trip
Española Island — Punta Suárez & Gardner Bay
Española Island
Full-day boat trip to the oldest island in the archipelago. Punta Suárez is a wildlife conveyor belt: waved albatross (April–December), blue-footed and Nazca boobies, mockingbirds, and blowhole cliffs. Lunch aboard, then Gardner Bay's long white beach for sea lions and a snorkel among turtles and reef fish. On return, swing by the San Cristóbal Interpretation Centre (free, excellent context on human and natural history) or hit Playa Mann for a sunset swim. Book your Baltra–Quito flight back for tomorrow morning and confirm the early ferry so you make it.
🚌Day boat to Española (included in trip cost); walk
🛏Puerto Baquerizo Moreno guesthouse, £15–22
- →Punta Suárez bird colonies and waved albatross
- →Gardner Bay beach and snorkelling
- →San Cristóbal Interpretation Centre
Fly back to Quito & depart
San Cristóbal → Baltra → Quito
Catch the early inter-island ferry back to Santa Cruz and the free shuttle to Baltra airport, or fly directly San Cristóbal–Quito if a cheaper routing works (check Avianca/LATAM). Remember the park entry and TCT formalities on the way out. On landing in Quito, take the airport bus or a taxi straight to your onward flight — leave a buffer, domestic delays are common. If you have a spare afternoon, the Teleférico cable car (~£7) is a good lung-testing way to end the trip.
🚌Inter-island ferry £30; free airport shuttle; domestic flight ~£220 return (amortised here ~£22)
🛏None (departure day) — or an airport hotel if your international flight is next day (~£35)
- →Optional Quito Teleférico or Old Town final wander

Frequently asked questions
How much does Galápagos — North, Central & South Islands (Self-Launched Land & Boat Version) cost?+
Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £1,410 per person for 10 days in Galápagos Islands & Ecuador. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.
Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+
Yes — G Adventures charges around £4,850 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £1,410 — a saving of roughly £3,440 (71%) per person.
How long is the Galápagos Islands & Ecuador trip?+
This itinerary runs 10 days, covering 10 day-by-day stops through Galápagos Islands & Ecuador.
How do I join this trip?+
You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.
Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+
Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.
Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+
Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.
What kind of trip is this?+
This is a adventure, wildlife, backpacker trip through Galápagos Islands & Ecuador, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
