Galápagos West & Central Islands — Self-Launched Island-Hopping Adventure

Arrive in Quito at any time and settle into a hostel in the La Mariscal or Centro Histórico area. Use the afternoon to acclimatise to the 2,850m altitude, and if you have energy, ride the TelefériQo cable car up Pichincha or wander the colonial plaza at Plaza Grande. Stock up on reef-safe sunscreen, a refillable water bottle and snacks before tomorrow's early flight — Galápagos prices are steep. Double-check your Galápagos paperwork this evening: your pre-registered Transit Control Card (INGALA) and a return flight are both required before you can board.

Pay the £16 Galápagos National Park entrance fee and the £15 INGALA transit card on arrival at Baltra. Take the free airline shuttle to the Itabaca Channel, the public ferry across (£1), then a shared minibus or public bus to Puerto Ayora (£4–5, ~45 mins). Take a morning shared excursion to North Seymour, a low flat island just north of Baltra and the easiest place in the archipelago to walk among blue-footed boobies, great and magnificent frigatebirds, and huge sea lion colonies — the trail is a marked 2km loop with a mandatory park guide (~£75–90). Return to Santa Cruz, then take the afternoon public ferry and shuttle back to Baltra for your flight to Quito (aim for a departure after 15:00 to avoid stress).
