G Adventures charges £4,700

£3,420saved per person (73%)

No-markup version: ~£1,280 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

A DIY version of the G Adventures Monserrat cruise: instead of seven nights on a twin-share yacht with two naturalist guides, you fly into the islands independently, base yourself in Puerto Ayora (Santa Cruz), Puerto Villamil (Isabela) and Puerto Baquerizo Moreno (San Cristóbal), and string together the same headline experiences using public speedboats, self-bookable day tours, and national park hiking trails. You'll still snorkel with sea lions at Chinese Hat and Rábida-style bays, hike the Sierra Negra caldera, meet giant tortoises in the highlands, walk the cactus forests of South Plaza and see marine iguanas at Punta Pitt — just booked locally, paced yourself, and for roughly a third of the cruise price. Includes the $100 park entry and $20 transit control card, which the operator charges separately. All figures are approximate and in GBP.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Quito — altitude acclimatisation & old town

Quito, Ecuador

Land at Quito's Mariscal Sucre airport and take the Aeroservicios shuttle to the old airport terminal (~$8) then a taxi to your hostel in La Mariscal or Centro Histórico (~$5). Quito sits at 2,850m, so take it easy. Wander the colonial streets, pop into the Basílica del Voto Nacional, and eat at a mercado (Mercado Central set lunches $3-4). Evening: pick up your Galápagos transit control card is NOT possible today — do it at the airport tomorrow morning. Buy a local SIM (Claro/Movistar, ~$10) and withdraw cash — ATMs in the Galápagos are unreliable.

🚌Aeroservicios airport shuttle ~£7 + taxi ~£4

🛏Hostel in Centro Histórico or La Mariscal, dorm ~£12

  • →Old town walking loop: Plaza Grande, La Compañía, Basílica
  • →Mercado Central cheap eats

Day 2

Fly to Baltra → Santa Cruz → Mosquera-style beach time

Quito → Santa Cruz (Puerto Ayora)

Early flight Quito–Baltra (LATAM/Avianca/TAME, roughly £180–260 return if booked 2–3 months ahead; there is usually a 1-hour refuelling stop in Guayaquil). Buy the $20 Transit Control Card at the counter in Quito airport before boarding, and pay the $100 National Park entry in cash on arrival at Baltra. Take the free airline bus to the Itabaca Channel, the public ferry across (~$1) and a bus or shared taxi to Puerto Ayora (~$2–5). Afternoon: walk to Tortuga Bay (free, 40 min paved trail) — white sand, marine iguanas, and a chance to snorkel with white-tipped reef sharks in the mangroves. Book your speedboat to Isabela for tomorrow at one of the agencies on Avenida Charles Darwin.

Day 3

Speedboat to Isabela — Sierra Negra caldera hike

Isabela Island (Puerto Villamil)

Morning public speedboat Santa Cruz → Isabela (~2 hrs, $30–35 each way, book a day ahead; bring motion-sickness tablets). Drop bags at your guesthouse in sleepy Puerto Villamil and join the afternoon Sierra Negra hike — the same second-largest basaltic caldera in the world the cruise visits. You must go with a licensed local guide ($40–45 including transport to the trailhead); book through your hostel or the park office. The 16km walk takes ~5 hours with views into the caldera and on to Volcán Chico. Evening on the beach with sea lions and cheap seafood at the kiosks.

🚌Public speedboat $33 each way (≈£27 this leg)

🛏Guesthouse in Puerto Villamil ~£16

  • →Volcán Chico lava fields viewpoint

Day 4

Las Tintoreras, tortoise breeding centre & Concha de Perla

Isabela Island

Book the short Las Tintoreras boat trip (~$35–40) — a 5-minute panga ride to a lava islet where white-tipped reef sharks rest in a channel and blue-footed boobies nest; you snorkel with sea lions afterwards. Afternoon: walk the free wooden boardwalk to the Centro de Crianza de Tortugas (giant tortoise breeding centre, ~$5 donation) and then to Concha de Perla, a sheltered mangrove lagoon with free snorkelling and curious sea lions. This mirrors the cruise's Puerto Villamil day, done on your own schedule.

🛏Guesthouse in Puerto Villamil ~£16

  • →Las Tintoreras snorkel & shark channel
  • →Giant tortoise breeding centre
  • →Concha de Perla snorkel
~£62
Day 5

Los Túneles snorkel trip, then back to Santa Cruz

Isabela → Santa Cruz

Early morning Los Túneles tour (~$85–100) — a 45-minute boat ride to lava tunnels on the southwest coast where sea turtles, seahorses, rays and dozens of sea lions swim; this is the independent equivalent of the cruise's Chinese Hat/Rábida snorkel stops. Back by lunch, then catch the 2pm public speedboat to Santa Cruz. Evening in Puerto Ayora: buy a cheap dinner along the fishing pier and watch pelicans and sea lions beg for scraps at the fish market.

🚌Speedboat Isabela → Santa Cruz $33 (~£27)

🛏Guesthouse in Puerto Ayora ~£18

  • →Los Túneles snorkelling excursion

Day 6

Highlands tortoises, lava tunnels & Charles Darwin Station

Santa Cruz highlands

Rent a bike or join a shared highland tour (~$35–45) to see giant tortoises in the wild at El Chato or Rancho Primicias (entry $5), walk through the Lava Tunnels, and visit the twin craters of Los Gemelos. Afternoon back in town: free entry to the Charles Darwin Research Station and Fausto Llerena tortoise breeding centre — the conservation story behind everything you've seen. Tonight book a day tour to a central island (South Plaza or Santa Fé, ~$120–150) and your San Cristóbal speedboat.

🛏Guesthouse in Puerto Ayora ~£18

Day 7

South Plaza & Santa Fé day boat

Santa Cruz → South Plaza & Santa Fé

Join a licensed small-boat day trip (~$130–160 including naturalist guide, lunch and snorkel gear) that lands on South Plaza — a cactus forest carpeted with land iguanas and a huge sea lion colony — and stops at Santa Fé for a walk among marine iguanas and a snorkel with sea lions and turtles. This is precisely the day the cruise runs on Day 7, just as a day-trip instead of from your cabin. Book 1–2 days ahead; these boats sell out in high season.

🚌Day boat incl. in activity cost

🛏Guesthouse in Puerto Ayora ~£18

  • →South Plaza landing & cactus forest
  • →Santa Fé hike & snorkel
~£120
Day 8

Speedboat to San Cristóbal — Punta Pitt-style wildlife & La Galapaguera

Santa Cruz → San Cristóbal (Puerto Baquerizo Moreno)

Morning public speedboat Santa Cruz → San Cristóbal (~2 hrs, $35–40). Afternoon: shared trip to La Galapaguera de Cerro Colorado ($30–40), the semi-wild giant tortoise reserve in the highlands, with a stop at El Junco crater lake where frigatebirds wash in freshwater. If you want the Punta Pitt experience (the only place all three booby species nest together), book it for tomorrow morning — it runs ~$120–150 from Puerto Baquerizo Moreno with a licensed guide.

🚌Public speedboat $38 (~£31)

🛏Hostel/guesthouse in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno ~£16

  • →La Galapaguera tortoise reserve
  • →El Junco crater lake
~£80
Day 9

Punta Pitt / Kicker Rock snorkel, then fly back to Quito

San Cristóbal → Quito

Option A: early Punta Pitt boat trip for red-footed, blue-footed and Nazca boobies plus sea lion colonies. Option B (cheaper and arguably better): Kicker Rock (León Dormido) snorkel trip ~$110–130 — a dramatic volcanic tuff cone where you can drift-snorkel with Galápagos sharks, turtles and rays. Either returns mid-afternoon. Then visit the free San Cristóbal Interpretation Centre and walk to Playa Mann for a last swim with sea lions. Late afternoon/evening flight San Cristóbal → Quito (~£90–130 one way if booked separately; often cheaper to book both island flights as an open-jaw return in advance).

🚌Return island flight to Quito ~£110

🛏Hostel in Quito ~£12

  • →Punta Pitt or Kicker Rock snorkel
  • →San Cristóbal Interpretation Centre
  • →Playa Mann
~£150
Day 10

Quito — depart

Quito

Breakfast at a local café, a last wander through La Ronda or the artisan market at Mercado Artesanal, then Aeroservicios shuttle or taxi back to the airport for your international flight. Frequently asked questions

How much does Self-Launched Galápagos: West, Central & East Islands by Land & Local Boat cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £1,280 per person for 10 days in Galápagos Islands & Ecuador. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+

Yes — G Adventures charges around £4,700 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £1,280 — a saving of roughly £3,420 (73%) per person.

How long is the Galápagos Islands & Ecuador trip?+

This itinerary runs 10 days, covering 10 day-by-day stops through Galápagos Islands & Ecuador.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, wildlife, backpacker trip through Galápagos Islands & Ecuador, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
