Galápagos Islands Self-Launched: Quito to West & Central Islands by Land & Local Boat

Galápagos Islands Self-Launched: Quito to West & Central Islands by Land & Local Boat

8 days · Galápagos Islands & Quito, Ecuador

G Adventures charges £2,873

£1,428saved per person (50%)

No-markup version: ~£1,445 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

An independent, self-launched version of G Adventures' 8-day Eden yacht cruise through the Galápagos' west and central islands. Instead of five nights aboard a private yacht, you island-hop on the public speedboats between Santa Cruz, Isabela and Fernandina-facing waters, base yourself in Puerto Ayora and Puerto Villamil guesthouses, and join small-group day boats and National Park-licensed naturalist tours booked individually through GetYourGuide, Viator or directly with island operators. You see the same wildlife — giant tortoises, marine iguanas, flightless cormorants, penguins, sea turtles, blue-footed boobies — but you pay for the specific excursions you want rather than a full-ship charter. Note: no independent boat can replicate the exact Eden itinerary, and some far-western sites (Punta Moreno, Elizabeth Bay, Tagus Cove, Rábida) are best reached on a multi-day liveaboard — this plan substitutes land-based equivalents plus one or two day-boat excursions, and flags where a short liveaboard add-on would close the gap. Park entry (US$200), transit control card (US$20) and TCT/INGALA fees are real costs you pay yourself.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Quito — old town wander & altitude acclimatisation

Quito, Ecuador

Land at Mariscal Sucre airport and take the public AeroSucre or a metered taxi/Uber into the historic centre (~£6-8). Quito sits at 2,850m, so take it easy. Book into a Mariscal or Centro Histórico hostel/guesthouse. Afternoon gentle wander of Plaza Grande, La Compañía church and Calle La Ronda for a cheap set lunch (almuerzo, £3-4). Evening: pick up any cash you need — ATMs on the islands are unreliable, and Galápagos runs largely on US dollars cash. Confirm your Avianca/LATAM Quito–Baltra flight for tomorrow and pre-purchase any day tours you haven't already booked.

🚌Airport bus or taxi from UIO (~£6-8); walking in the old town

🛏Hostel or guesthouse, Centro Histórico or La Mariscal (dorm £10-14, private £22-30)

Day 2

Fly to Baltra, cross to Santa Cruz & see giant tortoises in the wild

Baltra / Puerto Ayora, Santa Cruz Island

Early morning flight Quito–Baltra (Seymour) via Guayaquil, roughly £180-260 return booked direct with Avianca or LATAM (the tour bundles this in — you buy it yourself and can often cut cost with flexible dates). Pay the US$20 Transit Control Card at the Quito departure desk and the US$200 Galápagos National Park entry on arrival at Baltra — cash. Take the free airline shuttle to the Itabaca Channel, the public ferry across (£1), then a colectivo or bus to Puerto Ayora (£1.50). In town, book the afternoon highlands excursion directly with an operator (Las Primicias / El Chato giant tortoise reserves, ~£20-25 including transport, or hire a bike and ride the loop yourself ~£8). Evening: pick up supplies and confirm tomorrow's Isabela speedboat.

🚌Flight UIO–GPS (~£180-260 return), free airport shuttle, Itabaca ferry £1, colectivo £1.50

Speedboat to Isabela — Puerto Villamil & Sierra Negra volcano hike

Puerto Villamil, Isabela Island

Take the morning public speedboat Puerto Ayora–Puerto Villamil (2.5-3 hrs, ~£28-32, book at a Puerto Ayora tour office the day before; seasickness tablets recommended). Check into a Puerto Villamil guesthouse, then join a licensed Sierra Negra volcano hike — 16km round trip to the rim of one of the world's largest calderas, usually booked on-island or via GetYourGuide for ~£35-45 with a Natural Park guide (mandatory on this trail). Late afternoon: walk to the free tortoise breeding centre (Centro de Crianza Arnaldo Tupiza), the flamingo lagoons, and the long white-sand beach with sea lions at the point.

🚌Public speedboat Santa Cruz–Isabela ~£30

🛏Guesthouse in Puerto Villamil (private room £22-32)

  • →Sierra Negra volcano hike with NP guide

Day 4

Tintoreras snorkelling & shallow-water wildlife

Puerto Villamil, Isabela Island

A full day based on and around Isabela. Morning: the classic Tintoreras boat excursion (~£30-40, 2-3 hrs) — a short panga ride to the islet's lava channels to see white-tipped reef sharks, sea turtles and marine iguanas, followed by snorkelling with penguins and rays. Afternoon alternative for more remote water: many Isabela operators run afternoon panga trips toward the Punta Moreno / Elizabeth Bay direction in season — ask locally, as availability is weather- and permit-dependent; a 2-night Isabela liveaboard add-on is the more realistic way to reach those exact sites. Otherwise: hire snorkel gear (~£5) and swim the Concha de Perla lagoon, free and excellent for turtles and rays.

🚌Walking plus local panga trips

🛏Guesthouse in Puerto Villamil (private room £22-32)

Day 5

Isabela to Santa Cruz — Los Túneles or ferry day

Isabela / Santa Cruz Island

If weather and permits allow, take a half-day Los Túneles excursion from Puerto Villamil (~£45-55) — lava arch formations known for huge sea turtle numbers, seahorses and blue-footed boobies, plus snorkelling. Alternatively, use the morning for the free wetlands and flamingo lagoons boardwalk, then take the afternoon speedboat back to Puerto Ayora (~£30). Evening in Puerto Ayora: Las Grietas lava crevice swim (free, 20-min water taxi & walk, ~£1), or the fish market where pelicans and sea lions squabble over scraps.

🚌Public speedboat Isabela–Santa Cruz ~£30

🛏Hostel/guesthouse in Puerto Ayora (private room £30-42)

  • →Los Túneles excursion (optional)
  • →Wetlands & flamingo lagoon boardwalk

Day 6

North Seymour or South Plaza day boat — boobies & sea lions

Santa Cruz Island

Book a full-day small-group boat trip from Puerto Ayora to North Seymour (~£100-130 including lunch, snorkel gear and a certified naturalist guide) — vast sea lion colonies, great and magnificent frigatebirds, blue-footed boobies and land iguanas, finishing with deep-water snorkelling. Cheaper alternatives if budget bites: Bartolomé or South Plaza day boats (~£90-120), or the self-guided-but-guided-required ferries to Plazas. Cheapest option of all: the free-ish Las Bachas beach bus (£3 round trip) plus snorkel. Book two days ahead at an operator office on the harbour — prices are firm and standardised, so comparing three offices is enough.

🚌Day boat from Puerto Ayora harbour (included in excursion price)

🛏Hostel/guesthouse in Puerto Ayora (private room £30-42)

  • →North Seymour day boat with NP naturalist guide
  • →Snorkelling with sea lions & turtles

Optional: Tortuga Bay walk (free, 40 mins each way) for white sand and marine iguanas. Frequently asked questions

How much does Galápagos Islands Self-Launched: Quito to West & Central Islands by Land & Local Boat cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £1,445 per person for 8 days in Galápagos Islands & Quito, Ecuador. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+

Yes — G Adventures charges around £2,873 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £1,445 — a saving of roughly £1,428 (50%) per person.

How long is the Galápagos Islands & Quito, Ecuador trip?+

This itinerary runs 8 days, covering 8 day-by-day stops through Galápagos Islands & Quito, Ecuador.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a adventure, wildlife, backpacker trip through Galápagos Islands & Quito, Ecuador, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
