Self-Launched Galápagos: Southern & Central Islands by Land & Local Boat
7 days · Galápagos Islands & Quito, Ecuador
G Adventures charges £2,350
No-markup version: ~£1,290 per person
Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.
A self-launched version of the seven-day Estrella del Mar cruise: instead of four nights aboard a chartered yacht with a group, you base yourself in cheap hostels and guesthouses on San Cristóbal, Isabela and Santa Cruz and use the inter-island public speedboats (roughly £25-30 per leg), local day-tour boats, and shared taxi trucks to reach the same wildlife sites — Punta Pitt, Kicker Rock, Cerro Brujo, Bahía Gardner, Punta Suárez, Post Office Bay, Punta Cormorant, Corona del Diablo and North Seymour. The trade-off is that some far-southern sites (Española's Punta Suárez and Gardner Bay, Floreana's Post Office Bay) require joining a licensed day-boat excursion from Puerto Baquerizo Moreno (arranged locally, ~£90-120), and all landings still carry a Galápagos National Park naturalist guide by law. Budget: the mandatory $100 park fee and $20 Transit Control Card are paid in cash at Quito airport and are included below. Costs are rough estimates, not quotes.
Day-by-day
Land in Quito, acclimatise and buy the Galápagos permits
Quito
Arrive in Quito (2,850 m) and take it easy — altitude is real here. From the new airport you can take the Aeroservicios bus to the old airport for about $8 USD then a taxi (~$5) to your hostel in the Old Town or La Mariscal, or a set-rate taxi straight in for around $25-30. Spend the afternoon wandering the colonial centre (Plaza Grande, La Basílica) and buy supplies for the islands: reef-safe sunscreen, dry bag, motion-sickness tablets. Tonight, if you haven't already, budget cash in hand for the Galápagos Transit Control Card ($20) — purchased at a dedicated counter at Quito airport before your flight — and the National Park entry fee ($100, payable in cash on arrival in the islands). Cash is king: bring USD notes under $100 and in good condition.

Fly to San Cristóbal, meet the sea lions and Isla Lobos
Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, San Cristóbal
Take an early Avianca/LATAM flight Quito–Guayaquil (1-hour refuelling stop)–San Cristóbal (SCY). Book well ahead; round-trip mainland–Galápagos fares typically run $350-450 USD — cheaper than in the packaged tour because you book the public fare yourself. Pay the $20 transit card before boarding and the $100 park fee on landing. Walk from the airstrip to your guesthouse (5 min) and you'll be sharing the malecón with sea lions. In the afternoon join a local boat to Isla Lobos (~$60-70, 3 hrs) for your first snorkel with sea lions and frigatebirds, or save cash and snorkel free at Playa Mann and La Lobería.
🚌Flight UIO–SCY ~£300-360 return (book 2-3 months ahead)
🛏Guesthouse/hostel private room, Puerto Baquerizo Moreno (~£18-22pp)
- →Isla Lobos boat + snorkel (~£50-55)
- →Free snorkel at Playa Mann / La Lobería
- →Malecón sea lion colony
Punta Pitt boobies and Kicker Rock snorkel
San Cristóbal / León Dormido
Book the full-day 'Punta Pitt + Cerro Brujo + Kicker Rock' boat with a licensed operator in town (ask at your guesthouse the day before; ~$150-180 USD including lunch, park guide and snorkel gear). It covers the same itinerary as the cruise day: a dry landing and walk up the lava slopes of Punta Pitt — the only place in Galápagos with all three booby species (red-footed, blue-footed, Nazca) nesting alongside frigatebirds — then the white powder beach of Cerro Brujo, and a snorkel at León Dormido (Kicker Rock) with hammerheads, turtles and rays if conditions allow. Back in town by late afternoon; eat at a local 'almuerzo' spot for $5-7.
🚌Day boat from Puerto Baquerizo Moreno (included in tour price)
🛏Guesthouse/hostel private room, Puerto Baquerizo Moreno (~£18-22pp)
- →Punta Pitt landing with naturalist guide
- →Cerro Brujo beach
- →Kicker Rock / León Dormido snorkel
- →Wetsuit hire (~£6)
Speedboat south to Isabela — flamingos, tortoises and Tintoreras
Puerto Villamil, Isabela
Take the morning public speedboat San Cristóbal–Isabela (2-2.5 hrs, ~$35-40 USD, buy at the pier ticket office; bring a dry bag and motion-sickness tablets). Check into a guesthouse in sleeply Puerto Villamil and walk the free Poza de los Flamencos lagoon, the tortoise breeding centre (Concha de Perla is a free snorkel spot with sea lions and penguins). In the afternoon take the cheap local boat to Las Tintoreras (~$40) for white-tip sharks, marine iguanas and penguins, or the Sierra Negra volcano hike (~$40 with guide). This replaces the cruise's Española day; note the waved albatross and Punta Suárez are only reachable via a licensed day-boat from San Cristóbal — if that's a must, ask your San Cristóbal operator about a two-day southern excursion before you leave (roughly $200+ extra).
🚌Public inter-island speedboat SCY–Isabela ~£30-35
🛏Guesthouse in Puerto Villamil (~£15-20pp)
- →Flamingo lagoon walk (free)
- →Tortoise breeding centre ($5)
- →Las Tintoreras boat + snorkel (~£32)
- →Concha de Perla free snorkel
Los Túneles snorkel, then speedboat to Santa Cruz
Isabela → Puerto Ayora, Santa Cruz
Early morning boat to Los Túneles (~$80-90 USD), lava-tube channels between Isabela's volcanic coast where you can snorkel with seahorses, sharks, rays and huge sea turtles — the closest self-bookable equivalent to the cruise's Corona del Diablo snorkel. Take the afternoon public speedboat Isabela–Santa Cruz (2 hrs, ~$30-35). In Puerto Ayora, walk to the Charles Darwin Research Station (free-ish, $10 donation) to see the giant tortoise breeding programme, and eat at the fish market where pelicans and herons compete for scraps. Santa Cruz is the cheapest island for food and beds.
🚌Public speedboat Isabela–Santa Cruz ~£25-30
🛏Hostel/guesthouse Puerto Ayora (~£15-20pp)
- →Los Túneles snorkel tour (~£70)
- →Charles Darwin Research Station
- →Fish market + Playa Tortuga Bay walk (free)
North Seymour birdlife, then fly back to Quito
North Seymour / Baltra → Quito
Take a half-day North Seymour excursion from Puerto Ayora (~$100-130 USD incl. transfer to the Itabaca Channel and landing with guide) — the closest you'll get to frigatebirds displaying, blue-footed boobies and land iguanas all in one flat 1.5 km walk. If you're watching the budget, swap this for a free day at Tortuga Bay and a self-guided walk in the highlands to see giant tortoises in the wild ($10 shared taxi to El Chato reserve). In the afternoon take the airport bus from Puerto Ayora to Baltra ($5, plus 5-cent ferry crossing) and fly SCY or GPS back to Quito, arriving evening. Taxi to your hostel ~$25-30.
🚌Lunchtime/afternoon flight Baltra/SCY–UIO (return leg already counted Day 2); airport bus $5 + ferry $0.50
🛏Hostel private twin in Quito (~£12-16pp)
- →North Seymour guided landing (~£90)
- →Baltra airport bus transfer
- →Optional wild tortoise highlands visit
Quito — depart or add Cotopaxi
Quito
Depart at any time. If you have a spare day, book a shared Cotopaxi full-day tour (~$60-80) or take the Teleférico up the Pichincha slopes ($9) before flying out. Allow $200-250 USD of emergency cash and remember the $100 park fee and $20 transit card are already counted in this estimate — carry them in cash, cards are not accepted.
🚌Airport taxi ~£20-25
🛏None (departure day) or one more hostel night ~£14
- →Teleférico ($9)
- →Optional Cotopaxi day tour (~£50-65)

Frequently asked questions
How much does Self-Launched Galápagos: Southern & Central Islands by Land & Local Boat cost?+
Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £1,290 per person for 7 days in Galápagos Islands & Quito, Ecuador. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.
Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+
Yes — G Adventures charges around £2,350 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £1,290 — a saving of roughly £1,060 (45%) per person.
How long is the Galápagos Islands & Quito, Ecuador trip?+
This itinerary runs 7 days, covering 7 day-by-day stops through Galápagos Islands & Quito, Ecuador.
How do I join this trip?+
You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.
Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+
Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.
Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+
Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.
What kind of trip is this?+
This is a adventure, wildlife, backpacker trip through Galápagos Islands & Quito, Ecuador, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
