Galápagos Central, South & East Islands — Self-Launched Land-and-Hopper Version

10 days · Galápagos Islands & Quito

G Adventures charges £4,985

£3,750saved per person (75%)

No-markup version: ~£1,235 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

A self-launched take on G Adventures' 10-day Yolita yacht cruise. Instead of seven nights aboard a chartered motor yacht, you base yourself in Puerto Ayora (Santa Cruz) and Puerto Baquerizo Moreno (San Cristóbal) and use the public inter-island speedboats plus day tours with licensed Galápagos National Park naturalist guides to reach the same wildlife sites: North Seymour, Kicker Rock, Cerro Brujo, Isla Lobos, Gardner Bay and Punta Suárez (Española), Santa Fé, South Plaza, the Charles Darwin Research Station and Santa Cruz highlands, Devil's Crown and Post Office Bay (Floreana), Chinese Hat, Cerro Dragón and Black Turtle Cove. You will not have the same site-by-site access as a liveaboard — Galápagos park rules restrict land visitors on many remote sites — so this plan trades some exclusivity for roughly half the cost. All costs are approximate and in GBP; park fees are pay-cash.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive in Quito

Quito, Ecuador

Land at Mariscal Sucre Airport (UIO) and take an official taxi or the AeroSucre shared shuttle into the historic centre (about £4-8). Check into a hostel or budget guesthouse in the Centro Histórico or La Mariscal. Spend the afternoon acclimatising gently — Quito sits at 2,850m — and wander Plaza Grande, the Basilica and Calle La Ronda. Book your Galápagos flights today if you haven't (LATAM/Avianca via Guayaquil run roughly £180-260 return booked a month or two ahead).

🚌Airport taxi to city ~£6

🛏Hostel or budget guesthouse in Centro Histórico, twin-share (approx £15 pp)

  • →Plaza Grande and Centro Histórico orientation walk
  • →Calle La Ronda evening stroll
  • →Book Galápagos internal flights if not pre-booked
~£40
Day 2

Quito to San Cristóbal — North Seymour-style wildlife intro

Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, San Cristóbal

Early flight Quito–Guayaquil–San Cristóbal (SCY). At the airport pay the $200 Galápagos National Park entry fee and $20 Transit Control Card in cash (roughly £170 for both) — non-negotiable and not included in any tour price. Transfer to your guesthouse, then spend the afternoon on a half-day bay tour or walk to Playa Mann and the San Cristóbal Interpretation Centre. Playa Mann is a free alternative for close blue-footed booby and sea lion encounters; for a North Seymour-style frigatebird and booby colony, book the 'Bahía Tour' that visits Isla Lobos for the next day.

🚌Domestic flight UIO–SCY roughly £110 one-way incl. via Guayaquil; local taxi/pickup £2

🛏Guesthouse in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno, twin-share (approx £22 pp)

  • →Playa Mann sea lion beach
  • →San Cristóbal Interpretation Centre (£2)
  • →Book Isla Lobos boat tour with a local operator
~£320
Day 3

Kicker Rock, Cerro Brujo & Isla Lobos snorkel

San Cristóbal

Full-day local boat tour (small group, licensed naturalist guide, typically £80-110 with lunch and snorkel gear) covering Kicker Rock (León Dormido) — the vertical tuff walls that the yacht itinerary visits — plus Cerro Brujo's white-sand beach with sea lions and marine iguanas, and a snorkel stop at Isla Lobos with sea lion pups and frigatebirds nesting. Operators on the Malecón sell these daily; haggle slightly and check snorkel gear quality. Water is cool July-November — a shorty wetsuit (£8 hire) is worth it.

🚌Included in the boat tour

🛏Guesthouse in Puerto Baquerizo Moreno (approx £22 pp)

  • →Kicker Rock snorkel and cruise
  • →Cerro Brujo beach walk
  • →Isla Lobos snorkel with sea lions
  • →Optional dive at Kicker Rock for certified divers (~£120)
~£120
Day 4

Speedboat to Santa Cruz — highlands tortoises & Darwin Station

Puerto Ayora, Santa Cruz

Morning public ferry (speedboat) San Cristóbal to Santa Cruz, about 2 hours, ~£30-35 one-way. Check into a Puerto Ayora guesthouse, then hire a bike or take a colectivo taxi to the Santa Cruz highlands: El Chato or Rancho Primicias, where giant tortoises roam wild (£5 entry, plus £10-15 taxi or £8 bike hire). In the afternoon walk to the Charles Darwin Research Station and Fausto Llerena Breeding Center (free/donation) — the same stop as the yacht itinerary. Evening on Calle Charles Darwin for ceviche and fish.

🚌Inter-island speedboat ~£33

🛏Guesthouse in Puerto Ayora, twin-share (approx £22 pp)

  • →Santa Cruz highlands giant tortoise ranch (£5)
  • →Charles Darwin Research Station & breeding centre
  • →Bike hire on Santa Cruz (~£8)
~£75
Day 5

Santa Fé & South Plaza day tour

Santa Cruz

Book a day tour from Puerto Ayora combining Santa Fé (land iguana hotspots and a big sea lion colony) and South Plaza (the grey-rock island covered in the endemic Opuntia cactus and swallow-tailed gulls) — roughly £90-110 with guide, lunch and snorkel stop. This mirrors the yacht's Day 5. Availability is limited (park permit quotas), so book 2-3 days ahead via a Puerto Ayora agency or GetYourGuide/Klook.

🚌Boat included in tour

🛏Guesthouse in Puerto Ayora (approx £22 pp)

  • →Santa Fé land iguanas and snorkel
  • →South Plaza birdwatching hike
  • →Snorkel with tropical fish
~£115
Day 6

Bartolomé-style scenic day — Pinnacle Rock views

Santa Cruz

With North Seymour and Bartolomé both heavily permit-limited, use this day for a Bartolomé day tour from Puerto Ayora (~£100-130) — the classic Pinnacle Rock viewpoint with Galápagos penguins and snorkelling, a strong substitute for the central-island scenery the yacht covers. If Bartolomé has no slots, swap in a two-tank dive or snorkel trip to Gordon Rocks or Seymour Norte with a licensed dive shop (both often available even when landing permits aren't).

🚌Boat included in tour

🛏Guesthouse in Puerto Ayora (approx £22 pp)

  • →Bartolomé hike to Pinnacle Rock
  • →Galápagos penguin viewing
  • →Snorkelling at Bartolomé beach
~£130
Day 7

Floreana — Devil's Crown & Post Office Bay

Santa Cruz / Floreana

Take a long day tour from Puerto Ayora to Floreana (limited to a handful of operators; ~£120-150) with snorkelling at Devil's Crown (Corona del Diablo), the eroded crater reef with rays, small sharks and turtles, then a stop at Post Office Bay to drop a postcard in the barrel — the same tradition as the yacht itinerary. Note that Gardner Bay and Punta Suárez on Española are very tightly permitted for land visitors; if a Floreana tour isn't available, this becomes a second Santa Cruz day: Tortuga Bay beach walk (2.5km trail, free) plus a Las Grietas snorkel.

🚌Boat included in tour

🛏Guesthouse in Puerto Ayora (approx £22 pp)

  • →Devil's Crown snorkel
  • →Post Office Bay postcard barrel
  • →Alternative: Tortuga Bay hike and Las Grietas snorkel
~£145
Day 8

Chinese Hat / Cerro Dragón substitute day

Santa Cruz

Chinese Hat and Cerro Dragón are north-coast sites only reachable on liveaboard itineraries; do them as bookends with a north-Santa Cruz tour instead — a boat trip around Daphne Major and a walk on the Itabaca Channel or Playa El Garrapatero (sea turtle nesting beach, reachable by £15 taxi, free entry). Finish the day at the Fausto Llerena station again at sunset for tortoise feeding, and enjoy an evening of encebollado and beer by the harbour.

🚌Taxi to El Garrapatero ~£15

🛏Guesthouse in Puerto Ayora (approx £22 pp)

  • →Playa El Garrapatero beach and lagoon birdlife
  • →Daphne Major viewpoint boat trip (optional ~£60)
  • →Puerto Ayora fish market pelicans
~£45
Day 9

Black Turtle Cove mangroves, then back to Quito

Santa Cruz to Quito

Early morning kayak or panga trip into Black Turtle Cove's mangroves (Aguirre is a no-landing site, but licensed lagoon tours run from Puerto Ayora ~£50-70 and you'll see rays, turtles and juvenile sharks in the calm channels). Then a short transfer to Baltra airport (bus + ferry + bus, ~£4) for the flight back to Quito via Guayaquil. Check into your old guesthouse and have a final night out in La Mariscal.

🚌Baltra ferry and bus ~£4; domestic flight GYE–UIO ~£110

🛏Hostel or budget guesthouse in Quito (approx £17 pp)

  • →Black Turtle Cove mangrove tour
  • →Baltra transfer
  • →Evening in La Mariscal
~£185
Day 10

Quito — optional city tour and depart

Quito

Optional half-day Quito city tour and equator-line visit (bookable via GetYourGuide for around £40-55) if your flight allows, or simply browse the Mercado Central and buy a final coffee. Taxi to the airport (~£6) and fly home. Note the yacht version wraps up simply with departure too, so nothing is lost here.

🚌City taxi and airport transfer ~£8

🛏None (departure day)

  • →Optional Quito city tour & Mitad del Mundo
  • →Mercado Central food stop
~£60

Frequently asked questions

How much does Galápagos Central, South & East Islands — Self-Launched Land-and-Hopper Version cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £1,235 per person for 10 days in Galápagos Islands & Quito. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+

Yes — G Adventures charges around £4,985 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £1,235 — a saving of roughly £3,750 (75%) per person.

How long is the Galápagos Islands & Quito trip?+

This itinerary runs 10 days, covering 10 day-by-day stops through Galápagos Islands & Quito.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a wildlife, adventure, beaches trip through Galápagos Islands & Quito, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
