A self-launched version of Epos Travel & Tours' 10-day small-group Grand Classical Tour of Greece, rebuilt for independent travellers using Greece's excellent KTEL intercity buses, the suburban rail/Proastiakos, and the legendary Kalavryta cog railway. You'll hit the same headline sites — Ancient Corinth, Epidaurus, Mycenae, Nafplio, Mystras, Monemvasia, the Mani's Diros Caves and Cape Tainaron, Voidokilia, Ancient Olympia, Delphi, the Meteora monasteries and Vergina/Aigai — but book each entry ticket yourself, stay in guesthouses and budget hotels, and eat in the same village tavernas the group tour uses. Costs are approximate backpacker/budget-traveller rates (shared hostel or budget double room), excluding international flights. Self-guided audio tours from GetYourGuide/Clio Muse cover the sites the operator's guide would have explained.
Day-by-day
Athens → Nafplio via Corinth Canal, Ancient Corinth & Epidaurus
Athens / Nafplio
Catch the 08:00-09:00 KTEL Argolidas bus from Athens (Kifissou terminal) toward Nafplio and hop off at Corinth Canal for photos at the bungee-platform bridge, then take the local bus or a short taxi to Ancient Corinth (~£4-6). Self-tour the Temple of Apollo, the Fountain of Peirene and the archaeological museum; combine tickets here are ~€8. Continue to Nafplio by bus (~1h, ~£6) and, if you have a car-free afternoon, take the local bus to Epidaurus (Ligourio) for the Theatre and Asklepieion (€12 entry) — otherwise do Epidaurus as a morning trip tomorrow. Check into a guesthouse in Nafplio's old town (~£25-30). Dinner in Syntagma Square, where the operator's own lunch tavernas cluster.

Self-tour Mycenae and its museum (€12), then bus back and climb the 999 steps to Palamidi Castle (€8) for the Argolic Bay view. Afternoon: local bus toward Myloi/Lerna to swim at the Amymoni spring beach, then back for a wander through the old town and a drink at Bourtzi-view terrace. Wine tasting at a Nafplio old-town wine bar (~£15) replaces the winery stop — try Nemea Agiorgitiko by the glass.

Mani road: Gytheio, Diros Caves, Cape Tainaron, Vathia & Limeni
Areopoli / Mani
This is the one genuinely awkward leg without a group van — the Mani has sparse buses. Alternatively base in Areopoli and ask your guesthouse about local drivers. Night in Areopoli's stone-built guesthouse (~£28) and eat at a taverna on the main platia.

The Palace of Nestor at Chora (€6) is a short bus/taxi hop away. Afternoon KTEL bus Pylos→Olympia via Pyrgos (~2h, ~£8). Ancient Olympia combined ticket €12 covers the sanctuary, Temple of Zeus, the tunnel and the Olympic stadium start line — walk the stadium track and visit the flame-lighting altar. Olympia → Kalavryta cog railway → Vouraikos gorge → Delphi
Delphi / Arachova
Do the scenic rail leg the way the tour does, but on public trains: KTEL bus Olympia→Patras (~1h30, ~£8), Proastiakos/OSE train Patras→Diakofto (~45 min, ~£6), then the Odontotos rack railway Diakofto→Kalavryta through the Vouraikos gorge (~1h, €12-14 — check times, usually 2-3/day). Wander Zachlorou village, then continue by bus to Aigio and on to Delphi (KTEL Fokidas, ~2h, ~£10) or, if you're time-pressed, Patras→Delphi buses run a few times daily. Base yourself in Arachova or Delphi village (~£25-28). Note the Mega Spileon monastery and Foloi forest stops are basically car-only — skip them or add a taxi from Kalavryta if you're keen.

Grand Meteoron (€5) and Varlaam (€5) are the biggest; Holy Trinity and Roussanou are the postcard shots — dress code: shoulders and knees covered, women in skirts (loan skirts provided). Sunset from the Kastraki rocks is free and better than any tour viewpoint. Taverna dinner in Kastraki.

🛏Guesthouse in Kastraki, ~£23
- →Grand Meteoron & Varlaam monasteries (€5 each)

Vergina/Aigai, Dion & Thermopylae → Athens
Kalambaka → Vergina → Athens
Optional but doable: the operator finishes with Aigai's royal tombs (€12) and Dion (€8), but both need a car or a long train/bus day. Practical public-transport version: morning bus Kalambaka→Larissa (~1h30, ~£6), train or bus Larissa→Katerini/Leptokarya area, then bus/taxi to Dion (~£8) to see the Temple of Zeus sanctuary under Mount Olympus. Alternatively, skip Dion and ride the bus straight back to Athens (~4.5h, ~£18) with a coffee/souvenir stop at Kamena Vourla (Thermopylae's battlefield and hot springs are a quick £5 taxi detour from the highway stop if your driver stops there). Frequently asked questions
How much does Grand Classical Greece Self-Launched: Athens, the Peloponnese, Delphi & Meteora cost?+
Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £1,020 per person for 10 days in Greece (Athens, Peloponnese, Delphi, Meteora). This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.
Is this cheaper than booking with Epos Travel & Tours?+
Yes — Epos Travel & Tours charges around £3,360 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £1,020 — a saving of roughly £2,340 (70%) per person.
How long is the Greece (Athens, Peloponnese, Delphi, Meteora) trip?+
This itinerary runs 10 days, covering 10 day-by-day stops through Greece (Athens, Peloponnese, Delphi, Meteora).
How do I join this trip?+
You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.
Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+
Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.
Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+
Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.
What kind of trip is this?+
This is a culture, slow-travel, budget trip through Greece (Athens, Peloponnese, Delphi, Meteora), self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
