No-markup version: ~£1,210 per person

Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.

A self-launched version of Wingbuddy's 13-day "Greek Islands & the Meteora" loop: five days of classical mainland sites (Corinth Canal, Mycenae, Epidaurus, Olympia, Delphi, Meteora) followed by island-hopping on Paros and Santorini and a final night back in Athens. Where the tour uses a coach and guide, you'll use Greece's excellent intercity KTEL buses, the Athens suburban rail, and Blue Star / SeaJets ferries — all bookable yourself. Archaeological sites are entered on individual tickets or the combined Peloponnese/Delphi bundles, and you can add a small-group walking tour or audio guide via GetYourGuide for the sites where a guide really adds value (Delphi, the Acropolis). Costs are approximate backpacker-to-mid-budget estimates in GBP.

Day-by-day

Day 1

Arrive Athens — Acropolis at golden hour

Athens

Land at Athens Airport and take Metro Line 3 (change at Syntagma for Line 2) or the X95 express bus into the centre — about €9 / £8, roughly 45–60 minutes. Check into a hostel or budget hotel in Plaka, Monastiraki or Koukaki. Late afternoon, walk up to the Acropolis (timed entry ticket ~€20 / £17 in summer, book the slot online in advance at etickets.tickets.gov.gr); the Parthenon is best in the last two hours before closing. Evening in Plaka for souvlaki and a rooftop drink with an Acropolis view.

🚌Athens Metro Line 3 + Line 2 from airport (~£8)

🛏Hostel dorm or simple guesthouse, Plaka/Monastiraki/Koukaki (~£22)

  • →Acropolis & Parthenon (timed entry, self-booked)
  • →Plaka & Monastiraki wander
~£70
Day 2

Peloponnese day: Corinth Canal, Mycenae, Epidaurus, Nafplio

Nafplio / Olympia

The tour's coach day is hard to replicate exactly, so the cleanest self-launch is a small-group or shared day tour from Athens covering Corinth Canal, Ancient Mycenae and Epidaurus (GetYourGuide, ~£65–85 including entry) — or go DIY: KTEL bus Athens→Nafplio (~€15 / £13, 2.5 hrs), local bus to Mycenae and Epidaurus, and sleep in Nafplio. Either way you see the Lion Gate, Tomb of Agamemnon, the theatre at Epidaurus and the canal. Overnight in Nafplio's old town (great value guesthouses) or continue by bus to Olympia if you want to shorten the next day.

🚌Shared day tour pickup or KTEL bus Athens–Nafplio (~£13) + local buses (~£8)

🛏Nafplio guesthouse or hostel (~£28)

  • →Corinth Canal viewpoint
  • →Ancient Mycenae & Lion Gate
  • →Epidaurus theatre
  • →Nafplio old town
~£120
Day 3

Nafplio to Olympia — birthplace of the Games

Olympia

Bus Nafplio→Tripoli→Olympia with KTEL (roughly €20–25 / £18–22, 3.5–4 hrs, two changes). Drop bags and spend the afternoon at the Olympia archaeological site and museum: the Temple of Zeus remains, the Ancient Stadium (run the track — it's allowed!) and the excellent Archaeological Museum. Evening in the village of Archaia Olympia; the bus over the Rio–Antirrio bridge on the way north tomorrow is a highlight in itself.

🚌KTEL regional buses Nafplio–Olympia (~£20)

🛏Budget hotel or guesthouse in Archaia Olympia (~£30)

  • →Olympia archaeological site
  • →Temple of Zeus & Ancient Stadium
  • →Archaeological Museum of Olympia
~£85
Day 4

Olympia to Delphi via the Rio–Antirrio bridge

Delphi

Morning bus Olympia→Patras (~€8 / £7), then Patras→Itea/Amfissa→Delphi with KTEL Fokidas (~€14 / £12). Check in at a guesthouse in modern Delphi village with views over the olive-filled Pleistos valley. Afternoon at the Delphi site: the Sanctuary of Apollo, the Temple, the Treasury of the Athenians and the stadium high on the slope, then the Archaeological Museum (the Charioteer). A self-booked small-group Delphi tour or audio guide is worth the extra detail (~£30–45 if you take a guide).

🚌KTEL buses Olympia–Patras–Delphi (~£19)

🛏Guesthouse in Delphi village (~£32)

  • →Delphi archaeological site & Sanctuary of Apollo
  • →Delphi Archaeological Museum
  • →Optional guided Delphi tour
~£105
Day 5

Delphi to Meteora — monasteries in the sky

Kalambaka

Bus Delphi→Lamia→Trikala→Kalambaka (KTEL, roughly €25 / £22, 4–5 hrs) — or shortcut via Livadeia if connections suit. Arrive Kalambaka mid-afternoon and walk up toward Kastraki for the first clifftop views. Visit one or two monasteries before the 5–6pm closing (each charges ~€3; modest dress required — shoulders and knees covered). Sunset from the Agios Nikolaos area is spectacular.

🚌KTEL buses Delphi–Kalambaka (~£22)

🛏Guesthouse in Kalambaka or Kastraki (~£28)

  • →Meteora monasteries (entry ~€3 each)
  • →Kastraki viewpoint & sunset
~£85
Day 6

Meteora hike, then night bus to Athens

Kalambaka → Athens

Hike the old footpath from Kastraki up to Great Meteoron and Varlaam (free, 2–3 hrs, bring water), or take a local taxi up and walk down. Late afternoon bus Kalambaka→Athens (KTEL Trikala, ~€25 / £22, 4.5 hrs) — the coach route passes Thermopylae, so if you're on an earlier bus you can hop off at the Leonidas statue and continue. Back in Athens, crash near Monastiraki; you'll need an early start tomorrow.

🚌KTEL bus Kalambaka–Athens (~£22)

🛏Hostel or budget hotel near Monastiraki (~£22)

  • →Meteora hiking trail
  • →Great Meteoron & Varlaam monasteries
  • →Thermopylae statue (if timings allow)
~£75
Day 7

Ferry to Paros — Parikia

Paros

Take Metro or bus to Piraeus and catch a Blue Star ferry to Paros (~4 hrs, €35–45 / £30–39 in economy; fast SeaJets take ~2h45 for more money — book at ferryhopper.com or direct with Blue Star). Arrive Parikia, check into a guesthouse in the old town, and explore the whitewashed lanes and the Panagia Katapoliani (Ekatontapyliani) Byzantine church. Sunset at the Kastro and dinner on the waterfront.

🚌Piraeus–Paros ferry (~£35)

🛏Guesthouse in Parikia (~£30)

  • →Panagia Katapoliani church
  • →Parikia old town & Kastro
~£90
Day 8

Paros — Naoussa and the beaches

Paros

Local bus to Naoussa (~€2) for the fishing-harbour village and its Venetian fort, then buses to Kolymbithres or Santa Maria beach for the afternoon — soft sand, clear water, sunbeds ~€15 if you want them. Rent a scooter or ATV (~£20/day + €15 insurance) if you'd rather chase beaches like Chrissi Akti and Lefkes village in the hills. Dinner back in Parikia.

🚌Local KTEL Paros buses (~£5)

🛏Guesthouse in Parikia (~£30)

  • →Naoussa harbour
  • →Kolymbithres & Santa Maria beaches
  • →Optional scooter hire to Lefkes
~£65
Day 9

Paros to Santorini — caldera sunset

Santorini

Morning ferry Paros→Santorini (Blue Star ~2h15, €25–35 / £22–30; SeaJets faster). Arrive at Athinios port, local bus up to Fira (~€2.50). Stay in Fira or Karterados rather than Oia for value. Afternoon walk part of the caldera rim path toward Firostefani and Imerovigli, then find a west-facing spot for the famous sunset — no need to pay for an Oia balcony.

🚌Paros–Santorini ferry (~£28) + local bus (~£3)

🛏Budget hotel or guesthouse, Fira/Karterados (~£40)

  • →Fira caldera rim walk
  • →Sunset over the caldera

Day 10

Santorini — black-sand beaches and Akrotiri

Santorini

Bus to Perissa or Kamari for black-sand beaches, or to Vlychada for something quieter. Add the Bronze Age excavations at Akrotiri (~€12 / £10, covered-roof site) and, if you like, the Santo Wines terrace for a tasting with caldera views (~£15). Evening back in Fira — gyros and a cheap bar beat the €200 dinner-tables.

🛏Budget hotel or guesthouse, Fira/Karterados (~£40)

  • →Perissa/Kamari black-sand beaches
  • →Akrotiri archaeological site
  • →Optional Santo Wines tasting

Santorini — Oia and the north

Santorini

Early bus to Oia before the cruise crowds (arrive by 8:30am), walk the castle end of the village and the blue-domed churches, then hike the 10km caldera trail back to Fira (3–4 hrs, free and one of the best walks in Greece) or take the bus. 🛏Budget hotel or guesthouse, Fira/Karterados (~£40)

  • →Oia village & castle
  • →Fira–Oia caldera hike

Day 12

Fly or ferry back to Athens — Plaka & Monastiraki

Athens

Cheapest sensible option is a morning Blue Star or SeaJets ferry Santorini→Piraeus (5–7 hrs, €45–60 / £40–52) — or a 45-minute flight with Ryanair/Volotea/Aegean if you book ahead (~£45–80). Settle into a Monastiraki hostel, spend the afternoon in Plaka's lanes and the flea market, and finish with a rooftop drink facing the lit Acropolis.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Greek Islands & Meteora — Self-Launched cost?+

Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £1,210 per person for 13 days in Greece. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.

Is this cheaper than booking with Wingbuddy?+

Yes — Wingbuddy charges around £2,110 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £1,210 — a saving of roughly £900 (43%) per person.

How long is the Greece trip?+

This itinerary runs 13 days, covering 13 day-by-day stops through Greece.

How do I join this trip?+

You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.

Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+

Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.

Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+

Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.

What kind of trip is this?+

This is a culture, adventure, hiking trip through Greece, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
