Self-Launched Discover Greece: Athens, the Peloponnese & the Cyclades
12 days · Greece
G Adventures charges £3,250
No-markup version: ~£1,145 per person
Estimate only, not a guaranteed price. Always verify costs independently before booking.
A 12-day self-launched version of the G Adventures / National Geographic Journeys "Discover Greece" itinerary, travelling from Athens to Athens independently. You'll cover the same ground — the Acropolis and Ancient Agora, Delphi and its archaeological museum, Olympia, Náfplio with Mycenae, Epidaurus and Ancient Corinth, then ferry-hop to Náxos and Santorini before flying back to Athens for a mezze cooking class. Instead of a private coach and an expedition leader, you'll use Greece's excellent KTEL intercity buses, Blue Star and SeaJets ferries, and a cheap domestic flight, staying in guesthouses and hostels. All costs are approximate per person and exclude international flights.
Day-by-day
Arrive in Athens
Athens
Land at Athens airport (ATH) and take metro Line M3 straight to the city centre (around €9, ~45 mins) or the X95 airport bus (around €5.50). Check into a hostel or guesthouse in Monastiraki or Plaka — both are walkable to the ancient sights. Spend the evening wandering Plaka's lanes, grab a souvlaki dinner (€4-6) and pick up your combined Acropolis ticket the next morning. Buy a 5-day Athens public transport ticket (€8.20) if you'll be moving around a lot.
🚌Metro M3 from Athens Airport to Monastiraki (~€9)
🛏Hostel or guesthouse in Monastiraki/Plaka, private twin or dorm (approx £30-40pp)
- →Evening orientation walk through Plaka
- →Souvlaki dinner in Monastiraki
Acropolis, Ancient Agora & Shedia Home
Athens
Book an English-language Acropolis and Parthenon guided tour on GetYourGuide or with a licensed local guide (approx €45-60, includes entry if bundled — check; otherwise the combined ticket is €30). Go early, around 8am, to beat the heat and cruise crowds. Later, use the same ticket for the Ancient Agora and its excellent museum. In the afternoon, call into Shedia Home, the non-profit café run by the Greek street magazine Shedia — a coffee or drink there supports a genuinely good cause.

- →Guided Acropolis & Parthenon tour (GetYourGuide)
- →Ancient Agora self-guided visit

Free morning in Athens, afternoon to Delphi
Delphi
Spend the morning at the National Garden (free) or the Acropolis Museum (€15, book a slot online in summer). Around midday, take the KTEL bus from Athens' Liosion terminal to Delphi — roughly 3 hours, about €17-18 one way. Check into a guesthouse in the modern village of Delphi, which sits right beside the ruins, then walk the site in the late afternoon light when tour coaches have gone.
🚌KTEL bus Athens (Liosion) → Delphi, ~3 hrs, ~€18
🛏Family guesthouse in Delphi village (approx £30-40pp for a twin)
- →National Garden or Acropolis Museum visit
- →Evening wander around Delphi village
Delphi ruins & museum, then across the Gulf to Olympia
Olympia
Get to the Delphi archaeological site at opening (entry €12) and hire an audio guide or join a small group tour on site. The Temple of Apollo, the treasury of the Athenians and the theatre are all in one compact hillside. Follow with the Archaeological Museum of Delphi (included in the site ticket) — the bronze Charioteer alone is worth the trip. In the afternoon, take a KTEL bus via Patras (change at Rio/Patras, roughly 4-5 hours, ~€20-25) across the Rio-Antirrio bridge into the Peloponnese and on to Olympia. Check into a guesthouse in the village.

🛏Guesthouse in Ancient Olympia village (approx £30-40pp)
- →Delphi Archaeological Site
- →Delphi Archaeological Museum
- →Rio-Antirrio bridge crossing
Ancient Olympia, then Náfplio
Náfplio
Explore the Ancient Olympia site and museum in the morning (combined ticket €12) — the stadium tunnel and the workshop of Pheidias are highlights. Then take the KTEL bus to Náfplio (via Pyrgos and Tripoli; expect 3.5-4.5 hours and around €20 — often one change, so check timetables the day before at the local KTEL office). Náfplio is arguably the prettiest town in mainland Greece: settle into a guesthouse in the old town and spend the evening on the waterfront with a glass of local Nemea wine.
🚌KTEL bus Olympia → Pyrgos → Tripoli → Náfplio, ~4 hrs, ~€20
🛏Guesthouse in Náfplio old town (approx £35-45pp)
- →Ancient Olympia archaeological site & museum

Mycenae, Epidaurus & Akronafplia
Náfplio
Take the local KTEL Argos-bound bus to Mycenae (around 45 mins, €3-4) and explore the citadel and Lion Gate independently with the site ticket (€12) and the on-site museum. Afterwards, continue by bus toward Ligourio/Epidavros for the Theatre of Epidaurus (€12) — one of the best-preserved ancient theatres anywhere. Return to Náfplio in the late afternoon and climb the free path up to the Akronafplia fortress for sunset views over the Argolic Gulf, or swim off Arvanitia beach a 10-minute walk from town.
🚌Local KTEL buses to Mycenae and Epidaurus, ~€8-10 total

Ancient Corinth, then ferry to Náxos
Náxos
Leave Náfplio early and take the KTEL bus to Corinth (change in Argos or direct, 2-2.5 hrs, ~€12), then the local bus out to Ancient Corinth and its museum (€8). Continue to Athens' port at Piraeus by suburban rail or bus, and catch an afternoon or evening Blue Star ferry from Piraeus to Náxos — around 5.5 hours in economy class, roughly €40-55. Book the ferry online in advance in summer. Arrive on Náxos late and settle into a guesthouse in or just outside the old town.
🚌KTEL bus Náfplio → Corinth → Piraeus; Blue Star ferry Piraeus → Náxos (~5.5 hrs, ~€48)

Náxos old town, Portara & beaches
Náxos
A free day on Náxos. Walk the Portara, the giant unfinished temple gate of Apollo on the islet beside the port — free and best at sunset. Wander the Venetian-influenced old town below the Kastro, visit the Archaeological Museum (€4), and take a local bus to Agios Prokopios or Plaka beach (€2-3) for a swim. Optional: a half-day trip to the hilltop village of Apiranthos or a Naxian cheese and kitron liqueur tasting. Eat at a taverna in the old market — Naxian potatoes and graviera cheese are local specialities.
🚌Local KTEL buses to beaches, ~€3-5 return

Ferry to Santorini & Oía sunset
Santorini
Catch the morning SeaJets or Blue Star ferry from Náxos to Santorini (roughly 1-2 hours, €25-40 depending on the fast/slow option). From Athinios port, take the local KTEL bus up to Fira (€2.50). Book budget accommodation in Fira, Karterados or Perissa rather than Oía — Oía is eye-wateringly expensive. In the afternoon take the bus to Oía (€2) and walk out to the castle ruins for the sunset, arriving early to get a spot; or walk the 10km caldera-edge path from Fira to Oía for free.
🚌SeaJets/Blue Star ferry Náxos → Santorini (~€30); local KTEL bus to Fira and Oía (~€5)
🛏Budget studio or guesthouse in Fira/Karterados (approx £45-60pp in high season)

Volcano and hot springs boat trip
Santorini
Join a caldera boat excursion to Nea Kameni to walk the volcanic crater and swim at the hot springs — bookable on GetYourGuide or Klook from about €25-35 for a basic half-day trip (sunset versions with dinner cost more). Back on land, visit the Museum of Prehistoric Thera in Fira (€10) to see the Akrotiri frescoes, or take the bus to the Akrotiri excavations (€20). Spend the evening at a Perissa or Kamari black-sand beach taverna.

Fly to Athens & mezze cooking class
Athens
Take a short domestic flight from Santorini (JTR) to Athens (ATH) with Ryanair, Volotea or Aegean — typically €40-80 if booked a few weeks out, 45 minutes. Drop your bags at an Athens hostel and join a small-group Greek cooking class in the afternoon (GetYourGuide/Klook, about €50-70), where you'll make a spread of mezze — tzatziki, fava, dolmades, keftedes — and finish with a glass of ouzo. Book in advance in high season.

Frequently asked questions
How much does Self-Launched Discover Greece: Athens, the Peloponnese & the Cyclades cost?+
Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £1,145 per person for 12 days in Greece. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.
Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+
Yes — G Adventures charges around £3,250 per person for a similar tour. Doing the same route independently, using the same standard of accommodation and activities, costs an estimated £1,145 — a saving of roughly £2,105 (65%) per person.
How long is the Greece trip?+
This itinerary runs 12 days, covering 12 day-by-day stops through Greece.
How do I join this trip?+
You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.
Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+
Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.
Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+
Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.
What kind of trip is this?+
This is a culture, adventure, beaches trip through Greece, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
