Day-by-day
Hanoi highlights under your own steam
Hanoi (Ba Dinh, West Lake, Old Quarter)
Start at 8:00am to beat both the heat and the tour coaches. Walk or take a Grab bike from your Old Quarter hostel to the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum complex (Ba Dinh Square) — entry is free and it opens Tue–Thu and Sat–Sun, 7:30–10:30am (closed Mondays and Fridays, and usually closed Nov–early Dec for maintenance, so check dates). Long trousers/skirt covering the knees and covered shoulders are required. Carry on foot through the complex to the wooden stilt house and carp pond, then the One Pillar Pagoda — all within the same walled site, about 1.5–2 hours total. Continue on foot or by a 10-minute Grab bike (~£1) to Tran Quoc Pagoda on West Lake, the city's oldest Buddhist temple on its little peninsula. For lunch, skip a set-menu restaurant and eat where locals do: a bowl of bun cha or pho bo for around £2–3, plus an iced coffee (ca phe trung or a coconut coffee) for ~£1. In the afternoon pick your branch: on Mon/Wed/Fri take local bus 47 or a Grab (~£2, 25 min) east to Bat Trang ceramic village and try the pottery wheel; on Tue/Thu/Sat/Sun stay central and visit the Museum of Ethnology (~£2 entry, 90 minutes) for the outstanding outdoor stilt-house and water-puppet exhibits. Then head back south to the Temple of Literature / Quoc Tu Giam (~£1 entry), Vietnam's first university — allow an hour to wander the courtyards. Finish in the late afternoon at Hoan Kiem Lake: cross the red Huc Bridge to Ngoc Son Temple (~£1), watch the locals doing tai chi, then lose yourself in the Old Quarter's alleyway shops and 36-street guilds. Optional evening add-on: a water puppet show at Thang Long Theatre (~£3.50) or a bia hoi corner beer for under £1. You'll be back at your hostel by around 5–6pm — or later, if the Old Quarter gets its hooks in.
🚌Grab motorbike taxis (~£0.80–1.50 per hop) and Hanoi public buses (~£0.25–0.35 per ride); entire day walkable/bikeable — no coach needed

Frequently asked questions
How much does Self-Launched Hanoi City Highlights (Full Day) cost?+
Doing it yourself with this self-launched itinerary costs an estimated £35 per person for 1 days in Hanoi, Vietnam. This is an AI-generated estimate based on typical budget-traveller prices — actual costs will vary by season and how you book.
Is this cheaper than booking with G Adventures?+

How long is the Hanoi, Vietnam trip?+
This itinerary runs 1 days, covering 1 day-by-day stops through Hanoi, Vietnam.
How do I join this trip?+
You can join an existing open departure using this itinerary if one is scheduled, or launch your own departure with your own dates and invite other travellers to join you — no tour operator required.
Isn't it easier to just use a tour operator?+
Well, yes, a tour operator will book all the individual parts of your travel for you and provide a guide. That's obvious, but doing this has the potential to save the group thousands, which can in turn improve your itinerary substantially or save you huge amounts of money. Also, when you launch a departure, Travel Crew has tools in place to help you book the individual sections of the trip or make it easier for you to do this as a group. Really, you do not need a middle man. If you are more comfortable paying more and using a middle man, then you should certainly do this.
Is it safer to book through a tour operator?+
Arguably, there isn't much difference. A self-launched trip runs on the same principle as a group travel crew: collective responsibility, everyone looking out for each other, the same way it would if a group of friends organised the trip themselves — because that's exactly what's happening. You should always take out travel insurance before you go, self-launched or not; that doesn't change either way. Every open departure is published publicly with real dates and a real trip organiser, so it's never an anonymous arrangement, and our support team is reachable any time you need help, including in an emergency while you're away. Longer-term, we're building direct relationships with ground DMCs in popular destinations, offered as an optional paid add-on for extra on-the-ground support. Ultimately, though, the group is responsible for its own conduct and safety on a self-launched trip, same as on any trip you plan yourself.
What kind of trip is this?+
This is a culture, city-breaks, foodie trip through Hanoi, Vietnam, self-launched rather than run by a tour operator — you organise it with a group you find or bring yourself.
